You download and make a CD from the web and then you run Linux from the CD.
It will not install onto your hard disk. You need a pretty current hardware
configuration, but it might fit your objective. See it:

Not sure how to tell the difference :) but it is a logitech,
"mouseman, serial-mouse port", it says under the mouse. I think when
I installed Linux, I said PS/2.
but even if it is PS/2, why should the OS hangs when removing
the mouse? suppose the cable slips off, this should be no cause
for the OS to hang? from a user point of view, this does not seem right,
I just at least be able to use the keyboard to cleanly shut down the system.

I had a rather severe timekeeping issue on the box I run ntp on and as a
result the system believed it was 1999 for some reason. ntp would not
correct the time and sync it with a known ntp server on the cloud until I
got the time "close". By close for me was within minutes. After this, I
watched ntp slowly but surely sync the time on my ntp server against a
public ntp server until they were even. Then my systems which tap the ntp
server started changing ever so slightly until they were in sync also. I
would state, at a subjective level, that this took about 3 minutes. But
probably more like 5 to 10.

You can't set up the permission of xcdroast 0.98 alpha to run as a non-root.
(I tried :( ) Wait for a later version.
In early version of xcdroast, I got it to work by giving the ownership of
cdrecord, xcdroast and the /dev/scd0
to a trusted user or a group.

Thanks for the reply.
Do you mean to add export PATH to /etc/profile file? Because it's already in
there.
I've tried executing export PATH after I modified the /etc/profile file but
I get the following:
bash: export:
'~/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/opt/kde2/bin:/usr/local/bin': not a

Subject: fdisk/MBR
Date: Tue, 26 Dec 2000 09:39:45 GMT
After a unsuccessful attemp to install Caldera Edestop 2.4, I decided to
remove it. To erase the boot manual, I use the fdisk/MBR command to clean the
boot sector. After that, my windows 98 works perfectly. But my other
partitions in the same hard drive are missing. I have a 30GB ATA hard drive
and divided into 3 partitions: one is C which the Windows is resided. The
other two are partition I used to store files. Right now, fdisk tells me I
have a 8GB partition, which is C: dirve. and 24GB of empty spaces. The
information is obviously wrong: my C: is only 4GB, not 8GB. Can anyone tell
me how to change back MBR so that I can access my other two partitions?
Much thanks for your help!

First update your kernel to the latest stable version 2.2.18, you can find
it in http://www.kernel.org.
Then configure your kernel and modules. One of the first options on the
kernel is selecting the CPU. I advise you to click on the help button on
every option you choose.
I don't like KDE nor GNOME i think it's a cheap copy of Windows. I prefer
WindowMaker. Why? Simpler, faster and not and original.
Good luck,

also check if you're not running the idled daemon by default with the option

the big fault you probably made was installing lilo into the MBR - NEVER do
this when other operating systems are hanging around.
to solve this question:
create a linux bootdisk
make sure you can boot your linux from this disk :) (no kidding, this is
most overlooked ...)
then, boot your computer using a WINDOWS-bootdisk (make sure you've got
FDISK on that disk)
when booted up, type fdisk /mbr at the command prompt.
then reboot and see if windows boots up ... (this MUST work)
then, boot your linux with your linux rescue disk :) (see above)
enter your system, and install lilo in the /BOOT partition!
activate this partition for automatical bootup.
...should work fine.
contact me for further questions.
bye, michael

Subject: 2 HDs and GRUB
Date: 26 Dec 2000 13:56:33 GMT
Hi all,
I hope this is OT here:
I have two hds in my system. No1 with win98, no2 with Mandrake
7.2, grub sits on no2.
In grub's menu.lst, I have an entry for windows:
title win
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
root (hd1,0)
chainloader +1
This works ok: I can boot windows, I can boot linux. BUT:
Windows will see the second hd and and will assign D: to
(hd0,0). Not what I want, I don't need a "dead" drive in
explorer.
So I tried to add this line to menu.lst in the win section:
hide (hd0,0).
Works fine, too. Windows no longer sees hd0,0 and I only get the
drive numbers I want.
But: On the next boot, grub won't be able to see itself. I don't
get the menu, I just get the command prompt. Typing "unhide
(hd0,0)" here, will do the trick, but somehow I'm too lazy to do
this on every other boot.
Is there some way to make grub issue the unhide command in stage
1?

I've put up a small linux SuSE gateway, I have a problem I can't seem to
solve: when I telnet from a client machine (win2k using CRT version
3.1.1 telnet client) and use vi to edit a file, I can add new lines and
delete them, but I cannot delete existing lines. It won't let me.
Any suggestions?
I tried using a different telnet client (token2), but the problem
persists. I believe it's on the linux side of the system.
The second question is, how do I find out how much free space there is
left in a partition? The "free" command gives me only info on the swap
partition and RAM, correct?
sorry for my english

Hi all
I've deleted files in / directory as root. If the
deleted file is from any extended partition then it can be
recovered using "debugfs" command. But since it is from /
directory that cannot be done as that command involves
unmounting the filesystem for recovering. Can anyone suggest
any way to recover the files?
Can anyone suggest how to configure lost+found directory
so that the deleted files are automatically tranferred to
that directory?

Hi everybody,
I have an HDD of 20GB. I have two partititions, the first one is a NTFS
for a Win2000 an the second one is a linux native partitition for a Red
Hat Linux.(I haven't overwritten the MBR and I have instaled LILO)I can
boot Windows without any problems, but Linux can't be run without the
boot floppy I've made during the instalation. I've heard that there
might emerge problems with the booting of Linux if the linux partitition
is placed after the 1024 cylinder of the hard drive. That's exactly the
case with me.
Can anybody tell me if that can be fixed!
Thanks in advance!

Not necessary to hard wire! Mine is in p&p and I turn p&p off in the bios.
That way the bios will set up one of the available serial ports on the
modem. It works in both Windows and linux.

Hi Zdavko,
I am relative newbie to Linux to, but here is the way I do this.
I use the Windows 2000 loader to do this,
you will then get the choice Windows 2000 Professional or Linux.
You get this where you now get the message Windows 2000 Professional
and it waits for 30 seconds (unless you chaged that)
I used a freeware tool bootpart, which does this for you.
It looks complicated, but follow the manual and it is a piece of cake.
To find bootpart, do a search in a searchengine, and if you can't find
it, mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Good luck,
Eduard

Then it probably is a PS/2 that could be plugged into either the
serial or mouse (PS/2) port via an adapter. The serial port is
a DB-9 rhomboidal D-shell connector that can fit 9 pins. A PS/2
port takes a round mini-DIN connector identical with the keyboard.

I don't think the OS hangs. I think the hardware hangs, and the
OS is helpless. Not that I'd recommend anyone try hot unplugging
PS/2, but do you see the same behaviour under MS-Windows*?
On hot [un]plugging what happens is the four PS/2 connections
(ground, +5V, data and clock) are [un]made in different order.
For a few milliseconds you may have two or three of the four.
It is harmful to try to power the device through the clock or
data lines when the +5V is disconnected. Similarly, it is
harmful to try to drain through clock or data when ground is
disconnected. Small fractions of a second count. Count
yourself lucky that you only locked up hardware (SCR
latch-up on the kbd controller?)
