I do not think you are ready for a UNIX-type system. Questions like
these indicate that you will be having a lot of problems on the way,
and basically be a burden in groups like these. And when things
finally are not working out, you will probably be writing an editorial
on ZDNet proclaiming the unusability of "Linux". Sans your profanity,
of course.
But if you insist, to answer your questions:
- If Windows has taken over your entire harddisk (and it does by
default), you will have to erase or shrink that partition before
installing Linux.
- Erasing the partition means that everything on it will be gone.
That includes Windows itself, and all your personal data.
So yes, before doing this, you need to backup your files.
- Shrinking the size of the partition is only possible by using
third-party applications, such as PartitionMagic.
- An alternative would be to add a second harddrive in your machine.
- LILO is the "LInux LOader", the program you will use to start
Linux. It can also be used to select other operating systems
to boot, so you could make it your "boot menu". It can either
reside in the beginning ("superblock") of the Linux partition, or
in the Master Boot Record (MBR) of your harddisk.
If you are trying to use Linux to be into "alternative" platforms, you
might want to consider an iMac with MacOS X. (That's UNIX too).
And you might want to recosider that "IAmGod" part of your name.

Thanks guys for your replies.
I worked around the problem by setting QTDIR in bashrc. But I have read the
manpages, looked in all the files mentioned, "grep"ed whole directories and
can't find what was originally setting the env variable. So my original
question still stands. Is there any method that can show me what file,
script etc. is setting an env. variable?
I mean a search routine, a logfile whatever?

Subject: Printing crash (cups)

I successfully configured printing from Mandrake 7.2 (cups) to a
parallel-port Epson laser printer, but when I tried to add a samba
printer, all printing failed.
The cups error log reports:
[19/Dec/2000:02:42:43 +0000] Started filter

[19/Dec/2000:02:42:58 +0000] Saving printers.conf...
I've tried deleting the printers and reinstalling cups completely, but
it still fails to print. Files appear in the queue (checked with
QT-CUPS), but fail to print.
Any advice gratefully received...

I've just installed an Apple Base Station and it seems to be working as
advertised - i.e. providing internet access to three macs via a hub.
It's configured to use DHCP and NAT, and as an Airport- Ethernet bridge.
My questions are: how should I configure my Linux box so that:
a) it can use the base station for internet access?
b) I can telnet into my Linux box from a Mac and use VNC and MI/X?
Before I set up the Base Station I configured all the computers with a
host file and a unique address in the 192.168.1.xx range, and telnet
worked fine.
Should I remove the linux hosts file altogether or reconfigure it in
some way?
TIA,

Hi Paul!
You need help with RedHat? This wonder supposedly solves problems before
they exist.
OK, RedHat is not my strong point but I heard that they ship with
kernels compiled for pentium CPU's, this maybe why it cannot accept a
lowly 486.
I installed Slak 7.1 (my latest) on 486/40 with 8M RAM and 256M HD.
No hickups, the kernels are 386 ready, when you have time you recompile
for higher numbers.
Enjoy Linux.

Subject: Kernel compilation
Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2000 12:59:10 GMT
Hi,
I got a mandrake 7.0 v2 installed (kernel 2.2.14) and I uprgade to
kernel 2.4. There were no problems during make bzImage nor during make
modules.
as to make modules_install, i had to upgrade to a new modutils.rpm
version, because of an error saying : depmod -F : bad argument. When
upgraded, no more errors appeared , but I had a big surprise after
rebooting:
modules didn't work anymore. During boot , I got an very long list
saying for each module:
xxxxx.O: can't locate module xxxxxx
I tried a depmod -av as root, and i got the same list.
some shells commands (as top) also said : /boot/System.map has an
incorrect version
I also noticed something strange, but I'm sure it has something to do
with my problem:
here 's the begining of /var/log/message after reboot:
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] syslogd 1.3-3: restart.
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] syslog: syslogd startup succeeded
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] kernel: klogd 1.3-3, log source = /proc/kmsg
started.
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] syslog: klogd startup succeeded
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] kernel: Inspecting /boot/System.map
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] kernel: Symbol table has incorrect version number.
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] kernel: Cannot find map file.
Dec 20 13:25:42 [...] kernel: No module symbols loaded.
A new directory called 2.4.0-test10 has been created in /lib/module, but
it's empty... although I chose to build some stuff as modules (in make
menuconfig) . Well, I forgot one thing: i used make menuconfig instead
of make xconfig coz xconfig reported some errors (Let's say it because
kernel2.4.0 is a beta release) .
So here 's my questions:
What's that file System.map, what is it used for ?
How does the kernel know that is has to look for modules in that or that
directory ?
Lastly, what is there to do after make modules_install in order to make
them work properly after reboot ?
ThanX for your help

ncurses should install by default into the /usr/include directory where
the lxdialog makefile expects to find it.
(you may have curses, which is not the same thing - slackware has

Hello,
I want to install a Ghostscript printer driver for my HP Deskjet 697C
and have found the definitions for this here:
http://www.erdw.ethz.ch/~bonk/hp850/hp850.html
The only problem at the moment is that to install this, the README says
to:
to compile with gs5.x, simply add
DEVICE_DEVS4=cdj850.dev cdj670.dev cdj890.dev cdj1600.dev
to your makefile.
Unfortunately, I pulled down a RPM for Ghostscript and so I can't insert
that line into the makefile.
Any suggestions on how to insert this functionality using an RPM? I've
contacted the author & he is interested in posting it to the site if
there is an answer out there.

I once had problems even trying to boot from a linux floppy on a

and ended in a kernel dump. Everything went fine after I disabled all
the BIOS caching settings. Maybe you could give that a try ?

Well, I just dumped RH6.2 in favor of Debian and installed KDE2 on it, no
problems (d/l'ed and compiled the source, I didn't realize there was a
Debian binary..oh well).
Package management? I like Debians apt-get and dselect better than RPM.,
much better actually...although I'm not crazy about the dselect interface.
As a plus, once you get KDE2 installed, kpackage seems to handle debian
packages and interface with apt-get quite nicely.

My understanding is that xntpd never makes big adjustments and that
is partly the reason for ntpdate in many of the init scripts. The
utility ntpdate will not make `jumps' if the clock is `close' enough
but will will if the jomp is `big enough' to take a `long time'. On
my system long time=0.5 second. ntpdate -b is suppose to never take
big jumps. (This is from a man page on Solaris.)
