Sorry, you MUST reformat and reinstall!

What I would do is boot from a floppy linux distro, not from your
rescue disk. IIRC the RH rescue disk loads the kernel from the /boot
dir, which may have been recompiled by now. I use "Tom's RTBT" (RooT
BooT) floppy available from: http://www.toms.net/rb/home.html

Once booted clean, mount your disk(s) with the "-o nosuid noexec nodev"
options and make a system backup if you want it for later forensics.
You can then copy any scripts or data you need. You can count on most
system binaries being trojans by now, so leave them alone. When I got
rooted I did a fresh install of linux then a selective restore of data
areas and my config scripts from backups. Be sure to inspect any
scripts you recover to make sure they've not been altered (even from
backups)!

> We are using RedHat 6.2.

I would strongly recommend using the Bastille linux hardening
scripts available through the homepage bastille-linux.org or
download directly (~200KB) from:
http://download.sourceforge.net/bastille-linux/Bastille-1.1.1.tgz
The Bastille scripts will activate most of the operating system's
built in security features very effectively. Setup is pretty easy,
with lots of onscreen info about each option.
And version 1.1.1 is optimized for RedHat v6.2!
After you apply the scripts be sure you read the log files often.

Hope this helps!

My Motherboard is ASUS-P3V4X.
My sound card is Sound Blaster Live MP3.
Mandrake 7.2 recognizes Live MP3, but of the mistake, doesn't have sound.
I installed Mandrake 7.2 in a motherboard Tekram with VIA KX133
Tekram use North Bridge VT8371 and South Bridge VT82C686A and Live MP3
worked perfectly.
ASUS P3V4x uses VIA Apollo PRO 133A with VT82C694X and VT82C596B.
The problem should be in some of VTXXXXX.
Shortly we should have solution.
I await a solution.
Help Im new user of Linux.

Victor,

Sounds like a routing problem. As root at a shell prompt type in 'route
-n'..
you should at least see 1, and ideally 2 entries

One for 127.0.0.0 which is the loopback psuedo network and
one for 192.168.1.0 (if you gave your NIC IP 192.168.1.1).

For more details there is a Networking 'HOWTO' (but at the moment I
can't give you the URL as I'm not on my normal PC).

John

When I started my linux install 9 days ago, I was not sure how much I
would like it and had intended to keep using my win2k install for most of
my computing needs. After a week of playing I've changed my mind.
Originally when I partitioned and installed Debian I put it on a 5 gig
partion on my second hardrive. What I would like to do is is add the
other 5 gig on that hardrive into the partition that is currently my
linux native. Question is there an easy way of doing this? or am I
basically hosed and need to start over. I'm looking for a way of
doing this without doing the following:

rename /usr > usr.backup
mount new 5 gig partion to /usr
and then copy all the info in usr.backup to usr

I know I can add space by mounting into the file system. What I would
like to do is add that 5 gig into the current partition.

Anybody know how to make text-mode linux come up in 50-line text mode?
I'm trying to set up an old laptop which is too small and slow to load X.
The standard 25-line (or is it 24?) mode sucks.

I have had good luck running RedHat linux on many machines with 3c509 cards.
What kind of install did you do?
Which network configuration tool did you use?
What kind of network are you connected to? Do you know that it is good, do
you have the proper network settings?
Did you reboot the computer, does the command prompt show the proper
hostname?
Did you restart your network service after changing settings?
Do you know if the network card is good?
What kind of 3c509 card do you have, is it a combo card? Maybe your card is
configured to use the wrong port, for example the bnc connector instead of
the bui or the rj45 connector?

What did you do with ifconfig? Try command "/sbin/ifconfig", what output do
you get?
Try command "/sbin/lsmod" to see if you have the network module loaded, if
you are running a modular kernel.
Does your PC find the network card, look at output of "dmesg" command or
look at /proc/interrupts, /proc/ioports, /proc/modules to see if you see
3c509 listed.

Are you running the default RedHat Linux 7.0 kernel? Run command "uname -a"
to see what version you are running.

Have you tried to use Linuxconf to configure your network settings? It
works pretty well, is a graphical admin tool available in Xwindows.
"/sbin/linuxconf" as user root.

Hope this helps,
Chip

Hi,

the long telnet connection time is often caused by no or incorrect
"reverse lookups" of local DNS servers for those boxes - in an MS
environment, revers IP is often not set up correctly as Wins/broadcast
hides the misconfiguration nad can resolve IP addresses to host names for
it.

Redhat 6.1 does include the floppy driver (on my system).
Maybe the drive has failed, have you tested it with a
boot floppy?

Check the file /var/log/dmesg for logs of the floppy drive init
at boot time, that should give you some clue what is broken.
Look right after the logs of hard drive init(s)

of course have followed what I've read about not using root except for

It sounds like sda1 is bad again and the kernel can't file it needs to run
the first script in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d. I guess your real question is why the
filesystem is going bad again. I don't know that one.

