I'm running redhat 7.0 and I need to update ghostscript. Redhat comes
with gnu ghostscript 5.50 and I just installed the apsmagic filter and
the installation program told me I needed ghostscript 6.0 (aladdin). The
most recent release is 6.0 so I thought that I would put that in.
My question is, How do I go about installing Aladdin ghostscript 6.50
over GNU ghostscript 5.50 without screwing everything up. The GNU
version is in rpm form, and the alladin is a .tar.gz. My thoughts were
to remove the gnu version (rpm -e) just before I installed the aladdin.

Subject: Problem wirh Ring and DTMF detection in voice mode
Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2000 13:25:08 GMT

I am trying to write a C program on Linux to answer the phone in voice
mode. When the phone rings I get a <DLE>R (as expected), but for the
following rings I get bytes that I can not interpret. (In voice mode
the ring's come in differently to data mode).

I use at+fclass=8 to get into voice mode.

It all works fine under minicom, and under Hyperterminal on windows,
and I have tried 2 different PC's (but same modem) - and with 2
different Linux distributions

On minicom I can see <DLE>R<DLE>R .. several times - one R for each
ring of the phone. In my C program I used a debugger to look at the
bytes and the following bytes in this order
10 <DLE>
52 R
00
60
0C
E6

If I get more rings the pattern 60,0C, E6 repeats but I get no more R
characters.

If I am in data mode (not voice), then I get the RING sequence
repeatedly, with no problem, so it is only a problem when <DLE> is
involved and there is no carriage return - but I do not know if
either of these points is significant.

I thought maybe the serial port speed was changing after the first
ring. I set the serial port to slower rates but it made no difference.

If I type AT after the first ring, and get an OK back, then the
following ring comes in fine (as <DLE>R). So sending something from
the computer to the modem seems to reset whatever has gone wrong.

Maybe it is possible that there is some autobauding happening every
time a carriage return goes from the computer to the modem, but I can
not find any way to control this. I have tried looking at the source
of minicom to learn more, but it does not seem to be doing anything
special in this department.

Does anyone know if there is a program simpler than mimcom, that does
really dumb mapping from the terminal to a serial port?

When I get the phone to manually answer I want to interpret DTMF
codes, but I run into exactly the same problem.

Any help appreciated,
     Niall Murphy

Hi Craig,

Yep it is old but checking things out before having a bash at ver 7.0 ;),

Btw it was sndconfig that was kicking back that error ;(

I recently installed StarOffice for Linux on my old P100 machine (32MB
ram,4GB disk) and sadly the performance is too slow (it crawls!) for me. I
want to uninstall it, how do I do that?
BTW, if you have an alternative office suite for Linux, that will run a
little faster on my machine let me know, thanks.

My system runs Mandrake 7.1 without the NIC. When bootup Linux, says eth0

there something wrong with tulip.o ??? or another drivers?

Subject: RH 7.0 cannot find address of localhost
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Victor S. Miller)
Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2000 15:39:46 GMT

I have RH 7.0 running on a 166Mhz Pentium MMX with 32MB of memory.
The system is dual boot (using LILO) with Windows '98, and a network
card Intel EtherExpress 10Mb. Everything had been running ok until
this morning, when I noticed that I didn't seem to be able to
communicate with the outside net. When I looked at dmesg I saw a
bunch of XMT errors (but I have a suspicion about that -- see below).
Doing ifconfig eth0 down following by ifconfig eth0 up (as root), made
things worse -- now name service didn't work! So, I decided that the
best thing to do was to shutdown and restart. Everything seemed to be
going ok (including initializing lo0 and eth0) until booting got to
the point of "Starting lpd:" -- things then hung up for about 2
minutes, and then I got a message saying that it couldn't obtain the
IP address of localhost. It wouldn't proceed any further. I tried
shutting down, powering off, and rebooting with the same thing. When
I boot Win '98, everything works fine (including communicating with
the outside network).

I'm connected to my cable modem via a Linksys 4 port router. One
thing that I do notice is that when I've booted Linux from a power off
state, that the full duplex light on the Linksys is off, but when I
boot Win '98, the full duplex light comes on. And, if I reboot into
Linux (without powering off), the full duplex light stays on. It's
under those circumstances that I get lots of XMT errors on dmesg.

So, I'm rather desparate at this point. Does anyone have a
suggestions as to how I can fix my problem?

Tim, is your network card plug 'n play? I had a similar problem with
my network card. I finally had to go into /etc/isapnp.conf and
comment out the sections having to do with the card. When I rebooted,
everything came up fine.

Good luck!

at the moment i have exim and mutt on my workstation and i like the
combo, exim uses my isp's smtp server as a smart host to send mail .
i am about to set up a firewall/server for my box and one other as
a masqued network, do i need exim on both w/stations, or can i install it
on the server and forward the mail from my box to the server where exim
will use my isp to send the mail. does this sound strange? is it the done
thing? i dont want to use sendmail ( too complex, and overkill i feel ),
but is exim the right decision, it's the only mtu i have used and is
simple to setup.

flames, suggestions etc greatly appreciated.

cheers max

ps a simple solution would be preferable, but i am not lazy and will do
research etc if needs be.

Do you have a line like this in /etc/hosts?

[hal@feenix hal]$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain

[...]

Or do you have any ipchains rules that might be inadvertantly blocking
access to that IP?

If you get ip masquerading up and running you can use on every
client machine of your new network exim and mutt who still point
to your isp's smtp server.

Check out this page how to set up masquerading:

Okay your best bet is to do the following

Do this in root

isapnp > /etc/isapnp.conf

You may have to have a look at the isapnp.conf and uncomment some in there.

then sndconfig

that should be working then.

If not, then get drunk and come back tomorrow and retry ;)

This doesn't sound like a linux problem to me. More a bootmagic one.
Can you boot linux from a floppy? Then go that way, and read up on what
might be the problem.

Hi All -

I'm trying to understand the syslogd and klogd. I'm experimenting with
different configuations in my syslog.conf file. It seems that all other
"facilities" behave as expected except "kern". "kern" seems to do it's own
thing and respond only to one rule (if that). I'm using logger to test it -
maybe that's the problem. BTW, the syslogd and klogd I'm using are RH7
binaries.

Thanks - Geoff

this out, but after i did the "./configure" command and all this stuff
ran down the console, the instructions said to type "make <blahblah>". i
followed the instructions, when i type anything with "make" the console
always says "command not found". i tried typing 'make' in the
/usr/src/linux directory to seee if anything hapens, but it said the
same thing. am i missing a package or something? is there an RPM that i
should install that wasn't installed in the setup?

i'm runing Linux Mandrake 7.0.... luckily i could atleast get the modem
working soi can post this. hehe,... thanks!

For your not-so-very-new-machine I would propose Siag (look at freshmeat)
as an Office-Suite. Maybe its not uptodate but it works well as far as I
can remember. I use StarOffice only for compatibility with M$-docs and xls,
for daily work I run Applixware 4.4.1. It doesnt cost too much, but I have
heard the new Version 5.0 is a bit buggy. If you are looking only for a
good wordprocessor, Abiword seems a good choice.

Good luck!
