Does your BIOS boot from the old drive when you put it in?
disable the old drive in the BIOS if that is the case.
(linux will find it anyway)

Subject: IDE problems with Dell PowerEdge 1400
Date: 19 Dec 2000 10:37:52 GMT
Hello,
I've recently purchased a Dell PowerEdge 1400 system and am in the
process of bringing up RH7.0 on it. It is mostly SCSI based with an
Adaptec controller, but the CDROM uses an IDE interface. I would like
to do two things:
1. Add a Tecmar Travan NS20 ATAPI tape drive.
2. Add more IDE hard drives with a Siig controller Dell comped me.
My questions are:
1. I want to keep the CDROM and the tape drive on the same IDE
controller, right? That is, I don't want a tape drive and a hard drive
sharing the same controller.
2. When I do an "insmod ide-tape", I get the following error:
Using /lib/modules/2.2.16-22smp/block/ide-tape.o

hda: CRD-8482B, ATAPI CDROM drive

So, is this a hardware problem? Is this a driver issue?
3. The Siig card is a "PCI Bus Dual Channel Ultra ATA Controller",
Model CN2449. It says it "conforms to PCI v2.1 Plug-and-play" Scary!
Anyway, when I install it, I can no longer use the built-in controller
(I get "hda: lost interrupt"). What do I need to do to get this
going? Do I need to put proper probing information into the
conf.modules file?
Thanks for any help.

Correct.
To be more precise, your problem is a setup problem with your ISDN
modem; you do not give it its MSN number, which is a must.
IIRC, it is AT&E<your_MSN> .

Chris,
in response to nearly the same query earlier in the week
The way I did it (with NT4 service pack 5 but Windows 2000 uses the same
files) was to use the NTloader program.
If you load linux second and allow the LinuxLoader (lilo) to reside on the
partition that contains the MBR (master boot record) you will overwrite
NTLDR. This is a file NT needs to boot up. *You have not done this because
you can still boot windows
Otherwise assuming you loaded lilo to your linux partition your machine will
boot to the normal NT boot options. To be able boot linux as one of the
options you need to edit the boot.ini file located in your Windows partition
to point the way, as it were, to your linux OS.
Boot into linux with a boot disk created for the purpose.
In a terminal or console log in as root.
type in :
dd if=/dev/hdax of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
including spaces
Where hdax is your linux partition (from what you wrote about your
partitioning it will probably be hda3. This command will copy your boot
sector information from off you linux partition to a file located in the /
directory and name that file bootsect.lnx. Copy this file to a DOS
formatted floppy with
mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt
copy /bootsect.lnx /mnt
umount /mnt
Reboot your machine into Windows 2000 and copy the file bootsect.lnx from
the floppy to your C:\> root directory in Windows. Then find and edit
boot.ini in Windows 2000 usually also located in the root directory. This is
roughly how the file looks before editing:
[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation Version
4.00"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation Version
4.00 [VGA mode]" /basevideo /sos
Your version will probably refer to Windows 2000 not NT 4. Add the
following line
c:\bootsect.lnx="Linux "
Save the file. When you reboot your machine, in addition to your normal
Windows 2000 boot options you will also have an option of Linux.
Hope this helps and good luck with linux.
Regards Tad

It's not Redhat, but the Mandrake site has some nice documentation
that should take you through these initial stages: Go to
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/
and hit the Documentation button. You can read the reference manual
and user guide online. For specific queries I'd recommend the Linux
Documentation project:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/
Have a look at the HOWTOs, and perhaps you should look at the LINUX
FAQ
http://www.linuxdoc.org/FAQ/Linux-FAQ/index.html
There's no doubt that all the Windows experience in the world doesn't
help you with LINUX (and I still think it's a bugger to install and
setup), but the good think about the LINUX community is that there's a
lot of help out there.
Good luck!
Steve

If you wont get help here i recommend to ask the
question to the Suse-support (if possible) .
I have made good experience with the support
(solved all the issues i have asked so far) .
You maybe want to write the post in english ,
here is the translation of the essintial (le mail en anglais):
- I have installed Suse 7.0 recently , it seems
the memory is not detected in the correct way ,
because i have 128 MB available , but Suse
detects only 16 MB .
What can i do to change this ? -
Execuse moi de ne ecrit pas en francais ,

I'm having problems installing my Creative GeForce2 MX under RedHat Linux 7,
the drivers that came with linux don't recognize my GeForce2 MX, then i
installed the NVIDIA 0.9-5 drivers, and when i installed them it gave a
problem with agpgart module, it wont install that module because it couldn't
find a supportable VIA chipset, then i tried the agp_try_unsupported=1 and
it installed the agpgart module, and then i was able to install the nvidia
drivers, but when i start X-WINDOWS it crahes the computer.
My configuration: Intel Pentium III (EB) 667 Mhz, ASUS CUV4X Motherboard
(VIA chipset), 128 MB RAM (133 Mhz), RedHat Linux 7.0, XFree86 4.0.1.
