I believe you can set the server to authenticate based on either a valid
pop login or by an smtp authorization. I've not done either, but I know
it's possible.
You might try basilix for webmail. It's fairly straight forward and the
scripts are easily changed if you want to add or remove graphics.

Subject: HELP! Can't install RH7.1 (Anaconda bombed)
Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 09:31:11 -0400
I'm trying a fresh install on my new Compaq Presario 5000 series PC
AMD 1GHz
384MB PC100 RAM
Voodoo 5 AGP graphics card
Intel eepro 10/100 ethernet
30GB UDMA hard drive
I booted my RH7.1 CD and no matter what option I chose (graphical, text,
expert install) they all bombed at Anaconda. The error message looks like
this:
--- error msg ---
Runnin anaconda - please wait...
install exited abnormally -- received signal 11
sending termination signals...done
sending kill signals...done
disabling swap...
unmounting filesystems...
/proc/bus/usb
/mnt/runtime
/mnt/source umount failed ()
/dev/pts
/proc
You may safely reboot your system
--- error msg ---
I've successfully installed W2k on this machine (plus the Windows ME
coming with the box), so hardware problems should've been ruled out.
Any suggestions on what to do next? Any 'alternative' install method that
doesn't require running Anaconda? (I read from RH support website RH7.0
used to have various anaconda problems - but it's RH7.1 I'm trying to
install)
Thank you SO MUCH!

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I can boot up into safe mode, but what
are some of the things that I should be looking for? After leaving
safe mode, I still can't boot up. I haven't looked at the bootlog
file, yet. I did install lilo (I think:) ).
Thanks,

Pan works just fine on a KDE system (just make sure that you have the
required Gome libs available)

I have the same problem with my install. Has a solution been found?
I tried each method (fdisk, partition magic, disk druid...), but I
always get the same out of space error. My partitions are /boot @

Are there any issues with linux on a large hd? Or is it an issue of the

Same problem, but I have fat logical partition(s) also...
What to do then? Windows, I think, will refuse to see fat on 0x85

You need the newest version of lilo, to boot a kernel above the 1024
cylinder. And I think you need a 2.4.4 kernel to boot on a P4.

Subject: No Web Access for Linuxconf
I have recently setup my RH7.0 linux box as a gateway for my home
network. I would like to store it away and have remote administration
through linuxconf's Web access option. I have set up my gateway as
described in the Home-Networking Mini-Howto (IP Chains and Hosts.allow
and Hosts.deny being possible problems). From my win98 box, I can ping
both the inside and outside ethernet IPs of the linux box. I can access
the linux box though telnet, ftp, and the web server. I can browse the
web just fine. but when I try to go to port 98 of my linux box, nothing
happens (it just times out). I have enabled web access to linux conf,
and added the IP of my Win98 box to the linuxconf web access list. I
even went to the xinetd.d/linuxconf-web script and removed the
DISABLED=YES line, and reran xinetd. Still nothing. I downloaded and
installed the latest version of linuxconf (including an install of
libxml). I imagine it may have something to do with my ipchains setup,
but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

I have the same problem, but that was after a few upgrades. The 'fixed' font
won't let x start, also I can't log in on the terminals (C+A+F1), in single
bootup I went to /etc/X11 and added all the font paths to the XF86CONFIG by
hand. X will start after that and I get the ximian login, but I try to login
and I get kicked out. Seems like login is broke or maybe pam isn't working.
Anyone else have any ideas?

not really sure if this is the right place to post this or not, but i
have a problem with installing mdk 7.2.
i'm trying to put it on my laptop which has a problem with the cd-rom.
the cd-rom has a "mind of it's own" (somethings wrong with it where it
will read from it sometimes and other times it won't) but i do have a
reliable usb cd burner.
currently my laptop's hard drive is empty (using a floppy with the
cdrom.img to start installation) i make it to the f1 or enter screen
(first screen) now is there any way from here that i can get the
installation to go continue off the usb cd burner?
i can put windows back on if necessary but i'd like to have it be
mandrake 7.2 only and i'd like the installation to use the usb burner.
any ideas?
sorry if this isn't the right group to post. i wasn't sure where i
should put it.
thanks for any help!

This depends totally on what your needs are and what you intend to do with
the box. There are some general problems with running the os from a win9x
file system. Its slower by up to 25% just because the the way the os has
to handle the file structures. The second is that security on the file
system is weakened. I wouldn't put the system into a live environment
where there was a need for security.
The rest is really the same you boot into the os and the os does the rest
for you.
I would suggest a second drive if you've them money or an old one. Then
you've a better chance of keeping your other configurations pristine. I
suggest using partitioning software like partitions magic to resize the
partition. It relatively inexpensive, and the Linux versions like
Redhat, Suse, and Mandrake usually do a pretty good job of handling your
system install with the partitioning requirements that you described.
That is if you have adjusted that partitions, and you want to leave it
there.

I need a pointer on an nfs problem. Currently my systems are mounting

Suggestions would be appreciated.

There are a couple things that you can do. In xdm or other login
managers there is a file that is read when you login that sets which
display manager you want. The file is .xsession which is exactly the same
as .xinitrc. You can put in something like "exec <win_manager>" in either
file and it will startup when you login if you specify the default login
option. If you login on a console the .xinitrc is read when you type
startx or xinit at the prompt. If you want to changes the default login in
manager on Redhat its in the /etc/sysconfig/desktop file.

Steve;
Raid is pretty easy to setup under linux if that is what you have on the
sparc, and if it is supported under the os that you have. You would need the
right number of disk partitions of equal size or larger as you would with any
raid. You may want to read up on the setup though at www.linux-howto.com...
The doc is under the howto's and is named software-raid which is pretty basic
and easy for setup instructions. If you already have a hardware raid system
then you need to make sure it shows up under /proc/scsi. Then all you would
have to do os mount the /dev/sdXX drive/partition on a mount point some
where. This would be done with something like "mount -t ext2 -o rw, hard
/dev/sda1 /mnt/raidarray".

If your booting from the floppy boot lilo with the linux text option and
you get running. You will be immediately required to turn on a swap
partition when your through partitioning then the install will work
normally. They are getting pretty foul about what their install
requirements are.

The software raid will explain how to setup the /etc/raidtab. Then you
should be able to startup the raid daemon with only the first drive and then
hot add the next drive or partition to the set. You may have to fiddle with
it. You may also not add the second partition, startup the raid daemon, and
then hotadd the drive/partitions if I remember right. The best thing is to
read the doc.
