When you install VMware on whatever platform, you basically generate a
completely new machine. It doesn't use any of the host resources on the
disk. It'll use its own swap areas. I've installed VMware for both windows
and linux on several machines and it doesn't require extra swap areas in
the host's filesystem.

First off, check on the compatibility of these models with Linux. The
site http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi has a searchable
database, but it seems to be down at the moment, so I can't check
myself.

If your printers are supported, you can create a Linux printer queue
that feeds the data through Ghostscript. You can then share the printer
as if it were a PostScript model, using PostScript drivers on Windows.
I don't have much experience with Magic Filter, so I can't offer
specific advice on configuring it. Chances are you just need to know
what Ghostscript driver to use, then follow the program's
documentation.

If your printers are NOT supported in Linux, or if you want to use their
native drivers in Windows, you can share the printers "raw" -- WITHOUT
using Magic Filter. Set up the print queue without an "if=" line.

Setting up a Samba printer share is another matter. In either case, the
easiest solution is probably to create a [printers] share, which shares
all your printers. Something like this might be all you need:

[printers]
        path = /var/spool/samba
        print ok = Yes
        browseable = No

If you share both models as PostScript devices, you might want to add
the "postscript = Yes" parameter. There are many other Samba options
that relate to printing. For more information, consult the Samba
documentation or a book on Samba. (I list several, including one by me,
at http://www.rodsbooks.com/books/books-samba.html.)

It is Linux Red Hat 6.2, kernel 2.2.16.

Subject: How to configure a NIC in RH6.2??
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 16:19:51 GMT

I just installed RH6.2 after a disk crash that destroyed my previous
RH5.2 installation. This is not the first time I have installed RH6.2
but it was a while ago....
Now I have this problem:
I have 2 NIC:s in the PC and I must now configure the IP addresses of
them. There was no dialogue in the setup sequence where I could do
that so it has to be done manually.
In earlier situations I think I remember I used the command netcfg to
bring up a program screen where I could configure these details.
But on this system when I type netcfg in a command window in KDE
nothing happens, or really a sequence of error messages pop up ending
with 'No such file or directory'

The total message is approximately (has to write it from memory...):
'File /usr/lib/rhs/netcfg/netcfg.py, line 23, in ?
>From Tkinter import *
File /usr/lib/python1.5/lib-tk/Tkinter.py, line 8, in ?
import _tkinter # If this fails your Python may not be configured for
Tk'

What is Python and what is Tk?????

What to do now???

PS: During bootup the two cards are shown as eth0 and eth1
respectively, so they seem to be on teh system...

After messing with Windooze for years, want to get up to speed on 'nix.
Picked up a book about installing and configuring RH that has a CD distrib
of RH 6.0. Have an older machine i wanted to put it on but when I look up
the compatibilities, looks like I'm out. Box has a "WinModem" (generic v.90
Windows modem) and the video adapter is on-board, "AGP." Looks like I could
just have Linux in text mode without a modem. If I replace the modem, would
adding a video accel type card allow me to use XFree?

Nikola,

You dont need to install anything.
You have perl, and you just want to
get rid of an annoying error message
due to some lack of configuration information.

Try doing the following at the command prompt

export LC_ALL=C

and now run perl and see if the errors continue.

Like I said before, you might want to read the perllocale man page.

Good luck

Subject: how to "move" LILO to extended partition ?
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 16:23:59 GMT

during RH 7.0 install I picked "install LILO to MBR" instead of
"install LILO to extended partition". I regret.

what command, if possible, should I use to re-install LILO from my Linux
prompt to "move" it from MBR to Extended partition ?
My OSBS (http://www.prz.tu-berlin.de/~wolf/os-bs.html) thing can't
"jump" to the MBR and let LILO take over. So I was thinking if I
put LILO on the extended partition boot sector then I can make OSBS
"jump" to it and LILO should then take over.

I've read instructions on using LILO commands including the "-r"
option but I haven't found anything that tells me how to install
LILO to a different boot sector(in this case the boot sector of
the extended partition where I installed RH 7.0).

Thank you.

