Did you setup /etc/resolv.conf with your ISP's DNS in it?

search yourdomain.com
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # ISP's primary DNS
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # ISP's secondary DNS

If you want to run your own nameserver I found these links to help.

It sounds to me like you installed GRUB in the MBR, and then when you
activated BootMagic, it wiped out GRUB. Your best bet is to boot Linux
with an emergency boot floppy or some such and install GRUB in the
Linux partition rather than in the MBR, if GRUB supports this.
Alternatively, you could switch from GRUB to LILO, which I'm positive
supports this option. If you don't have an emergency Linux boot floppy,
you may be able to boot the system with LOADLIN (on the installation
CD-ROM) and the kernel from an installation floppy. Copy the kernel and
LOADLIN to a floppy, boot DOS, and type:

LOADLIN VMLINUZ root=/dev/hda5 ro

Substitute the kernel name for VMLINUZ, and specify your Linux root
partition for /dev/hda5.

You can reinstall X11 by seeing what version of X11 you have:

rpm -qa | grep -i xfree

And then, from your original media:

   rpm --force -i XFree86-blah-blah.rpm

You may need to run Xconfigurator after that to re-create
/etc/X11/XF86Conifg.

You can

   rm -rf /path/to/staroffice

(usually found in /opt or /usr/local)

Just edit /etc/resolv.conf and add a line like this:

nameserver mynamerserver's ip address

(replacing with your nameserver's proper IP address)

I boot up my RedHat using text mode and use "startx &" to go to KDE.

I only have choice of either KDE or Gnome during RedHat installation,
not both. In this case if Gnome is not installed (I suspect), may be I
use RPMS to install Gnome.

Does it make sense?

Chris,

Yes, my /etc/hosts looks like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
192.168.0.8 gemini.xyz.com

It still takes very long to get the telnet login prompt. FTP connection
refused by RedHat.

I've never done this , so I am just guessing.
Does the make file exist in your working
directory.
Remember! if you call a program from its
residend direcctory you must preceed
it with " ./ " ie "./name " or the shell wont
see it

hi everyone,

I would like to install a quad-boot WIN98, WIN2000pro, WINNT4, Linux.
I
intend to use BootMagic from PartitionMagic 6.0.

1) In what order should I install the OS, does it matter? I eventually
plan to merge the WIN98 and WIN2000 partitions.

2) I'm a Linux newbie. Is there a file system that Linux supports that
both WIN98 and WIN2000pro support? I would like to have a partition
that allows me to share files (not applications) with all three OS.

Thanks everyone

Hi,

I'm a Linux newbie and would greatly appreciate any help anyone can
provide on this. I'm trying to install Mandrake 6.1 on a new system
with a SCSI CD ROM drive (Toshiba 3701). I have an adaptec 1505 ISA
card which worked fine under windows. I boot from the floppy when I get
to the SCSI adapter screen I select Adaptec 152x. Autoprobe fails to
detect the card, as is expected since the 1505 card has no BIOS. When I
try "specify options" and type "aha152x=0x340,9,7,1" the CD ROM does
light up briefly but the install program reports "can't find device
anywhere on your system."

Any suggestions on what else to try?

Thanks,

Neal

P.S. Besides the procedures, I would like to know the precautions and
limitations such as the maximum number of video card than supported,
either by the kernel, X or hardware spec.

It's not just Linux that needs a driver for this thing -- My W2K machines can't

directly from the that machine... Does something like that exist, or is there
an easier solution? Thanks!
