I know that using

pwconv

you transfer passwords from /etc/passwd to /etc/shadow

and using

pwunconv

you transfer passwords from /etc/shadow to /etc/passwd

I'm assuming that you are using the -p argument?
as stated in the useradd(8) man page:
       -p passwd
The encrypted password, as returned by crypt(3).
The default is to disable the account.

which (to me) means that you have to call crypt yourself, and send useradd
the encrypted password, and not the plain text version. I'm not sure how to
do this (aside from writing a perl script, or C program). crypt(3) is a
definition of the crypt function for use in C programs. What I would do is
create the user with 'useradd', without the -p switch, then just run 'passwd
user' to set his/her password after. AFAIK, this 2-step procedure is what
most people do (I just use RH's User Manager).

Look at your /etc/modules.conf file and see if scsi is aliased to aic7xxx.
Change it if it is.

With 1.5 GB of ram I don't think you'll be swapping to the HDD much. For
reference, our mail/masquerading/firewall/samba server, 150+ users, only has
128 MB swap and as far as we're concenred it's overkill...

If you do think you want those, you would be best having smaller swaps across
serveral drives...

Hi. I am setting up my Redhat 7.1 machine, and I downloaded the apache

"/usr/local/apache/bin/httpd: error while loading shared libraries:
libgdbm.so.1: cannot load shared object file: No such file or directory".
Where can I get libgdbm.so.1? Redhat only comes with libgdbm.so.2. Or how
can I get apache to use this latter file? Thanks in advance.

When hda has a single partition I do not think that Windows can have
damaged data on hdb in this case. You however still should note the
rules for partition tables mentioned in my first posting.

I have no other ideas about the cause of the problem.

I think it's a matter of resizing that swap partition to your liking. Use

Apache seems to be compiled to use libgdbm.so.1.

ldd /path_to/httpd | grep libgdbm

should show. Anyway, why to want to run such an old apache?
1.3.19 is the latest, there were some security problems with earlier
versions...

I can't believe RH 7.1 would not come with a newer apache?

I think it's heavily dependent on who the local @Home franchise is run by.
I use Cox@Home in San Diego, and it's given me no problems with Linux.
You can use DHCP with them but they recommend against it, and for non-Windows
OSes everything you need is on a printed sheet they give you when they
install and sync up the cable modem ( external, Ethernet, includes a
crossover cable ) ( Windows users get it as well, but most of them use
the software on the CD and so don't care about it ). Speed's good, usually
around 2.5-3 megabits down and anywhere from 20-200 K/sec up depending
on time of day.

sorry, but you can install linux first and win98 later. When you install

I have done it with dd if=/dev/hda11 of=/tmp/liloboot.bin bs=512

After copying it to my c:\ directory (w2k root), and updating the

Subject: SuSE 7.1/Apple Mac/La Cie HD
Date: Fri, 25 May 2001 23:26:00 GMT

I bought a couple of SCSI-narrow hard disks for older Apple Power Mac 7500
machines.

SuSE 7.1 installs and runs just fine on them.

One problem: LaCie sells 9gb and 18gb SCSI drives in their Mac department.

Two 9gb drives installed SuSE 7.1 just fine. The one 18gb did not. It
would never finish the "creating file system" step in YAST. A hard disk
test with Apple's drive setup showed no problems, but after several tries
with SuSE, I gave up.

I did notice that the LaCie drivers on the 9gb models were not updated by
Apple's 9.1 installer. Maybe this was good.

The drivers on the 18gb were updated by Apple's 9.1 installer and this
disk wouldn't complete the SuSE installation.

Anyone have problems with the 18gb drives? Unless I hear positive comments
from others, I'm going to stick with the 9gb SCSI drives for now.

Any other experiences with LaCie drives? With 9.1 updating the drivers
before the SuSE install?

Thanks.

Hello. See if you can find the package 'kgcc' on your RedHat CDROM and
install it. When you cd into /usr/src/linux edit the Makefile like this:

#
# Include the make variables (CC, etc...)
#

CC = $(CROSS_COMPILE)kgcc <-----this used to read gcc

This way you'll be using the c compiler the kernel was intended to be
compiled with. Good luck!

You could also make an adjustment in linuxconf. Go to user accounts and

I have tried many different configurations of the firewall to no avail.

Any help or advice will be much appreciated.

I checked out the manpage for pwconv, and it said something it would
synchronize passwd/shadow regarding entries. It didn't talk about
converting passwords which would be rather interesting since the passwords
are encrypted in a one-way fashion.