Subject: CD-RW Trouble...
Crossposted-To: alt.linux
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 16:36:55 GMT

I'm having trouble with sporadic error messages from my new
CD-RW.

I've had it about a week now and in that period have only been
able to burn 4 discs despite many attempts. The failed burns
gave me an error message that I have enclosed at the end of this
post.

The drive is an Actima ARW8432 (8x/4x/32x) that is reported to
be a 'CD-R/RW RW7080A' at boot time and by cdrecord (CdWrite does
not support this drive). It's an ATAPI drive that I'm running in
SCSI emulation mode. I have no trouble reading from the drive.

As an aside, I tried sticking the drive in an AMD K6 500mhz
Win98 box and also had no luck there. When I would try to burn
with Nero Cd Burner, Win98 would fold like a house of cards. The
repeated failure on both boxes/OS's leads me to believe the drive
is bad but I don't want to bring it back unless I'm certain I'm
not the cause of the problem. :-)

  Any info would be appreciated.

p.s. I tried swapping out 'dev=/dev/sg1' with 'dev=0,1,0' (the
proper designation for my CD-RW) with no change.

Hi.

I'm having problems installing Linux Mandrake 7.2.
My system is configured as follows:

        8.4GB Primary Master (hda)
        CD-RW Primary Slave (hdb)
        6.4GB Secondary Master (hdc)
        DVD-ROM Secondary Slave (hdd)

        /dev/hda2 =3D SCO Unixware
        /dev/hda3 =3D <currently spare>
        /dev/hda4 =3D BeOS

        /dev/hdc1 =3D Linux (/)
        /dev/hdc4 =3D Extended partition containing:
        /dev/hdc5 =3D Linux (/home)

        /dev/hdc7 =3D Linux (/tmp)
        /dev/hdc8 =3D Linux (/usr)
        /dev/hdc9 =3D Linux (/usr/local)
        /dev/hdc10 =3D Linux (/var)
        /dev/hdc11 =3D Linux Swap

I'm currently running Mandrake 7.0 which installed without any problems.=
=20
I intend to do a reinstall of the major partitions (saving /home,=20
/usr/local and /opt). I can boot off the CD, but when it starts to load =

the kernel, it identifies the devices okay (noting that both hard disks =

are DMA33) but then freezes at the following:

        Partition check:
        hda: hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4
        hdc:

The machine then locks up.

Any ideas anyone? I've tried turning off DMA for the secondary controlle=
r=20
in the BIOS without any luck. Are there any parameters that I can pass a=
t=20
the LILO prompt? I'm a bit bemused because 7.0 was fine on the same=20
hardware.

Any help appreciated.

Sounds like an installation or configuration error. Look for
a RPM on the distribution CD called pytk, pythonlib, or similar.
Alternatively, uninstall and re-install netcfg and see what
RPM packages it depends on.

Uh, well, thanks anyway. Of those, only "man setup" exists on my system, and
that only tells me about some kernel function call. What should it be telling

Thanks. I've *read* all of that. Can you give me some better idea of what I'm
missing?

The scripts *exist* in /sbin/init.d and are symlinked into /etc/rc.d/rc3.d. The
SUSE system *created* the scripts and linked them there itself. I didn't touch
them.

The scripts run *fine*, without error. They just don't run at startup, or else
the services don't start for some other reason. But they don't seem to generate
any errors or error logs.

Eric,

I ran into the same problem today. Here's what I did to fix it:

1. ftp.slackware.com
2. downloaded rpm-4.0-4.i386.rpm (/pub/linux/redhat/...)
3. ran 'rpm2tgz' util on rpm archive
4. used pkgtool to deinstall rpm 3.0.2
5. used pkgtool to install rpm 4.0.4
6. cd to directory where kdeadmin will build
7. $ make clean
8. $ rm config.cache
9. $ make

I had to do a make clean and reconfigure because the build could not
find the new rpm 4.0.2 libraries.

Use the installation boot disk to boot the system and follow through
the install up to the partitioning section. Delete all linux partitions
and then choose the "Back" button and save the changes when asked. Then
reboot the system with a windows boot disk and do a:

fdisk /MBR

You will have to format the disk/partition back to the win/DOS format.
