Hi

I picked up a SuSE 7.0 LiveEval CD from a book store and am trying to use
it to upgrade my SuSE 6.3... My computer is too old - can't boot from CD.
And failing. No info on the package nor on the CD. Maximum success I was
able to achieve - is to boot with a boot disk with the kernel from the CD
and ro root=/dev/hdc S options (no other runlevel worked), login as root,
mount a floppy as a /tmp / /var/log directory (depending on whether trying
to run yast or yast2) and start yast / yast2. This is it. Can't get either
of them to do anything with my existing installation and the CD - update
or whatever. Anybody any ideas?

Thanks

Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 01:02:03 +0100

Hello,

Eventually I have a working machine with Linux (RedHat 5.2 distribution,
because a friend of my gave it to me on cd-rom). It's a 486 Compaq 66m, no
cd-rom (I used ftp-installation) 12mb memory and a 212 Mb linux partition
(the other part is for swap and some vague compaq boot stuff).

I installed two ethernet cards. Standard, the eth0 is working. The eth1 is
working after using ifconfig.

But what are the next steps to get the thing working as a gateway?
I've read HOW-TO's. When I'm installing the suggested pptp with make.. there
are some warnings...
Even the make menuconfig in the /linux dir doesn''t work... "No rule to make
target"....
I don't get it (yet).

Any suggestions?

Almost certainly your pppd setup. If you can dial and get an answer,
then (usually) the modem (soft in this case) is working. (of course with
soft modems, bugs are a possibility, but then they are for hardware
modems as well.)

Subject: Need Help with glib-1.2.8 install
Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2000 21:05:50 -0500

Hi,
I am trying to install gtk-1.2.8 which I believe means I also need to
install glib-1.2.8. I have downloaded, unzipped and untarred each, and run
./configure in the glib-1.2.8 with no noticable problems. However, when I
run make, it almost immediately aborts while tring to compile gerror.c
saying no memory is allocated to struct timeval tv;. I believe this means
that it does not know where struct timeval is defined.

gerror.c #includes <sys/time.h> only if HAVE_SYS_TIME_H is defined and it
would appear that it is not defined, at least by the time we get to
gerror.c. (struct timeval is defined in bits/time.h which is #included by
sys/time.h, whcih is #included by gerror.c IF HAVE_SYS_TIME_H is defined.

If as an experiment, I just try to compile gerror.c using gcc rather then
the makefile, I get the same error, and if I modify gerror.c to define
HAVE_SYS_TIME_H, then gcc compiles gerror.c just find, but if I go back to
make, although I get by that error, I only encounter other errors for other
things not defined a little farther.

-So- the problem must be that somthing else is not right that has to happen
first, before I run the make file so that all the #defines are defined
correctly.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong, or what I should try next would be
appreciated.

Thanks

I agree that this most likely locks up the hardware.

I have been trying to use a manual KVM switch that was supposedly designed
for PS2 mouse and kybd. As you might expect, it locks up the the PC that
has been unselected. Generally, the keyboard and dislpay still works, but
the mouse is always locked up. The odd thing is that one of the PC's on the
KVM is using a PS2 to Serial adaptor, and it locks up as often as the PC's
witch are using the PS2 port.

It seems to me we should be able to emulate the mouse presence at the PC by
adding a resistor or two. If I could get my hands on a schematic of the PS2
ports, it would help. Certainly someone has circumvented this problem and
could save us some strokes.

Hey Rod, thks for the quickie reply....
How about if i install RH7 in a separate HD? You think this will simplify
everything? You see im planning to add another physical HD, probably a 15 or
20 gig drive. I think this approach will not complicate stuffs.

Is it possible to have a triple boot machine? Can LILO handle this? Thnks

Here's what I get with lsmod:

Is this what I should see, or is there something else? Obviously, the aha152x

Subject: major problem with suse 6.3

hello,

I never thought Linux could damage other partitions but I guess it can,
not physically though.

Both of my hard drives are on an HPT366 controller. I only have a cdrom
and dvd on my IDE controllers, those drives are hda and hdb
respectively. My Windows drive is the master on HTP366 controller and
its hde and my linux drive is the slave being hdf. Boot partition is
hdf1 and root is hdf3.

The first problem i ran into was that I couldn't use all of my 15 gigs
for Linux. I could only partition the first 1027 cylinders which came
out to be 8 gigs even though before partitioning for Linux the
installation program was able to see the whole partition that I had of
Windows. The cylinders still weren't correct though for that partition.
But I figured I'll just use fdisk later on to assign the last 7 gigs to
a partition.

I tried to put LILO on the MBR but since no hard drive existed there (my
cdrom is hda) I couldn't do that so I chose the MBR of the boot
partition which ended up not working. Later I changed the boot= variable
in lilo.conf to be /dev/hde1 so that I got a LILO prompt when I booted.
This worked and I could get into Linux.

But I could not get into WIndows. I type in Win to get into Windows and
all I get in return is this:

Loading windows...
LI

and that's it. I have no clue why. I added the linear option to
lilo.conf and put 'compact' in but neither helped. I tried fdisk /mbr
from a dos bootdisk which had no affect (maybe b/c I had no MBR on
/dev/hda). Luckily I could do lilo -u and that got me back to loading
Windows.

However when I load Windows I get illegal ops with explorer.exe about 3
times and a few other programs and within seconds the whole system is
frozen, every time I boot. Using a DOS bootdisk and typing 'win' at the
prompt I get 'system registry' not found and vfat errors. (i've since
reinstalled windows and so far things seem to be ok regarding that but i
can't boot into it while using LILO and im even afraid to do that now
considering what just happened with my windows partition messing up
somehow)

So can anyone tell me what might be wrong?
Also, I noticed when Linux boots that it can't mount my Windows
partition. it says wrong fs type, bad superblock or too many filesystems
mounted already and therefore i cant mount automatically or manually my
windows partition, probably for the same reason I can't boot from it
either using LILO, even though regular booting w/o LILO works fine from
the UDMA66 controller.

any ideas are appreciated.

Most of the current distros won't install with less than 16mb of ram.
The main linux desktops, gnome and kde need 32mb. The box you have would
be fine for a gateway/firewall box or a console based linux box.
Upgrading is always a tradeoff, with a new motherboard you'll find you
will need to replace just about everything else as well, a new case
because the board is ATX form factor not AT, new memory because it needs
DIMMs not SIMM, new cards because it PCI based not ISA, a new CPU etc,
etc...