Everything compiles fine (using processor type of PIII), the modules build
ok and install ok. My sound card is functioning via module, All updates
included in Changes have been made But My SCSI Card & CDrom fail to load
and the 3com 3c59x driver fails to load. My usb mouse also fails to work.

I am running RedHat 7.0 so at boot kudzu does autodetection and I will get
the Add/Remove dialogs depending whether I boot to 2.2.18 or 2.4.pre.

My question is can anyone explain the problems. or tell me some more
things to try

MY other question is can someone explain to me the files that rh puts in
the /boot dir such as module-info.version and initrd.version? Can I
create these files for my 2.4 kernel? If so how? Also a file called
kernel.h that was already there for 2.4.0 what is that file and is there
anything special I need to do with it?

Add a line to /etc/lilo.conf "vga = ask" and run /sbin/lilo -v
The next time one reboots linux will probe your graphics chip and allow
you to select a non-standard console. Last time I checked mine a number
between 0 and 9 allowed for everal combo 25x80 25x140 50x80 50x140. The
fonts vary as well and one is not as easily readable as the other.
Find out which one produces a usefull setting, and then replace the line
"vga = ask" in the file/etc/lilo.conf with the correct number, fi "vga=8"
and rerun /sbin/lilo -v

It means that there is an error of somesuch happening. Startup in
runlevel 3 (no XDM) and run /usr/bin/kdm manually.

I suspect that it should be /usr/X11/bin/kdm or some such.

Redhat uses linuxconf from the commandline to configure your system.
Read the introduction though.
You can use any programme as just your self. You can't change the system
settings, but a lot of programmes can be reconfigured to your liking
with the "hidden" files in your home directory. "ls -a ~/" will show those.

There is no way around logging in as root when you need to make changes
to the system. You could install the sudo programme though. That will
allow you to run a single command as root, without actually having to
log in as root. Second when it asks for a password it requires the
password for the user you are currently logged in as, as opposed to the
root password. You can also restrict the commands that can be run as
root via the sudo programme, fi to allow others to shut down linux
without having to hand out the root password or giving them unrestricted
access.

You can try to run gdm manually, from the console and see what error
message it's generating. /var/run keeps a list of pids that processes
are using; so if gdm quite "unexpectedly" then you'll get a stale file
sitting there (just like stale registry entries in Windows).

Sounds like, barring some wierd hardware error, you need to upgrade
GNOME to a more recent version; it's as easy as:

  lynx -source http://go-gnome.org | sh

(as the root user)

Shouldn't have an effect, unless, of course, it's a hardare conflict
of some sort (which can happen -- x86 hardware is cheap and flaky).

Your data can be accessed by booting into runlevel 1

LILO: linux 1

I have (and do) run linux on all these:

  386/25 4MB RAM
  486/66 16 MB RAM
  P5/133 Packard Bell
  P5/133 laptop
  PII/266 256MB RAM (~20GB space SCSI)
  CelronA/400 192MB RAM (my workstation)
  Athlon/700 128MB RAM (~30GB space IDE)
  Dual Pentium III/550 512MB RAM (~60GB SCSI)
Dual Pentium II/300 1GB RAM (~100GB SCSI RAID)
  Dual P5/166 [no mmx :)] 64MB RAM (~9GB SCSI)
  PII/400 laptop 128MB RAM
  PowerMac 7500 64MB RAM

And on many more like these -- I've installed many distributions, but
RedHat seems to be the most stable (at least, looking over the last 5
years it has been for us). I currently run RedHat 6.x on our
production machines and 7.0 on the desktops -- I do have a Debian and
a FreeBSD box as well.

I've had some problems with it, but none like I used to have with
Windows. I never *ever* use unsupported hardware on machines that
must work; I do have a Nvidia TNT2 Ultra in my desktop machine, which
is probably the only "experimental" piece of hardware that I use (and
XScreensaver can crash the X11 server with GL saves).

In short, I rarely (ie, practically never) have problems with it.
It's different than Windows NT. It's been well worth my time, and my
company's time. It just keeps getting better and better.

You should have seen the days of Slackware and FVWM.

I believe he's talking about 802.11 wireless encryption.

It's in the device driver parameters -- usually in
/etc/pcmcia/wireles.opts (or wavelan, depending on what you have).
You'll probably be able to copy this file from the RedHat box to the
Caldera box and it should work (unless the Caldera system's pcmcia
drivers are too old).

  man wavelan
  man wavelan_cs

And, you can check out the pcmcia pages on sourceforge.net. I use
802.11 here, if you have any questions.

$ rpm -qf /usr/lib/glib/include/glibconfig.h
glib-devel-1.2.8-4_helix_1

Looks like you need to re-install glib-devel.
