Ok, this is what I did recently...
Mount your new hdd on for example /mnt.
Then copy everything on your / filesystem to /mnt by using cp -a.
Obviously you don't want to copy /mnt and /opt.
Change /etc/lilo.conf to point to your new hdd and run lilo with the new config.
You might need to change the entries in /etc/fstab

That's it I think.
Good luck!

It displays a list of all functions and variables in the kernel. That
makes depmod able to find out which unresolved symbols (function names /
variable names) is in the kernel - and which symbols are in another
module.

/lib/modules/kernel-version/

Yep. You also have to install the kernel. Try to do a make bzdisk (with an
_emtpy_ floppy in the drive. If that goes ok, you could install it by
doing an 'installkernel' (perhaps this does not exist in Mandrake?).

Or you could copy System.map and arch/your-architecture/boot/bzImage to
/boot and add an entry in /etc/lilo.conf.

But are you really sure, you want to run an experimental and possibly
unstable kernel?

Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2000 17:50:00 GMT

Hi,

I was trying to mount my windows logical drives on linux. I used
linuxconf. I specified the file system as fat32 (fdisk shows the
partition type as fat32..are filesystem type and partition type the
same?). When the machine boots i get an error message saying that the
mount has failed since the file system type is not recognized. But
after logging on as root and if i give mount /dev/hda6 (windows d
drive) on some directory, there is no problem. I am able to see all the
files. Can somebody help me rectify the problem while booting. (What is
the maximum number of partitions that can be mounted ? I looked in
Howtos but could not find one which shows how to do this. I am sure
linux 6.2 had one).
(I tried using vfat32 also)

Thanking you,

Actually, when I recently installed Debian 2.2, it did not dump
me into dselect. It used some other tool that allowed be to
choose 'tasks' that I wanted to do, like C++ programming or
Perl developement. Then the first time I ran 'dselect', it
installed a bunch-o-packages that *it* thought I should have.

I've also found that if there is any sort of dependency 'issue',
it seems like 'dselect' will not complete the installation. It
indicates this by coming back to the 'install' menu item instead
of moving to the 'configure' menu item. Rerunning 'install'
often resolves the problem (as the message on the screen tells
    me. :)

'dselect' to be replaced? Well... When it works, it works well.
But when I want to override it, it really becomes a pitched
battle. Perhaps there are features of which I'm not aware, but
when I have to wrestle to get the S/W to do what I want (even
though it thinks it knows better) then I start to want to move
on. It was 'dselect' that moved me away from Debian in the
    first place.

Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2000 17:55:37 GMT

Hi,

I have a redhat linux installed on my system. When ever I opened X
server using startx the letters and icons were very very small. I
thought that this was due to high resolution and used X configurator to
change the resolutions to 640 x 800 and 1024 X ..... I made sure that i
gave this in all the four bit lengths (8,16,32 and 24) and now whenever
I open the X server it always opens in 8 bits per pixel mode. I
checked this out using xdpyinfo (The only depth available was 8). Then
i tried to use startx -- -bpp 16. Even that did not work out.

Can somebody help me to get the 16 bpp mode running. I desperately need
it for some image displaying programs.

Is there anyway to change the resolution with out going to
xconfigurator ?

Thanks a lot,

Use the source rpm (src.rpm) and create a patch file for the
Makefile which you'd need to add to the spec file. Get it?

Add it to /etc/lilo.conf and then run /sbin/lilo to update the MBR.

How old? :) If you think "old" means a Pentium MMX, you'll be

I played MP3's successfully on my wife's NEC Versa 4080H

the really high-bandwidth ones. My Versa 2000 (1995 486-75)

mp123 or whatever it's called, I'd guess.

Well, it seems that I've missed some fun!

I've installed Debian 2.1 and 2.2 on a number of occasions (as a newbie)
with dselect running the show, and things have always gone very well.

I hate to think what sort of system I'd have ended up with in the
absence of dselect. Having said that, apt-get is pretty cool.

Hi.
Dunno for this king of NIC, but yes, you are close to the solution
now. You can find a lot of diag/set programs at http://www/scyld.com.
For 3COM I had success this way. After that, you have to mention the
right option when ytou load the module. Options depends of the NIC
type of course.

Good luck

Ryan,
Assuming your choice of MTA is sendmail, I would recommend using Redhat.
It comes with default m4 macro configuration files that can get you
started. Generating configuration files (sendmail.cf) using m4 macro
processor is intended to be easier than creating one by hand.

Some books/howto that might help are (apart from the Orielly sendmail
(Bat) book)
Sendmail for linux by Richard Blum
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/howto/RH-sendmail-HOWTO/c15.html

Hope this helps!

Hi!

I've modified my bash startup file ($HOME/.bash_profile) to include the
path
to the JDK as follows:
 PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:/usr/java/jdk1.3/bin
I've modified the system startup file (/etc/profile) as well, to read:
 PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:$PATH:$HOME/bin:/usr/java/jdk1.3/bin

When I reboot the system and type:
 echo $PATH
or
 which java
I can't see any changes (no sbin, no jdk1.3) and java is not found. None
of the
startup files are loaded. Why? Something is setting my $PATH the wrong
way (my
PATH shows some missing kde2 directories...).
I've tried renaming my .bash_profile to .profile, but no way.
However, if I type
 . $HOME/.bash_profile
the new $PATH is loaded.

I wish to know the way to set the $PATH at startup without having to do
it by
hand. I want to know which of the thousands files in my hard disk is
responsible for the $PATH I have.

Thank you for reading this message.

Partition table entries are not in disk order

=================================
My comments:

1) These are the Primary partitions (from PartitionMagic 5.0 but I use the
linux device designations here
 for your convenience)

hda1, hda2, hda3 and the Unallocated space

2) Interesting that there is no hda4. That must be because logical
partitions must start with 5

3) I gave the boot device location of hda3 during the installation.
Maybe I shouldn't have been so specific with the 3? But that's where it is!

4) I looked again the partition table I had for Mandrake 7.1. The only
difference is that I had all linux partitions inside the Extended partition
and they were all logica. It worked for LILO.
Here I have hda3 as a separate primary partition. But that should not
matter, right? After all it is a boot partition and it cannot hurt to have
it as primary.
Yet it doesn't work. As I said when I enter any choice lilo just sits there
doing nothing. Clearly, it cannot find the boot device.

It's a mistery to me why the floppy booting works.

Thanks for your help,

Peter
