I did get X to work...I had to DL the XFCom X server and the apgart.o module
and install them...it took me a little while to figure out how to properly
set them up in the XFConfig file but eventually got it.. only problem I have
found so far is that the 24bit color isnt very smooth :-( XFCom has limited
support but atleast I got the 810 chipset working!! :-)
now all I need to do is get rid of this god-forsaken winmodem!!!!!!!!

In my experience with the business world money is everything.

Just as with proprietary software users who need extensive support and
"accountability" can negotiate a contract with the author. Unlike the case
with proprietary software, such users have the alternative of negotiating
such a contract with a third party: he has the source, the lack of which is
the only thing that sets vendor support apart from third party support in
the proprietary world.

How could Debian "exploit" the GPL (or anything else)? Do you understand
what Debian is?

Some of those "volunteers" are paid (not by Debian) to work full time on
Debian. In any case, we do not mind at all that people make money from
Debian. The right to do so is a requirement of the DFSG.
Last year I made $25,000 as a direct consequence of my free software
efforts. There is no way I would have made a penny from my software had
I not released it under the GPL and put it in Debian.

I think that the developers are quite competent to decide what is fair to
them.

Wrong.

A "huge" profit selling software that anyone can sell? ROFL.

Wrong. I still own the copyrights on my stuff and only I can distribute
the software under any license other than the GPL.

Then you should learn a bit more about it. You don't understand free
software at all well.

I have tried this on two machines, therefore I screwed up twice.
I am uisng the latest version of ProFTP. (inetd)
I can set the config file to standalone, and it work fine. When I try
to
do it with inetd, I get service unavailable, and the logs only show
that it refused service to me. (logging in from a seperate tty on the
same machine.
I am using the RPM version of the program which seems to set up
pam.d/ftp, and inetd.conf
automatically. I noticed that their is no ftpusers file, nor any
reference to it. also no ftpaccess or ftphosts file. I 'assume' since I
so far haven't found it in the docs, this is because of the proftp.conf
file, and how it works.
I found a reference when running it in standalone mode with debug, that
it wanted to get hold of a file called /misc/.ftpaccess which I could
find no reference to in the pam.d/ftp file or inetd.conf, or
proftp.conf.
I am not clear what mechanism is stopping me, nor how do uncover it. I
tried changing the inetd.lconf file to run in the recomended debug mode
as I did in standalone mode (where everything worked perfectly)
I should mention both machines are running portsentry and bastille for
those who may be familiar with it.

Thank you very much for that - I've since got hold of partition magic and it
says that I have circa 760 cylinders in total. There's no BIOS option so I
guess that it must be set to LBA mode...
My father didn't like the sound of adding extra/newer things to the standard
distribution as neither he or I have any experience with linux, so I made
him buy the partition magic with boot magic - nice five-year-old style setup
that even he can understand!
Thanks again for the tip - if I ever get my sticky mits on my own PC I'll
try it.

Do you want a SECURE web server ?. None of the distributions will give you
an enough secure system out-of-the-box, you must reconfigure many things
after installing. In short, any distro will do, but be sure to reconfigure
risky parameters, uninstall unnecessary software, stop unneeded services,
patch or upgrade kernel, libraries and applications and keep up to date on
known vulnerabilities (www.securityfocus.com, www.cert.org).
There is a throrough document on how to secure a Red Hat Linux installation
in http://www.openna.com. It is named "Securing and optimizing Red Hat Linux
6.2", and is soon to be published as a book.

Subject: Problem installing RH 6.2 on a 30G drive
Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 09:52:03 -0700
I can't seem to get this configuration to boot. My one 30G drive is
partitioned as the following:
First 7G: FAT 32 for my Windows 98 (C:)
Extended partition from the 7G to the end:
-> 8G partition for Linux ext2 (/dev/hda5)
-> ~250 MB Linux swap (/dev/hda6)
-> 14G FAT 32 (D:)
Machine:
PIII 800 with 128 Mb RAM (Dell 4100 series)
PROBLEM:
I used Partition Magic 5.0 to created the extended and linux
partitions above. I read somewhere that the LILO doesn't work quite
well with the linux partition above the 1024 cylinder border, thus I
tried to put the beginning of my linux partition within the first 8G.
After I've installed Redhat 6.2 (successfully), LILO first just
shows the "LI" not the "LO", then when I used the bootdisk created with
the 6.2 distribution, typing "linux /dev/hda5" would get me this 0x10
error. (Somebody tells me what 0x10 error means!) One thing that I
haven't tried is to put the /boot within the 8G border, but this limit
seems to refer only to the LILO, not the boot disk in general. I'm just
wondering where my problem is. Is it PMagic? Redhat? LILO? or just
the drive is faulty (not likely)?
Thanks in advance.

You'll need to grab a tuner app like XawTV.
Also Try:

modprobe tuner
And report on the results. Those commands should load your drivers.

The term "popular" is MEANINGLESS in consumer computing. DOS3
was more "popular" than contemporary Macintoshes despite the
likelihood that someone like you would pay the extra money to
not have to deal with DOS3.

If your SB is ISA, you can configure it with the isapnptools. I assume both the
sound card and the modem work under Win98, so boot Win98, get the resources
from there (I/O addresses and IRQs), then configure the sound card (and the
modem, if it's ISA) with the isapnptools.
Before you do that, check if you have a conflict. Configure the modem first,
connect and download some file from somewhere. While downloading, look in
/proc/interrupts, /proc/ioports, and see the rerources used by the modem.
Then configure the sound card, and see if you have indeed a conflict (you
probably do).

I just saw a previous post of yours about the same problem. I understand that
the modem is ISA. The sound card cannot be on com2!!! Com2 (/dev/ttyS1 under
Linux) is a serial port. The sound card is either PCI or ISA. If you use the
isapnptools, it goes like this:
Save /etc/isapnp.conf if there is one:
mv /etc/isapnp.conf /etc/isapnp.conf.old
Make a new one
pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf
Uncomment the resources for your modem and sound card as you got them from
Win98.
isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf
Tell the kernel what settings your modem is using. For instance, if you set the
modem on IRQ 11, then
setserial /dev/ttyS0 irq 11
(man setserial, pnpdump, isapnp for more).
That should do it.

Subject: RH 6.2 X window - black screen only
Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 17:30:27 GMT
I've installed RH6.2 and everything installed fine except that X
windows with GNOME (haven't tried KDE install) keeps giving me a black
screen. The mouse pointer appears fine, and when I move it around the
mouse pointer icon changes from arrow to window resize, etc as if the
desktop is there and working.
I've tried switching to a console (CTRL-ALT-F1) and back since I seen
some posts on this making it work, but I've had no luck.
I've had Caldera w/ KDE on this machine before.
Also, during setup, testing the X windows configuration gives the same
black screen, so I just skipped the test during subsequent setups to
get the OS installed.
I have a Diamond Stealth 3000 3D Pro which seems to be a supported card.
I've tried both custom and workstation installations and still get the
same behavior.
Hopefully some one can help.
I dl'ed the disto so I can't call support.
I think thats all the rambling for now.
TIA,
Alex

Hello,
I just had this problem today, and I found this on the RedHat site :
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/faqs/rhl_general_faq/FAQ-5.html#ss5.3
You must activate LBA disk access...

Rob,
Linux will install on a partitioned harddrive with Win98. The best way to
get started, imho, is to buy a Linux guide with the Linux distribution on a
cd attached to the guide. You can find nearly every popular distribution at
Barnes and Nobles or OfficeMax.
