Chris,
192.168.0.8 is the ip address of the RedHat server.
My Win2K laptop is 192.168.0.33 and my telnet and ftp connections use ip
address. So no DNS is involved unless RedHat does a inverse DNS lookup.

Subject: sawfish theme install
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 17:51:43 -0800
Hi there,
I'm having quite a trying time installing a simple theme into Sawfish
(on Gnome- Mandrake). Basically, I've downloaded a .tar.gz file, and
copied it into /usr/share/sawfish/themes, and removed the numbers from
the filename.
Nevertheless, when I go to Gnomes Control Center, I can only find
"default" listed. And when I try to add another using the "Install new
theme" and select my tar.gz file, it does absolutely nothing!
I can't figure out whether or not I'm correct in using Gnomes Control
Center to select the theme??
If anyone could offer some assistance with the problem, I'd be most
grateful!!
Thank you!

Hi,
I think there is a special program to copy the base system onto a FAT
partition in raw format - you can't just copy them across. Have a look
around for a program called rawrite methinks....I know that is what you
have to do with floppies on DOS so it should be similar....

Subject: rh 6.2 install - kernel panic

I'm trying to install red hat 6.2 on an old 486.
I installed a trinity works overdrive cpu based
on the AMD 5x86 chip. The board speed is 33 and
the cpu speed is 133. The cd-rom is non-bootable
so I need to use boot disks. However, I can't
even get the installation started because so
after the boot process starts on the boot disk I
receive the following message:
-CPU: AMD Am5x86-WT stepping 04
-Kernel panic: Kernel compiled for Pentium+,
requires TSC
-In swapper task - not syncing
I don't know what this means. If anyone has any
ideas I would be very appreciative. Thanks.

No two devices have the same IRQ. The scsi adapator is not detected at boot.
On my system, there is nothing in /proc/scsi. Does this mean there is some scsi
module which is not loaded? I appreciate your advice.

What ISP are you choosing? There are only two choices, "AT&T Global Net",

What kind of modem do you have (brand and model number)? Is the modem

i dont use a ps2 mouse but i take it the irq could still be used by the
ps2 port?
I dont think there are jumpers on the modem to do that. I havent had to
configure the modem that way to change its settings. A program that gets
put into the Control Panel in Windows came with it that lets me choose
what COM port the modem uses. It was on COM5 and I changed it to Com3.
WHen I orginally had Linux on this computer the modem used irq 9 and i
had no trouble using it after i configured it in linux using setserial
but it isnt that easy this time. The only thing i can think of is what
u suggested which never crossed my mind that the ps2 mouse was using the
same irq, or could be. I use a serial mouse so i dont know if the irq
for the ps2 port still comes into play or not.
i'll look into it in the meantime.

Subject: Problem with SiS630 (integrated) sound card
Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 12:36:00 +0800
Hello,
I have posted question asking about the setting of X windows with my
SiS630 based notebook. Now I am tackling with the sound card.
Following the instruction at
http://www.in.tum.de/~clemens/ipc-topnote-h.html, I have made the X
worked. But I also followed the instruction on setting up sound and failed.
If I compile the "(Trident) SiS 7018 PCI Audio" into the kernel
(2.2.18, Red Hat 7), then the booting will report that Trident is found
but it can't allocate irq 0. How could I specify the irq when the sound
support is compiled into kernel? I tired to specify it as "options
trident irq=11 io=0x310" in /etc/modules.conf, but it doesn't work.
If I make the "(Trident) SiS 7018 PCI Audio" support as module, then
itwon't be loaded automatically, even adding the line |alias
char-major-14 trident" to /etc/modules.conf. And "modprobe trident"
will load it as unused, where /dev/dsp and /dev/sndstat still can't be "cat"
Thanks for your attention!
Yours,
Raymond

You can install the python rpm from the RH 6.2 disk. The rpms are located
under the redhat/RPMS directory. Simply find the rpm's you want to install
and then (as root) type rpm -Uvh [rpm name]. I don't have my 6.2 disk
handy, but it should work something like:
mount /dev/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom/redhat/RPMS <- probably wrong!
dir python*
......
su -c "rpm -Uvh python......"
su -c "rpm -Uvh Kt....."
I'm hoping that the Kt library is named something like that, or it may be
inside another package. It's harder to locate if it's inside another
package - the best way is to look at the 6.2 manual in the section that
describes all the packages. You could also try grep'ing the RPMS directory
for Kt, but you could get a lot of hits.

Subject: New Mandrake installation hangs on booting
Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 16:10:26 +1030
I am taking my first look at Linux. Using the CDs from The Linux Pocketbook
3rd Edition, but I have a problem booting it.
I installed Mandrake Linux 7.2 on top of my Win98 2nd Edition (FAT32). First
I ran Windows Defrag. I tried to split the partition using FIPS but it kept
telling me the last cylinder was not empty. I ran Defrag again, then FIPS,
with the same result.
I then used the Mandrake install CDs and opted to install Linux in a Windows
directory (have I understood correctly what it was doing?) because FIPS
couldn't split the Windows partition.
Now when I reboot the machine, I get the GRUB bootloader first. Selecting
Windows runs Win98 OK with no problems so far as I can see. However, if I
select Linux or Failsafe it hangs halfway through the system checks etc.
when screeds of console text fill the screen.
The last line displayed when it hangs is:
Code: f2 ae f7 d1 49 89 cb 39 f3 7c 21 89 f6 83 c4 fc 56 55 46 8b
The cursor is on the screen flashing under this line but everything is
locked up. The hdd light is not on and there is no response to mouse or
keyboard, not even Ctrl-Alt-Del. The only way out is the Reset button.
Other significant-looking lines on the screen when it hangs are:
SIS5513: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
and:
Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address c4000000
Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The problem I'm having is that with my current monitor limitation of

get to the buttons on the bottom of the screen because the screens are so

page left and right to find the button to click on. I'm sure that there has
to be a way to change this, right?
