Sound cards usually use IRQ 5 as default. isapnp.conf is created by
saving the output of the pnpdump command. with an internal modem, you
could also have a conflict between your onboard serial ports and the
modem. ttyS1 is defaults to IRQ 3 ( COM2 in DOS speak ) which also be
what the on board serial is trying to use.

The correct module is the ne2k module. run the lspci command and see if
it list your NIC. Also when you boot the system , the BIOS usually list
the PCI resources found, again check for the NIC. It's possible you have
an IRQ conflict, usually this an AGP or PCI video card that neeeds an
IRQ.

Not a lilo issue, kernel currently only takes 2GB of memory max

After you change an environment variable like path, export it to make
the new value available.
#export PATH
This is only good for the current session, edit your .profile to make it
stick.

Yes, that is normal. What desktop are you using ? gnome has a menu

Subject: modprobe complaining about serial devices at boot
I just got finished building a new kernel 2.2.16. Upon booting it I got
all kinds of messages about "undefined symbols" in modules. Ofcourse,
those modules weren't included in this kernel.
Ok, I remove /lib/modules/2.2.16 and rerun "make modules_install" to
only have the modules I include in this build.
Now on boot I get a bunch of the following messages:
modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-4
/dev/ttyS31: No such device
The ttyS19 to ttyS31 are listed on the screen, all before have scrolled
off of the screen to fast to read.
What have I done wrong?

Subject: Installing SuSe 7.0 from CD fails with "no hard disk found"
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 04:37:57 GMT
I am trying to install the SuSe 7.0 evaluation CD on my new machine, and the
CD boots, and Yast2 starts but it immediately puts up a message box saying
that "no hard disk was found". This surprises me because the machine does
indeed have a hard disk, and runs Win2K very well from that disk.
The disk in question is a 30GB IBM Deskstar. It is connected to a Promise
100 IDE controller. My MB is an ASUS A7V. It has two pairs of hard disk
connectors, one pair (primary) for UDMA 100/66 (80 conductor cable), and
one pair (secondary) for intended non-UDMA IDE devices. The hard disk
(which supports UDMA 100) is connected as master to the primary IDE
connecter. My CD-RW drive is connected as master to the secondary IDE
connecter.
The BIOS sees the CD-RW drive as a master IDE device, and the hard disk
as a UDMA device (i.e. it is not listed in the set of IDE devices, but it
is identified later as a UDMA device). I'm not sure what all this means,
except that I could imagine that Linux asks the BIOS about the connected
IDE devices and gets the list (containing only the CD-RW drive) and
concludes that there is no hard disk present.
The BIOS CMOS is set up for a "Plug'nPlay" OS.
Can anyone help me to get SuSe Linux to install on this machine?
A further question would be, will Yast2 and Linux cope correctly with
the very large disk (it has on it at present a 4GB NTFS, a 2GB Fat32, and
10GB NTFS, the remainder free space some of which is to be used by Linux.)
TIA, Parzival

Anyone want to tell me why when I give Linux the same settings as I gave
it last time for my modem in conjunction with the setserial command
Linux doesn't see my modem this time even though last time it worked
first try?
I got my modem to use COM3 now instead of COM5 and its irq is 12 and it
uses port 0xa000. I give setserial those parameters to any and all com
ports and i get no response from them. Why the hell shouldn't I get a
response from COm3?
anyone want to shed some light on this subject which should have been
fixed 30 minutes ago when I first started working on it?

I already have:
# ls -log /usr/lib/libc.so.5
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root 14 Dec 7 17:57 /usr/lib/libc.so.5 -> libc.so.5.4.46
# ls -log /usr/lib/libc.so.5.4.46
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root 1839459 Dec 7 17:56 /usr/lib/libc.so.5.4.46
also:
# pwd
/usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib
# ls -l libc.so*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root 14 Jan 27 1999 libc.so.5 -> libc.so.5.3.12
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 699832 Apr 15 1999 libc.so.5.3.12
so I linked the /usr/lib/libc.so.5 to the
/usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libc.so.5.3.12, to see if the older version
was required, ran wingz, still got a core dump....
willing to try most anything...

Subject: install from a partition.
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 05:09:09 GMT
Hi,
I am attempting to install Red Hat 7.2 from FAT partition on an NT box.
The files were downloaded to the D:\RedHat directory. I want to
actually overwrite the NT so there are no space problems.
My problem is that when I boot with the Linux boot disk and type in the
location of the RedHat directory, I get a message saying that the files
can't be found. I've double-checked everything; could the fact that
they are in a DOS partition be preventing the Linux boot disk from
finding them? If not that, I'm stumped and the Red Hat installation
guide has very little to say about partition-based installs.
Please let me know,
Mike Cooper

Try again with a source tarball from qmail.org or one of its mirrors

can you ping other IP addresses from your other user accounts?
Is so then try to ping a domain name. if you cannot ping domain names then I
suggest you use root to add DNS server IP addresses to your /etc/resolv.conf
That may be the answer to your problems:- lack of name resolution

Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 05:34:08 GMT
I currently cannot boot Windows 98 SE from BootMagic. My system
previously had Windows 98 SE on the first partition as FAT32, then the
second partition has W2K Pro on NTFS, SO I just used the Windows Boot
menu.
Now I just installed Linux Mandrake 7.2 on the third partition (hde6),
swap on the fourth partition (hde7). I installed Mandrake just fine
and put LILO on the linux partition. Then I installed BootMagic
through W2K Pro and now I can boot into Linux. I then tested my
booting and I can also boot in W2K Pro from the bootmagic menu. BUT
WHEN I TRY TO BOOT INTO windows 98 SE it says it cannot find a system.
If I boot using the W2K bootmenu I can get into Win 98 SE.
I know that W2K gets a copy of the MBR and saves it to a file so that
during the bootmenu you can boot into Win 98 by loading that file that
had the old boot sector. I want to boot into 98 using one menu and
not going through 2 of them.
Can someone help me?
