You are right of course on the subject matter but allow me to push it
towards a bigger point - I *knew* i was heading for trouble when i aimed to
install both systems together and still after major scrutiny i could not get
one coherent document to guide me through the process. no (mini) HOWTO,

the painful facts (from the bios down to the fact that there are more than one
type of ext'd partitions) were learned the hard way.
inevitably, some fables also stuck along without (e.g. the 4GB win thing).

I'm setting up LPRng and have made some progress, but I'm obviously doing
something wrong. when I try to print (lpr filename) I get
cannot open '/dev/lp0' - 'Permission denied'
from lpq
I have
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 6, 0 Sep 27 11:31 /dev/lp0
should it be something else?

Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2000 01:12:38 GMT
For three straight linux installs (RedHat 6.1, 6.2, mandrake 7.1) I had no
problem with LILO loading linux. I have BootMagic in the MBR dual booting
Windows and linux. Now with Mandrake 7.2 something awful is happening to a
lot of people not being able to load linux with neither grub nor lilo. I
tried 7.2 installes in every conceivable mode (rec.,customize, expert) and
the result is always the same: the lilo (or grub) dialog pops up prompting
for an O.S. to load and when I select and <Enter> nothing happens. This
behavior is different from previous versions. previously I selected linux in
BootMagic and linus loaded, lilo having been in the first boot sector of
linux partition. Now I dialog is again asking what to load instead of
loading the blasted thing. Something is obviously different, changed and
that difference was not communicated to people who designed the
configuration and for sure not the users.
I'm asking someone with deeper knowledge to hop over to
alt.os.linux.mandrake and help us to sort out this mess with LM 7.2 that
many of us have with LILO/GRUB.
Thanks,
Peter

Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 14:59:00 -0800
Hello:
I would like to setup a few RH6.2 boxes to save any crash information. In
Solaris one can enable crash dumps (to /var/crash) and/or use the savecore
command to dump it to a file. After which you can anaylze the dumps with
adb/kdb and other tools to determine the system's instructions leading up to the
crash.
I cannot seem to find any similar command or configuration in linux. I have
searched and read many documents, but have not found an answer. The closest I
have come was to find a crash dump analysis kit at:
http:://www.missioncriticallinux.com/technology/crash/
This requires recompiling the kernel with a core dump patch.
I am looking for a way to generate crash dumps without patching and recompiling
the kernel.. If anyone knows how to do this, could you please post/email me
instructions or point me to some documentation describing the procedure.
Thanks in advance,

I'd always used PQ Boot Magic with LILO in the first boot sector of the
Linux partition.
But it don't work so good with Mandrake 7.2. So I've just resigned to
using Mandrake's boot loader installed in my MBR of the first disk. Not
as pretty as PQ, but it does a good job for me and picks up all the
other bootable OS that I have.
The depth of the thing is beyond my feeble knowledge, but I do know that
when I look at a partition that Mandrake sets up with Linux fdisk, the
identity of the partition is (85) it think, and different from an
ordinary ext2 partition set up with RH, Deb. or COL.

I found the easiest thing to do to get KDE2 going, is when you install RH
7.0 select Gnome as your desktop environment. Then open up the File Manager
and double click the KDE2 rpms. Do not force anything! The first thing you
should do is install htdig, then install QT. Then install the KDE2 files.
When there are no dependencies you are installing it in the correct order.
It should also let you know what files are dependent upon each other and you
can work your way up the ladder. OR you could read the correct order to
install the files on http://www.kde.org.

Change it to boot on the console instead and check the log when you do startx to get

the GUI. This seems like an X problem setup and not a Linux problem.
If you want to get a distribution that works you may want to try SuSE 7.0 professional.

With mpg123 (console based) you should be able to use a 100MHz 486. With
downsampling even 66MHz. But I never confirmed that myself.
With xmms (graphical), the requirements are probably a little more...

Is lpd running? It must be running first - and you need networking up (you
need the 'lo' pseudo-device for the local loopback interface).

Try installing SuSE then use YaST to set Lilo up in the MBR.Very easy and I
actually advise that.
You can also load SuSE up through Windows Menu system and. Read that section
in the SuSE installation book. Can't remember offhand, but instructions are
fairly straightforward.
Partitioning is a personal preference and since I have two harddrives, 1 for
Win and 1 for Linux, I use lilo in the MBR and decide at boottime which to
load, although I use Windows for only one thing--DvD.
Hope this helps.Sky

Hi Ivan-
I would consider trying Storm Linux (www.stormix.com) if you want a debian
install with nice configuration tools, etc. OTOH, I use plain old debian
potato here with some unstable stuff thrown in and I like it. KDE2 is
available by simply apt-getting a task metapackage for kde I believe. I
don't use gnome or kde anymore. Check out the debian packages lists off off

If I remember arightly, there are some advanced configuration items for the

global configuration options or the configuration options for the panel you
are using. I have not used gnome in some time but I did mess with helixcode
