RoadRunner is actually very easy to setup in Linux, set your nic for DHCP and I
think thats about it (if I remember correctly, used to have it, have SDSL now).
When they say they only support win, and mac that means they won't give you
any help with it, not that it won't work.

My router is almost identical to this (P133 48MB RAM and 2 6GB HD's) and I use
Mandrake 7.2 (no X, its there if I feel the need for it) I have more disk
space because I run Samba/FTP/Apache/PHP/MySQL on the box as well, it serves 6
virtual domains from Apache. I have installed Pmfirewall for firewalling and
for internet connection sharing of my LAN (6 PC's) through my SDSL connection.
I believe just about any of the distros will do what you want on this hardware,
I even had it running with NO HD off of Coyote Linux on a floppy until I
decided to expand its purpose.

You second Windows partition must be a logical drive in an extended
partition unless you want to dual boot two independent Win95
installations.
Since you are crossing the 1024 cyl limit , the extended partition for
your windows should be type 0fh. This extented partition should also
contain your logical drives for linux , since Windows supports only the
existance of one extended partition.

I have been thinking about this.
Because you can boot the VM from a DOS/Win?? floppy, you *could*, in theory, run a
restore of your existing system into the virtual disk from a CD-based backup.
You would want to remove every device-dependent driver you had before you did the
backup. Video would need to be set to VGA-16 colors. Remove any network config and
devices you had.
Once you had completed the restore, you could *try* to do a "sys c:" into the
VM....it might work. Then, once it booted, you owuld have to go through all the
usual "new hardware found" stuff.....
You *might* end up with a system very much like the one you already had been
running......without having to re-install everything.
But I haven't tried it.....and making it 'bottable" within the VM would be unknown
territory....though the VM seems to be true to the behaviour of a real PC......so I
think the chances of success would make it worth trying.
The only issue I would have is that each VM partition seems to be limited to 2GB
within an ext2 linux partition. Btu if you use a whole hard disk or empty partition
(available to linux) I think you can do what you like.

I use cable. I have a static IP from my provider, so as far as Linux is
concerned, you;re just on a LAN....except tis LAN is the Internet.
If the IP is allocated some other way, then there are lots of FAQs around about
how to set this up. Linux can be a DHCP client no problem.
Next, you'll want to know how to share this connection. :-)

Why boot from CD if you don't need a hard disk at all?

Add this line to /etc/conf.modules or modules.conf depending which your
system uses.
alias eth0 3c59x
Then you need to configure the network. If you are running X you can
use "netcfg" without he quotes. Als0 configure /etc/hosts,
/etc/hosts.allow, /etc/hosts.deny
Once that is done just just restart the network.
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart

I set up one of these on a P-166 with 64MB of RAM and a 1.2GB HD last year and
RedHat 6.1.
It had two NICs - one to my LAN hub with a 10.* addresssss and one to my cable
modem.
Many distros don't require you to install X windows.....but i did because it
makes life a lot easier than command-line and text editors......especially when
reconfiguring system options....
Once you have it configured, just put the rc.firewall into rc.local...and it
will start on boot-up...and you can't get a command prompt unless you interrupt
the boot and drop to single-user mode or boot from floppy.

The reason for my problem regarding the blank screen seems to be that
the wrong video mode was selected during RH6.2 setup. There are two
screens for this if you run a complete setup, the second one is for
resolution setup. But the second screen does not show up if you do an
upgrade and the monitor select erroneously says that my monitor can
handle vertical rates of 110 Hz....
I had to reinstall RH from scratch instead of upgrading to see both
screens. Then I manually edited the vertical sync radte for my monitor
to max out at 75Hz and selected 800x600 resolution on the following
screen. This also had a test button that actually displayed something
that I could click.
After this I no longer had these problems (but others popped up
instead....).
BTW: I now want to reset resolution to 1024x768 but there seems not to
be any function to do that. I have looked 'everywhere' in right click
menus and regular list of functions on all buttons I have seen but the
resolution thing is not shown. One would think that this could be
displayed in a properties or settings dialogue somewhere, but I have
yet to find it. It is not in the same place as in W95 at least.
Display properties on the right-click menu is very much like the W95
properties dialogue but lacks the resolution page.
Does anyone know where this is located or is this a one-time setting
during Linux installation?
/Bo

Go to the Linux Documentation Project and look at (download?) the
Hardware HOWTO. It's a little out of date, but then, so's your hardware
;). In the HOWTO, there are links to other sources of information on
hardware compatibility. The site is a goldmine of information; check
out the Installation HOWTO, also.
I can tell you that the winmodems are out, but you can probably get the
rest to work. Good luck. G.
