Subject: Corel Linux Installation
Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2000 23:30:03 GMT

I have been trying to install linux on my Dell 3800 laptop. The first 20
times I could not get past the detection of hardware because something was
wrong with the graphics card. I solved that by using both a Corel CD and
the cd from corel linux for dummies. I then tried to install and let it
create a partition, the installation just froze. I then tried using
partition magic and I couldn't find the parition on the installation. After
that, I tried installing on free space. It worked, but when I went to
restart I couldn't not boot in either linux or windows. After alot of
playing around I was able to get windows back, but I think I deleted linux,
I thought I deleted the partition, but the free space partition still
appreares in partition magic. What is going wrong, and how can I get it to
work?

                                           Thanks...

You still need a boot loader to start the kernel. Lilo can be configured
to only have one choice. You can also have it not display a prompt, but
a prompt with a short timeout might be better. Something like this for
/etc/lilo.conf maybe:

boot=/dev/hda                    (install Lilo in MBR)
install=/boot/boot.b (install boot.b as the boot loader)
map=/boot/map (where to write the map file)
prompt (optional - gives you the Lilo prompt)
timeout=20                       (timeout for prompt: 20/10 = 2 sec)
image=/path_to_kernel (where the kernel image file is)
root=/dev/your_root_partition (where the root partition is)
read-only (mount root read only until fsck runs)

A couple of those might be defaults and not actually needed. See the
Lilo docs for more information.

BIOS upgrade did more than fix the slow memory; /dev/hdb now cranks big
time. A big thanks to all you guys. I apologise if I came across kind of
sharp to some of you. I'm running on about 40h of no sleep now and got a
little cranky. Hope you'll forgive!

Check it out:

This machine really rocks now. Now for some evil VMWare performance

Thanks again,

>From what I've read all over the net today. There're enough improvement
to justify the upgrade to SuSE 7.0.

Especially for Windozlised newbies... With SuSE 7.0. Installation will
be fully automated, other than keying in the info for networking , or
info for ppp dial-up.

I'm not sure about this count, I cannot read German well. But seems like
SuSE 7.0 even will reconise Baillie (?Spelling?) code, and even a blind
person can install it.

And I never care for any games, or the latest 3D-Graphic cards. And I
don't use any IDE anymore. All wide SCSI LVD, FFS, LVM, SMP ,a decent
sound card. I don't even use IPCHAINS anymore. So, 2.4 kernel means
nothing to me. And I don't even think I'll upgrade for 2.4 kernel at
all. Everything I needed is already supported by default with SuSE's
2.2.14.

Never minded about the 2.4 kernel de jour.

But I hope SuSE has taken out all the stupid games from the Professional
version.

The important stuff are the apps.

And if you look carefully into SuSE 6.4. You'll find many of the
excellent stuff from the *BSD are included. That's a really good sign.

Combining the best of both opensource OS/s. (I've been hacking *BSD
stuff to run under SuSE, and SuSE's stuff to run under Free/Open/BSD
here for awhile.)

SuSE's end users will end up big winners, with a very stable, secure,
and painless to install and update platform. ;-)

I don't know. But sure they can fine trim, and optimised the code.

I've found that SuSE's kernel is quite a bit faster than many other
distros. Almost as fast as FreeBSD. (I've been using SuSE full time for
a couple years, together with *BSD, no dual boot here in 6 machines.
Started messing with Slackware since around 1994. Tried at least a dozen
distros. Dumped Windoz, stayed with SuSE, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and Solaris.)

While SuSE 7.0 may not be worth an upgrade from 6.3 or 6.4, it still is a good
distro for those trying Linux or SuSE for the first time. Prior to 7.0, SuSE
distros came on 6 CDs plus a 480+ page printed manual. That combination is now
being packaged as the PRO version, while a 3 CD version is 'personal' version.
The PRO is about $80 and the Personal is about $30. The net effect of the 7.0
release is to double the price of the 6 CD set and offer a cheaper version.
Also, YaST2 (the graphical sys admin tool) has been polished and a new tool,
ALICE, makes it's appearance.

My SuSE 6.3 is running perfectly, so I don't see a reason yet to upgrade. I
will upgrade, however, after SuSE makes the journaling system standard on the
install, and after KDE 2.0 comes out. Probably around 7.2, in 6 monts.
Meanwhile, all you folks who are trying to decide how to jump into Linux, or to
try SuSE, go ahead. It's a great distro!

from your error messages it looks like a resource conflict. does the card have

i'm using an IBM Auto16/4 ISA card. IBM LANStreamer's aren't supported.

