I've got a P4 and boots perfectly with 2.2.18 (SuSE 7.1). Don't know if
they patched it or whatever, but I've upgraded to 2.4.4 only a couple of
weeks ago.

I'm trying to add nVIDIA GeForce 3D/OpenGL support to my SuSE 7.1 system
with (custom) kernel 2.4.4. When I downloaded the kernel driver sources
and followed the instructions to compile it, all I got was that my
kernel does not support cloning. I understand that's got to do with the
presence (or lack) of /proc/config.gz - but how the hell do I enable
this kind of support? I couldn't find anything in the whole source tree
about this entry in /proc, and I'm out of ideas.
Thanks in advance
Eugenio
P.S. No, I did not try to gzip .config and copy it in /proc :))

I had trouble make lynx using a proxy, and no matter what file in my
home directory I tried to configure a proxy in, lynx would accept it
(ignored it). The only file I had success with was /etc/lynx.cfg.

Installing Java on RH 7.1 requires some effort from you, due to some
annoying
bugs found in jdk 1.3.0_02 (I think).
1)
Install jdk (from sun) with:
rpm -iv j2sdk-1_3_0_02-linux.rpm
2a)
Then add these entries into your .bash_profile:
PATH=$PATH:/usr/java/jdk1.3.0_02/bin
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
2b)
Export the new variables:
Append "PATH" and "LD_ASSUME_KERNEL" (without quotes) to the line that
starts with EXPORT.
If you can not find this line, write this at the end of .bash_profile:
EXPORT PATH LD_ASSUME_KERNEL
3)
Then create a symbolic link with the command from a shell:
ln -s /bin/cut /usr/bin/cut
This should do the work and java should now work properly.
Good luck!

you might want to check /etc/modules.conf to see if there's any

This is a link error, so it "compiled" (to be pedantic). You are
missing a library. Since this is the kernel, you are missing something
else that did not compile (there are no external libraries). There
should have been an earlier message, at least warning about this
symbol.
"ip_irc_lock" does not appear in any of my source files for kernel
2.4.3, so ...

What makes sense to you is not necessarily what makes sense to me, and
I have no way of knowing if you normally make sense or not, or if you
are making sense here, or if what you believe is sense really is ...
> )I compile it on the RH7.0 PC

.. no you didn't. Whatever you think you did, it wasn't that, as the
2.4.3 sources do not contain the symbol that you say you compiled
into your network.o. I suspect you have messed up or mixed up your
archives, or untarred one over another, or something.
I can't find your symbol in 2.2.18 sources either. I do see
"__ip_masq_lock". The 2.4.3 sources contain "ip_fw_lock" and
"ip_nat_lock" and "ip_ftp_lock" so the symbol name looks reasonable.
I would guess that your code has been patched. Is that it?

First you need to check to make sure that the packages are installed. A
simple test is to do the following:
rpm -qa | grep telnet-server
rpm -qa | grep wuftpd
rpm -qa | grep sendmail
If you have checked all of this and they all return packages then you have the
correct packages installed. The next thing is to check the files:
/etc/xinetd.d/telnet
/etc/xinetd.d/wu-ftpd
/etc/xinetd.d/sendmail
and check to make sure that they don't have the line: "disable=yes" in them.
If they do, you need to remove the line or change the line to read something
like: "disable=no". You can then issue the command: /etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd
restart.
This should restart your services.
You might want to take a look in /var/log/messages to see whether or not
xinetd logged what services were started when it restarted.
See ya

I had exactly the same problem until I realized that *both* the boot
floppy *and* the installation CD that I had made had to remain in their
respective drives during reboot. Owing, I suppose, to the bizarre way my
mind warps simple logic, I assumed for some strange reason that because my
laptop can't boot from a CD and thus didn't boot from the Linux
installation CD I had inserted, I had to take it out before inserting the
installation floppy and trying to reboot from that (I don't think I got
that idea from reading Corel's instructions). It did reboot from the
floppy, but then, exactly as you described, there was the
message "Starting Corel Linux..." and nothing else happened for the
longest time; no Windows-like "drive D: is not available" or anything like
that. From reading the various replies to your post, it occurred to me to
keep the CD in there the next time, and voil, it worked: the installation
proceded from the floppy to the CD, and Corel Linux ended up installing
perfectly on my laptop.

Look, to be honest, I built the system Friday and only installed Linux
saturday.
Initially, the system was loaded with Windows 95 (GRRRR) so as to play
with overclocking!!! Windows is good for some things! The machine would
not boot Windows reliably over 1.2Ghz, sometimes at 1.3Ghz, but rarely.
In desperation, I gave up overclocking and went on the Load Linux etc.
This was never intended to be a Windows box.
Anyway, it is now running at 1.5Ghz (10x150) running genome@home the CPU
is around 39c.
As of yet I can;t say I have experienced any problems under Linux, ONLY
WONDOZE, and thats gone now :)
Funny, only today did I find kernel notes regarding the VIA / 2.4
problems. Are the problems real? SHould I stay with the 2.2.16 kernel?

Yes, you can use SAMBA to make the connection. More specifically, you will be
intersted in the "smbmount" and "smbclient" programs. If you take a look back
through the newsgroup you will see a number of posts on how this can be done.

You might have a problem here, because it looks like the Ms-Proxy server seems
to cater more for Windows users that Linux users. Quite a number of people
have reported errors when trying to setup their browsers to use the MS Proxy
Server. So you may run into problems there.
