Get the redhat install disk. Put it in the machine you need a boot disk
for. at the LILO prompt type
linux root=/dev/hda2 ro

substitute whatever partition your root partition is on for hda2.

Should get you into your system. Then you can make a new boot floppy (see
man lilo for command line options).

I'm using Mandrake 7.0 on an AMD Athlon 750. My screensaver is just
a blank screen. If I let it sit for too long, it goes to sleep and won't
wake up. So I think in my case it's probably an APM problem, not the
screensaver. Maybe something is set up wrong, or my hardware is strange.
I haven't felt like trying to figure it out. I'm too busy working on my
LFS system (http://www.linuxfromscratch.com). =)

During my installation of Mandrake 8.0
I selected the 80x50 font mode for

the bootloader (i.e. lilo) and
everything works fine except during the
loading process as the various system
software loads a line item which
reads "Load default fonts
[yes]" echos to the screen and all
of the screen text reverts back to
"normal" mode. Where is the
configuration file which would allow me
to force all of the text to 80x50
mode as I have done in the lilo
setting.

During the install I chose the
80x50 video mode - in the area where
you

have the various linux images file
name listed - but it is as if during
bootup time this setting is ignored.
I have even checked the lilo.conf file
and the "vga =" setting is
even listed there but it seems that
something is automatically forcing my
fonts bact to the normal mode. Any
ideas?

Thanks. I'll give it a go and see what I come up with. I didn't
understand the map-drive deal...so basically you need to trick the
bios to think that the secondary drive is the first drive and all
works fine with windows. Got it.

Subject: TERMCAP, curses, xterm-xfree86 & ssh woes...
Date: 23 May 2001 21:06:20 GMT

    Hello,
I am trying to configure Linux Mandrake 8.0 boxes. When I log in at
the desktop it works fine and the default TERM type is "xterm" and
curse based programs work. When I remotely log in to that same box
using ssh the TERM type mysteriously gets changed to "xterm-xfree86"
and curses based program do not work anymore. I am using /bin/tcsh as
the login shell and for historical reason I need the default shell to
be tcsh. When I change the shell to "/bin/bash" the problem goes away.

What is driving me nuts is that I do not know how to change it or
where the TERM type gets changed. In my /etc/csh.cshrc, /etc/csh.login
and $HOME/.[t]cshrc files I can echo $TERM and it is "xterm", but ---
somewhere --- at the last moment it gets switched to
"xterm-xfree86". Anyone know how this can be avoided? Right now my
only solution is to manually type "setenv TERM xterm" after I log
in. Setting TERM it in any startup script I am aware off has no effect
(since the TERM type gets changed after they are executed).

Alternative, how to I get the "xterm-xfree86" term working with
curses?

Any ideas? Anyone?

Sincerely,

   - henrik

Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 21:35:44 GMT

Greetings!

I'm finding it impossible to install anything rpms without getting 'failed
dependency' errors. I can overcome the errors by using --force or
--nodeps and 9 times out of 10, that works. The required objects are
installed.

Also, sometimes newly installed programs are failing to find required
libraries even though the libraries are in fact installed.

These may be two separate problems, I don't know. I've tried 'rpm
--rebuilddb' and I've run ldconfig but to no avail.

I'm running Mandrake 7.2 and I just did a very tricky update to KDE-2.1.1
(where I did a _lot_ of --forcing and --nodeps-ing.

I need help diagnosing the issues and, especially, fixing the problems.

I have the 3rd edition and it would make a good beginners' textbook.
My own Linux "bible" however has become "Linux Installation
Configuration Use" by Michael Kofler, Addison Wesley (3rd edition out
I believe). No pretty graphics, all solid information and spendidly
translated from the original German.

Puh, sounds for me more as if you mucked up your system horrible.

Did you check "man ldconfig" and edited /etc/ld.so.conf accordingly?

However, I would backup important stuff and install from scratch.

Subject: SuSE 7.1 / 2.4.2 / USB / Canon Digital IXUS / GPhoto2 woes
Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 23:49:08 +0100

G'day all,

Forgive me if this is not the right place to post this type of question, but a
brief sampling of the current posts led me to think it was as good a place as
any. If it isn't please point me in the right direction....

Right: I have just bought a Digital IXUS camera, and I'm having "fun" getting
it to work. I got the latest libusb and gphoto2 from gphoto.org, made it all,
installed it no problems.

I cannot, however, auto-detect my camera from gphoto2.

I can manually set gphoto2 to the appropriate setting and once that is done, I
can download files from the camera. However, although they are named .JPG, they
can't be interpreted by any of the viewers I have. I did an od -c on one file
and it seemed to contain the string "DIGITAL IXUS", over and over again, before
what seems to be the actual image.

Also, when I tried to fetch multiple files, they all came out exactly the same
size, which I found rather odd. I therefore suspect that the entire contents of
the camera's RAM is being dumped into each file.

I also managed to get gphoto2 to (deliberately) delete the contents of the
camera's RAM, so there is definitely some communication going on there.

However, I couldn't swear that it's set up correctly. Also, I find that the
gphoto2 software seems to switch off the camera when it's finished doing any
given operation, which is annoying and frustrating.

I have a large log-file showing in painful detail what gphoto2 is doing, in
case anyone can understand it.

Things that worry me from the log are:
"usb_bulk_read: ioctl(IOCTL_USB_BULK): Invalid argument"
and
"Parsing exif structure
Not exif data
ERROR: Can not get preview for IMG_0001.JPG.
gPhoto2 reported the error 'Unspecified error' "

Any thoughts, comments or suggestions would be very welcome. Especially useful
ones. :-)

I'm no expert, so forgive me if I'm totally wrong, but I have to
take issue with this answer. I have an extended partition (hda5)
that contains three logical partitions, one swap and two ext2,
and Windows totally ignores the entire extended partition; no
assigned drive letters. Now, if I change one of the logical
partitions (/dev/hda7, for instance) to type 0x06 (FAT16), then
yes, Windows will assign a drive letter to it, even if it has
not yet been formatted. However, normally I leave the partitions
as I described above, and neither Win95 nor WinNT4 sees anything
in the extended partition at all.

No. Asking a hacker is not the least bit risky (execpt for the risk that

If the machine is there, so is the temptation (For crackers, that is.

I dont know about the modem... but how about do it to the NIC? Just use
that DOS setup program, and change the IRC "by brute force".
I have the same modem (2977) in a machine with 1 NIC. Never had a problem -
and works like a charm. Just used the setserial

Hope it helps,