I am trying to put together a little home network. So I got an old
machine and put RH 6.1 on it, bought a NIC and there my troubles
begin.

The NIC is a LinkSys NC100 (a 10/100, pci NIC)

I *think* RH "sees" it (it apears in /proc/pci).

But during boot, the start up fails.

When I run

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup ifcfg-eth0

I get "Delaying eth0 initialization."

I am stumped. Can anyone help?

Thanks for all your kind answers. Actually, I just needed to remove
/lib/modules/2.2.16. Then proceed with configuration, make and a final
depmod -a.
        It's working fine no.

Your answers also worked with this issue. Just enabling
"Use real mode APM bios call to power off" was enough. I hadn't selected
it in the first place because I misunderstood the "help" paragraph,
thinking that APM was only useful for laptops.
This doesn't work with SMP machines, however. And one of the servers
involved in the upgrading is a biprocessor. This server is attatched to
an UPS, which is programmed to command a "halt" to the computer when
some conditions are met (e.g. some minutes running on UPS, or it is
close to run out of battery). After the machine is powered down, the UPS
doesn't supply more power. But if the machine doesn't switch off
properly, the UPS will discharge wastefully. Is there any way to force
the use of APM even on SMP machines? I could enforce its activation when
the shutdown process is started.

If you're just sending and receiving all your mail through your ISP.
Just put down mail.yourISP.com or whatever the mail server at your ISP
is called.

If you want to send mail only directly, bypassing your ISP, then,
install a smtpd daemon, and name it mail.localhost.

If you want to receive email from outside bypassing your ISP, then you
need a fully qualified domain name, and a DNS pointer and MX record.(As
registered with Network Solution, or one of the domain name registra,
plus providing your ISP allows you to run your own server.

You can try:

rpm -i netscape474.rpm --force

But better do it with tar ball, or .src.rpm if you can.

Good luck.

You can boot off floppy.

Subject: Using Dell Perc 3/Di controller & new Adaptec Driver
Date: Wed, 02 Aug 2000 01:47:53 GMT

As some of us are (painfully) aware, some of Dell's Perc series of
Linux compatible controllers once used a binary only driver. This
limited Linux usage to the 2.2.14 kernel. This also caused problems
once the recent setuid kernel flaw was found. Note this is likely not
entirely Dell's fault (the RAID system was made by Adaptec).

On or about last Friday, Dell released a 2.2.16 (they call it
2.2.16-4.lfs) upgrade as a series of PKZIPs of Red Hat packages.
Included with the upgrade was a new, Adaptec RAID (aacraid) driver put
under the GNU License as part of the /usr/src/linux tree. Personally,
however, I have not had much luck upgrading. Our system has randomly
crashed at least five times, sometimes not even completing the boot
scripts, and sometimes hours later. Some of our more disk reading
intensive programs also have hung in manners which would not let them be
killed. As a result, I went back to the old Dell supplied kernel,
which does not seem to have these issues. I would be curious to know
how others are doing.

The system hangs (our main problem) were normally due to one of our
server's CPUs deciding to lock the bus improperly. This would suggest
to me that either (1) there is a bug in the 2.2.16 SMP code as supplied
by Dell or (2) the aacraid driver as we have it might have some SMP
usage issues. The aacraid driver also on occasion sent out a message
that it was flushing its buffers - I don't quite see that as a problem,
however.

But before I go blaming the new drivers (which were rumored before to
have problems), I would like to see how everyone else is fairing. In
addition, I have a server that can be used as a scapegoat to an extent
should any of the kernel people want to run some tests -- it would be
nice to see the code ported to the 2.4.0-pre series.

As root, try the following:

- 'ls -l /dev/fd0'. Is the first character a b? Is the device readable?

- 'mount /dev/fd0 /mnt' with a linux floppy inserted, or 'mount -t msdos
/dev/fd0 /mnt' with a dos floppy. Does it work?

- Look in /lib/modules/<kernel-version>/block for ide-floppy.o. If it's
there, you have modular floppy support, which may not have loaded yet. Try
'insmod ide-floppy'. Any error messages?

You may have to rebuild your kernel, with IDE floppy support built in.

Good luck,
A.

<sigh> SuSE got me trhough those awkward newbie days, but Debian keeps
looking like a better and better long-term alternative. And Potato's due
any day now...
