This is do-able, but if each OS is on its own partition, you'll have
used up all your primary partitions. (Separate partitions is the safest
way to handle this.)
> 1) In what order should I install the OS, does it matter? I eventually

I'd do either Win98 or WinNT first, followed by the other, followed by
Win2K, followed by Linux. I'd set up all the partitions first, though,
probably using PartitionMagic. The really critical item here is NTFS.
Win2K makes changes to NTFS that WinNT 4.0 can't handle without an
update (FixPack 4 from Microsoft). Therefore, be sure to install that
update BEFORE you install Win2K.

Yes: FAT (any variety). For NT 4.0 support, it'll have to be FAT-16 (or
FAT-12, but FAT-12 partitions are tiny).
FWIW, you might be interested in my book, _The Multi-Boot Configuration
Handbook_, which covers this and a lot more. Check

Subject: please help with serial port mouse
Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2000 16:16:03 GMT
Hello:
I read Serial-HOWTO and Serial-Programming-HOWTO and wanted to test out
why my serial mouse didn't work. I used the third example (in 3.3
Asynchronous Input of Serial-Programming-HOWTO) to open /dev/ttyS0.
But I never got any SIGIO, nor could I read any thing out of the device
(a serial mouse connected to COM1). I've tried on two very different
machines with two different mice. Does anybody know what was wrong?
The setserial command shows:
/dev/ttyS0, UART 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
/proc/ioports contains:
03f8-03ff : serial (auto)
If I open /dev/psaux for a PS mouse, the example works fine.
Thanks in advance,

Hi!
I wonder if you can help me out with this one.
I've done my "home work" before coming here, but found nothing valuable.
i have compiled/installed apache 1.3.14 with php 4.0.3pl1 as a module.
Now i want to upgrade to 4.0.4, since it has several bug fixes and addons in
respect to MySQL, something that is very important to me.
The question is, which is the best way to *cleanly* uninstall 4.0.3pl1?
Shall i erase all 4.0.3pl1 related files and directories, erase all
/usr/local/httpd/(...) and start all over again compiling apache with 4.0.4?
i'd appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks in advance.

My PC have an old Philips 15C monitor, I think the model is CM0200.
Installing RedHat 6.2 my monitor is not recognized nor configured, so
the maximum size I can get is 640*480.
As the monitor allows higher resolution, how can I configure it to have
an higher resolution? May I configure it as a newer (compatible) model?
Where can I look for a compatible configuration file?
Thanks

Hi there gurus and all.
I have RedHat Linux 7 installation CD. I love to try this on my Windows box
dual booting Win98/Win2000. Win 98 is in my c drive while Win2000 is in the

Unless Red Hat's changed things with version 7, it requires its own
dedicated partition. Given your rather odd arrangement, your best bet is
to shrink D: and/or E: to make room for new Linux partitions.
Alternatively (and better in some ways), you could shrink partitions and
move F: down, leaving room at the end of the drive. (This is assuming
you're talking about partitions and not physical drives -- but in the
latter case, you need to be more precise about how each drive is
partitioned.)
The trick with this is that Windows NT is very fussy about having its
partitions changed. I don't know offhand if the same is true of Windows
2000, but I'd advise caution -- back everything up first and be prepared
to re-install the OS from scratch, if it comes to it.
In any case, you'll need some sort of partition resizer. If D: and E:
are FAT, you may be able to make do with freeware utilities. I believe
the Linux Mandrake installer would do it, but the freeware FIPS will
only handle primary partitions. If D: and E: are NTFS, or if you just
want to avoid getting Mandrake just for its installation partition
resizer, the commercial PartitionMagic will do the trick.
Another option would be to use another distribution. This is probably
better if you just want to play with Linux a bit, because it requires a
less radical change to your existing system. I believe there's a version
of Mandrake that'll install in a FAT partition alongside Windows. IIRC,
it's called "Linux for Windows."
FWIW, my book, _The Multi-Boot Configuration Handbook_
(http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/) goes into this in more detail,
although it's a bit sparse on Win2K specifics. (Win2K was in beta when I
wrote the book, so I was working from my limited experiences with that
and unsure of what would change with the release version.)

(using Mandrake 7.0)
Using a soft modem I'm able to dial out using the Olitec driver, but
I can't get it to connect to my ISP.
I don't know if this is because of a problem with the driver or with
pppd. It dials my ISP's number, the ISP appears to accept to call and
then nothing happens, after a short while I get "NO CARRIER" error, I
think this is because my ISP has disconnected me.
Anyone know how I can find what's responsible (Driver or pppd
problem) ?

I have my Linux box (RH 7.0) configured to use gdm. Usually I'll just
lock in, and then click on lock when I'm not around which causes the
screensaver to immediately start (it also starts if I'm idle for a
certain period as it should). However, once in a while we have power
failures in the house, and so when the power comes back on, there is
the gdm screen. My question is: is it possible to configure gdm (or
something else), so that when there hasn't been any activity for a
while, a screensaver will start? If so, how.

Give us a print out of what modules you already have loaded. Try doing as
the root user "lsmod" and capture them to a folloup post. There are a few
modules which redhat should include and load upon demand. The interesting
one to see are whether st, sg, and a module for your adaptec card is already
loaded by redhat. RedHat by default includes almost the kitchen sink as
modules available for use.
