Hi,

I had a mistake with my pcmcia card.
This card is present on the liste of the supported cards ( d-link
DFE-650 )
Cables are ok ( it run under windows )
Pcmcia module find the card with an irq=3 ( idem windows )
But i can't ping any machine of my lan !
Dmesg :
eth0: lost link beat
eth0: Tx timed out, cable problem? TSR=0x42, ISR=0x0, t=935.

Is anybody knows what appened to my computer ?

Thanks about !

Oh...and if you are wondering...the performance of the Win98 VM in absolute
terms is completely usable. It is slightly slower than native Win98, but not
by much or enough to bother me. Being able to use Linux AT THE SAME TIME
more than compensates for the very slight loss in "snappines"...and it *is*
slight.

I'm afraid to say that it's not going to happen. There is no fool-proof
guide on how to install Linux. However, if there is one distribution I
certainly recommend for anyone looking for a "windows-like" experience
(minus the blue-screens) is Linux Mandrake. Make sure to grab a copy of
Mandrake 7.2 because it includes KDE2 and some other goodies that'll make
your life a whole lot easier.

Yeah, even with the SBlive and the commercial OSS drivers, I noticed that
last time due to some kernel recompilation confusion that the initial mixer
settings were much too low. I could not hear sounds using xmms but when I
started something like Xmixer or whatever it is, the default controls for
"main" were down real low. I boosted the mixing controls a bit and all is
fine. This is on debian 2.2 potato with a dash of woody :)

Subject: Need help getting Toshiba Laptop on Network/Internet
Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2001 09:15:50 -0600

My Setup: Home network with Win98 desktop acting as server using Internet
Connection Sharing to access cable modem (cox-internet.com ISP). Toshiba
Laptop dual booting as Win 98/ Linux-mandrake 7.0. The laptop is using a
Linksys Combo PCMCIA Ethernet Card.

I am trying to access internet on laptop. If I boot to Win98 I have no
problems getting on the net but If I boot to Linux something is wrong. If I
click on a link I can see the cable modem send/rec lights so I know it is
going across the home network. On the bottom of Netscape I even get
"Connect: host www.kde.org contacted. Waiting for reply" and that is as far
as it goes. If I click Updates on the desktop it just errors out trying to
get a list of servers. I can ping my ISP but no other web sites:
Some things I have noticed:

During boot up I get the following error messages:
Bringing Up Interface eth0 Delaying eth0 Initialization Failed
Starting http
Failed

During Shutdown:
Stopping pcmcia ... (Long error message the goes by to fast to copy)

Running Dmesg from a terminal window I see the following line:
eth0: NE2000 Compatible: io 0x300, irq 3, hw_addr 00:E0:98:73:F4:18
NO second line showing driver.

Can someone tell we where I am going wrong???

What about the Win98SE native installation ? Can you boot that too from
within VMWare ? If not, how do you share files between the native
installation and the VM ? I have heard there is something like a special
hardware-profile for this purpose. Just being curious... want to setup
VMWare too.

You can find what you seek. Try searching for "laptops refurbs" and
I think you will find some very
good deals. I got a couple of IBM 700
series laptops with no OS's for a
few hundred dollars each.

One word of advice. Be sure to get
one with an internal CDROM. It is a
lot of extra effort to have to figure out
how to do an install from, for example,
an external CDROM connected by
pcmcia or parallel port.

Hope this helps, dave

=========================================================================

In Machine A, I tried as following:

Changing password for user user123
Empty password.

(and I can login this user without a password.)

=========================================================================

In Machine B, I got something different as following:

>passwd -d user123

Changing password for user user123
No Password set.

(and I CAN'T login with this user without a password.)

Why this happened? The two machines are have same linux version and same

recreate again, but problem still exists.
Thanks for any helps!

I have a 3cp5610, OEM 2976 model. It works fine under both 2.0.34 and 2.0.36

It keeps coming up with an error.
I think it something to do with the cylinders because it's more than 1024.

How do I get around this?

Resource conflict, most likely.

This is an excessively stupid advice. Unless the poster supplies us
with a lot of additional information supporting the fact that the card
might be broken, you're wasting his time and money that way.

I've been using RTL8029-based cards for years now. Granted, they are
el-cheapo cards with a seriously broken design (as far as throughput
and stability are concerened) but they're definitely working in a
standard network environment.

None that couldn't be solved by finetuning installation parameters.

Given the fact that especially the 3c5** cards are particularly
tricky to get running in Linux (just goto
http://www.deja.com/home_ps.shtml for details), this is moot
(to say the very least).

You need to disconnect your drive from the ATA100 controller
and plug it into the ATA33/66 IDE controller instead. The standard
kernels don't support the Promise ATA100 chipset yet (which, by the
way, is broken by design, as it doesn't allow for IRQ sharing at all).
You may the patch the kernel with support for it after having
installed Linux successfully (I wouldn't do it, though, as there's
hardly any noticeable gain in using ATA100 at this time).
