The Big Linux companies are under a lot of pressure at the moment to get
their product out and become a viable money-making machine. Part of
that is having all the modern aspects of the linux kernel, which means
that they need 2.4.x over 2.2.x.... the kernel came out a bit later than
planned, the big bugs didn't get worked out quite in time.... The powers
that be made a decision and went with it. They hoped that their patches
were enough, but there were still a couple big bugs.
They shoudl have gone with a patched version of 2.4.1 IMHO, but C'est la
vie.... if you're pretty savvy it's no real broblem.... if nothing else
you coudl boot off a rescue disk, compile a new kernel on another
machine, and move it over. It will fit on a floppy, afterall....
<smile>
Not to totally single out redhat in that aspect, Mandrake did the same
thing. And Though I don't use SuSE, I'd assume that they're in the same
boat. Compiling a kernel to fit a machine is an art, compiling one to
fit every machine is simply a pain in the ass.

if you don't want to use DNS then you're going to have to send mail to
the ip address. Without DNS it doesn't know where hsonline.net is.

I just upgraded me y kernel so I'm runing Redhat 7.1, 2.4.4-XFS. I had no
problem using my USB mouse ns Wacom tablet when I was running 2.4.2-XFS
kernel. During the boot-up phase it sees both of my USB devices including my
Setiek Flying stick. But they are not usuable. I notice one diffrerence with
the 2.4.2-XFS kernel during boot-up it Mounted the USB filesystem. But my
new Kernel Settings it don't. Where do I enable USB filesystem mounting or
how do I set the USB devices to work.

Or you coudl do it the easy way and just get the most recent kernel and
compile yourself one that is built specifically for your machine. With
all your filesystems. Take a look at tux2 before you commit to reiser.

This is true, linux is about sculpting the OS to fit your needs, not the
other way around. For example, I need a huge /var on my home machine
for pr0n, but I only need to mirror a couple webpages on my machine at

that's the way it's supposed to work, linux is actually doing a very
good job of managing that memory.
Linux will go ahead and load all necessary libraries into memory, but
won't free up the memory until it's needed.... this way you can run
netscape, close it, and if you run it again the kernel doesn't have to
load netscape off the disk, because it's already sitting in memory. If
you load galeon and your memory is all filled up, the kernel will look
at that loaded, but unused memory and find something to free up and
overwrite. If you haven't used netscape in awhile it'll overwrite that
chunk of RAM.
Basically your kernel is just doing it's damndest to be ready for
anything you might do, you're not leaking memory. <smile> If you want
to play with it send me an email and I'll send you a little program that
will fill up your memory and then free it.... it's really simple, but
it'll push everythign currently loaded in ram into swap, trhen you can
see that your memory size only grows when you access something....

I ran xcdroast in "debug" mode, and the only problems I saw were
initially there was a message about ownership and permission for xcdrgtk
which I corrected exactly per the suggested method.
The only other problem I ran across were a couple errors for file access:
couldnt' open: /root/.xcdroast/isoopt.cfg
couldn't open: /root/.xcdroast/isoheader.cfg
I checked and these files were non-existent. (I checked with view hidden
files turned on) After a thorough search of the hard drive, with no luck
in finding them. I manually created each of the files with no contents.
Afterward, xcdroast would run without the same errors, but after a cdwrite
command I still had no data written onto the cd???
I tried to write an .img file to the cd directly using the command:
cdrecord -v speed=4 dev=0,.0 filename.img
and it looked just fine as far as no error messages etc.....but still
nothing on the cd..
what should be the contents of isoopt.cfg and isoheader.cfg ? How/ where
do I create these files if they are the problem?
tnx

It will probably be the same package as what Windoze uses since it's under
the BSD license. Should be on your install CD's under the name starting
with ucd. They have no problems using other people's code as long as it
isn't under the GPL.

Worked fine on AMD K6-2/450, except for being unable to mount a cdrom.
Maybe your download got corrupted. IIRC, they have md5sums available.
Check the integrity of your download before burning a coaster.
Use good, stable hardware and you don't need a journaling filesystem. Also
build your kernel to use the SysRq key to get you out of a hang without
using the RESET switch.

Don,
Its unfortunate that you had so many problems
with Linux.
I have never really had that much trouble with it
and when I did people helped me out. I think if
you ask the right questions in the righ places
you would get help (something that you wouldnt get
from MS ;-)
I suppose this is easy for me to say as I have been
tinkering around with Linux for a few years altho I
am no expert.
I have also installed and used successfully :-
BeOS
QNX
FreeBSD
and to a lesser degree Plan 9.
I have found that Millenium does some wierd stuff
and freezes on occasion so I think its better to stick
to 98SE for now. Linux has been wierd on me as well
from time to time but nothing I didnt get sorted.
On some of your other points :-
External Serial Modems are the best way to go (IMHO)
The Graphics Part of Star Office is ok and better than Corel.
Try Suse Linux 7.1 . . I think more stable and reliable than
Mandrake (which is a bit fussy again IMHO !

BTW, your PATH is meaningless in this regard. You do not include header

What I would recommend is re-booting the system and at the first graphical
prompt, one of your options is to hit ESC for text mode.......after
hitting ESC, at the boot: prompt type in "linux 1" (no
parenthesis)......after linux loads you will be presented with a prompt for
the root password.....You will then be in "single user" mode.....run YaST
or whatever and make your changes........good luck!

officialy stated from Red Hat, they are _not_ going to support an install
on reiserFS..
So I'ts upto the poeple, finding it nessesary with a distro which have
reiserFS supported during indstall, making a new iso file, where it can be
done, befor your gonna be able to do it that way. The regular way, theres
alot of partition type changing and imaging data from one partition to the
other, to get it done..

Subject: Re: Kernel Panic message
Date: Sat, 19 May 2001 00:05:43 GMT
Thank you for your reply. I upgraded from kernel-2.0.36-0.7 to kernel-2.0.36-3.
I think that is the most current version for RedHat 5.2. Unfortunately that
didn't seem to help the panic attack problem.
I did notice that when the server was rebooting it indicated the Kernel was
compiled in October 1998 when I compiled the new kernel just now. Is there a way
to tell what kernel is currently in use (I kept the source of both kernel
version on the server just in case my upgrade failed and I had to revert to the
previous version)?
Another thing I just noticed: I plugged the SCSI hard drive into a new SCSI
cable port and the problem seems to have stopped (at least for now). Could that
have been causing the trouble?
Thank you,
Sonny
