Subject: HELP! - Problems booting KDE
Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2000 13:36:14 -0000
After installing Caitoo (well, that was the last thing I did before KDE
died), I am being presented with the following message when KDE gets to
'starting interprocess communications'
There was an error setting up inter-process communications for KDE. The
message returned by the system was:
Could not read network connection list. Please check that dcopserver program
is running!
1. What does this mean
2. How have I managed to screw up KDE?
3. How can I fix it?
Thanks for your help!
P.S. If it's any help, I can get all the other window managers to run, it
appears that it's just KDE that I've stuffed.

That's interesting. What distribution are you using? My RH6 says...
# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have
networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)

You might want to check in /var/log to see if the spooler dumps
anything there. I'm running CUPS and I'm not that familiar with
debugging lpd. Make sure that the copy of Ghostscript that lpd is
using is the right one, though; that error has popped up a number of
times (someone installs a new copy of Ghostscript with the stp driver,
but there's another copy elsewhere that is the one that lpd uses).

I wrote the above up from my mind (in my /etc/inittab):
# /sbin/init.d/rc takes care of runlevel handling
#
# runlevel 0 is halt
# runlevel S is single-user
# runlevel 1 is multi-user without network
# runlevel 2 is multi-user with network
# runlevel 3 is multi-user with network and xdm
# runlevel 6 is reboot
l0:0:wait:/sbin/init.d/rc 0
l1:1:wait:/sbin/init.d/rc 1
l2:2:wait:/sbin/init.d/rc 2
l3:3:wait:/sbin/init.d/rc 3
#l4:4:wait:/sbin/init.d/rc 4
#l5:5:wait:/sbin/init.d/rc 5
l6:6:wait:/sbin/init.d/rc 6

Just the same as I wrote down fom my head...:-)
I'm using SuSE, I don't know of any other distros, but that's the way it
has been with SuSE
since I use it (perhaps ~5 years ago). I have heard of differnces
between SuSE and other distros like your RH,
but that even the runlevel definitions are not the same, that's really
strange....:-(

AFAIK, not at the moment. I've heard rumors that drivers are under
development, but AFAIK they aren't yet available. For more information,

Thanks, Skip. I figured out the /etc/X11/XF86Config "Screen" section. The
X server uses the highest resolution you have set, and any smaller
resolution is like zooming in. I just set the maximum resolution to the one
I wanted to use, and it works fine.
I appreciate your help.
Thanks.

I feel like an idiot.
I'm trying to get the good ol', command line editing and history going
on. So I can use vi commands to move back and forth in my command
history from the command line, and use vi commands to edit the command
line, etc. you know what I"m talking about.
I'm running RH6.2. Now, I actually got it to work one day, for about 10
seconds, and then it stopped working. I don't remember what I did, it
was a couple months ago and I got frustrated and said screw it.
So anyway, I'm trying to get it working again, I can't live without it,
and so I've put the following in my .bash_profile :
export EDITOR=vi
export VISUAL=vi
set -o vi
and of course source the file again, and it still doesn't !@#$ work.
What the hell am I doing wrong?

These 2 aren't need for command line editing (they should be set
anyway).

That should work, try it at the command line. If that fails do a ps.
Does bash show up or some other shell? Try typing bash, then set -o vi
if that fails then there is something very wrong.

Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2000 13:32:15 -0600
I just downloaded the image files off of Redhat and burned them to CD and
created my boot disk. Tried to install and am getting a message that states
"Error- I could not find a Red Hat Linux CDROM in any of your CDROM drives."
I have tried this on two different systems and am getting the same message.
According to the RedHat instructions all I have to do is place the file
7.0-respin-disc1.iso on the first cd and create the boot disk. Is there
other files that should be included on the cd? Anyone had this problem?
Thanks

Actually the link I sent is mostly for winmodems. Is that an external

This sets the default editor? This hasn't anything to do with command line
editing and history.

set -o vi should work, but I've had problems before with my TERM,
try
export TERM="xterm";set -o vi
from the command line and see what happens.

You chose RH.
The default RH setup sources /etc/inputrc and it kills the <esc> key.
Create a one line file ~/.inputrc containing
set editing-mode vi
And add at the end of bash_profile
export INPUTRC=~/.inputrc

Run Kppp and click on setup go to the modem tab and click on query modem
and see what that comes up with. That should give you some clue as to
what's going on. Actually, first go to Device tab and see tha the
right selection is made there, it should say /dev/ttyS0 if it's
connected to the first serial port, or com1, or it should say
/dev/ttyS1 if it's connected to the second serial port, or com2. (It
IS an external modem, Right?) The Flow control should be set to
CRTSCTS, line termination should be CR, there should be an x in the box
where it says Use lock file.
Go to Modem Commands and check to see that the commands look ok. Should
probably be just generic commands I'd suppose:
Init string: ATZ
Dal string: ATDT
Hangup string: +++ATH
Oh yea, you should probably try HardDrake. Click on the main menu
button then up to Configuration>Hardware>HardDrake. From there choose
Modem and there your modem should be listed and you can click on Run
Configuration Tool at the bottom. See what happens.
