Thanks Jim, but in this case the results are the same:

> rpm -Fvh arts-2.1.2-1.i386.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
    arts = 2.1.1 is needed by kdelibs-sound-2.1.1-5

So to upgrade this package, should I uninstall (rpm -e) arts-2.1.1 , then
install (rpm -U) arts-2.1.2? Is that the general process for upgrading any
package? Or will that have bad effects on the dependent packages? (in this
example, kdelibs-sound)

Thanks.

An interesting note, under 2.4.1, 2.4.2, 2.4.3, and 2.4.4 my 2940 and 29160
cards worked just fine with the new aic7xxx driver, whatever version was in
those kernel releases. I never experienced any troubles. His problem may
also be a firmware bug on the 29160. I know Adaptec has made a couple
releases of the firmware for the 29160, so that might also be an option to
investigate.

Ask here, get answer here so that all may benefit.

I'm going to snip the log, but essentially it reports very close to the
same thing I just got with a "Rage Fury Pro 32mb" + VIVO card.

The difference is that my failure log reported from scanpci the the card
number was 5446, not 544d as yours does. Run scanpci -v by hand for a
full report.

I'm convinced in my case that ATI has made a new card, but has neglected
to tell the box artwork people. Even Xig's drivers for *that* card
could not find that card. Given the time lag between a new card coming
onto the scene, and working drivers for linux typically being a year, I
took the card back for a refund. Xig said they would have to go buy one
and write new drivers for it.

Based on the fact that ATI *may* be using a sequential numbering system,
and my 5446 wasn't recognized, your 544d (assumeing a hex numbering system)
is in the same category. Take it back for a refund and get if you can,
some older but fast enough model. I am continueing that search for
myself, but the only thing I can find locally is the nvidia card at $230
USD on the Circuit City shelf. I don't game, and don't need that much
card, just one that can change a screen in the sub-second category
instead of 2-3 seconds like this old SiS-6326 based card manages.

And one more time ATI sticks it to us, at least in my opinion. In my
case, I have no idea if the drivers on the floppies it came with
actually worked, there are no M$ windows in this house...

This is the real error, the drivers (r128) never found _that_ card.

Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 03:50:01 GMT

rpm -Fvh arts-2.1.2-1.i386.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
arts = 2.1.1 is needed by kdelibs-sound-2.1.1-5

means that you NEED arts version 2.1.1 to install kdelibs-sound-2.1.1-5.

I upgraded a machine from Redhat 7.0 to 7.1. well when I say upgraded, I got
the install CD, moved the RPMS to a directory, and moved the kernel ones out
of the way. then I got the directory listing and created a script that was
in the form

rpm -Fvh filename1.i386.rpm
rpm -Fvh filename2.i386.rpm
rpm -Fvh filename3.i386.rpm
rpm -Fvh filename4.i386.rpm

for every filename, NOT rpm -Fvh *.

running this script a few times, I succeeded to upgrade all the packages
after the first few passes. I used that method coz I don't trust the install
CD well enough to upgrade it, and would rather do it package by package that
way in one swoop with a script as described above. Some packages do require
the kernel, but if you're like me, you're rather dubious of the RPM way of
kernels, so all I can say is be sure you're doing the right thing AND have a
boot disk handy!

happy to answer more questions,

Matt

Try running xfs. I just blew away a RedHat-7.1 install and replaced it
with Mandrake-8.0 because RH's XFree86 and XF86_Mach64 would both crash
when running KDE without having xfs running in the background.

And xfs on both systems produces fonts which are all but unreadable on a
17" 1280x1024 display running 106dpi. Without xfs, the fonts are OK.
