Wow! You don't hear that question very often.

Put vga=ask in the lilo config file, and lilo will ask you what
video mode you want. Once you know, put vga=mypreference.

Hello there ...
I am responsable for a server  runing linux ( RH 6.2 kernel 2.2.18 ,
samba 2.0.7 e ) and
since i upgraded the hardware ( pentium 200Mhz 32 MB  to a P III 128 RAM
via chipset )
i started to get severe linux craches and freezes ( i have to reboot
the machine )

i started by geting this :

Dec 18 10:41:21 netserver kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request
at virtual address 00200000
Dec 18 10:41:21 netserver kernel: current->tss.cr3 = 02e4d000, %cr3 =
02e4d000
Dec 18 10:41:21 netserver kernel: *pde = 00000000
Dec 18 10:41:21 netserver kernel: Oops: 0000
Dec 18 10:41:21 netserver kernel: CPU:    0

Then somebody told me that this could be problems with the DRAM chips
... so i changed the
ram chips for others and i started geting this messages :

Jan 3 11:12:50 netserver kernel: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer
dereference at virtual address 0000003f
Jan  3 11:12:50 netserver kernel: current->tss.cr3 = 00101000, %cr3 =
00101000
Jan  3 11:12:50 netserver kernel: *pde = 00000000
Jan  3 11:12:50 netserver kernel: Oops: 0000
Jan  3 11:12:50 netserver kernel: CPU:    0

And since i upgraded the hardware i start getting this message to :

Dec 27 04:02:37 netserver kernel: iput: device 03:01 inode 686846 still
has aliases!
Dec 27 04:02:37 netserver kernel: EXT2-fs error (device ide0(3,1)):

Dec 27 04:02:37 netserver kernel: iput: device 03:01 inode 327057 still

the harddrive is clean of bad sectors !!!

So ... my doubt is : Is this a RAM problem , a Hard Drive Problem or
motherboard problem ??????????

                                                                   Thank

How does one trap the output from xdm or kdm or startx or startkde? It is
failing for some reason and without documentation, I am a loss to figure out
why.  Thanks much.

Is there anyway to abort certain process during bootup, namely

- nfs mount
- http
- send mail

If the network is not setup correctly, each of the above processes will
take a long time to timeout. Just wondering if there are ways to abort
these processes such that I can get to the login prompt to config the
network parameters.

Thank You

Robert

Try tail -f /var/log/message or other log files in that directory.

Once again thanks. My previous email was a bit to early because it did fail
again. This time however I was able to compile without any errors using the
information you provided below. I'm learning everyday. Thanks.

Subject: lilo hangs when booting dos
Date: Fri, 05 Jan 2001 01:42:57 GMT

I've got a problem with my lilo installation. I'm running redhat 7.0 and
windoze 98 dual boot, except windows won't boot. At the lilo prompt I
select dos and then the screen says (loading dos) and just sits there.
(Loading dos) are the only words on the screen.
When I choose linux at the lilo prompt, it boots into linux and
everything works perfectly.
I can still boot into windows, I just have to change the default boot in
the bios.
Windows is installed on a 814MB disk and linux is installed on a 6.4 Gig
disk. There is a 1 gig windows partition on the 6.4 disk.
When I installed redhat, the installation program didn't give me a
choice to install the 814MB windows disk as part of the dual boot.
Instead the only dos choice it gave me was the 1 gig partition on the
6.4 gig disk. After installation, I went into linux config to change the
lilo setup, which I did, to boot (hdb) as dos. It gave me the results as
I wrote above.

Here is my lilo.conf file:
boot = /dev/hda
timeout = 50
linear
prompt
  message = /boot/message
  default = linux
  vga = normal
  root = /dev/hda4
  read-only
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-22
  label = linux
other = /dev/hdb
  label = dos

Here is the output of the lilo command with verbose output:
cript started on Thu Jan 4 20:29:13 2001
]0;root@Monster: /root[root@Monster /root]# lilo -v -v -v

Motherboard or processor, if you've changed the RAM out. Just to make
sure, go to http://freshmeat.net/ and look up "memtest86" so you can
make sure it isn't the RAM. leave about an hour to do a full check.
I'd think this is a motherboard problem, myself... borrow a board or
processor, swap components, and see if the problem persists.

You might be interested to know that I got through this problem.

I unchecked the setting 'Configure files so my programs start faster' (or
similar wording) in Windows Defrag, which was leaving stuff at the end of
the hard drive and not allowing FIPS to find the last cylinder empty. Ran
Defrag again and then was able to install Red Hat successfully.

Well, nearly. I unintentionally selected PS2 mouse during setup and now I
have no mouse when Gnome starts. In addition, the video display is too big
for the screen, with the Gnome panel out of sight. I can't seem to find any
keyboard way of starting anything from there. I am currently searching the
Linux Pocketbook for a way to reconfigure for a serial mouse. Any
suggestions welcome.

At the lilo prompt enter "linux 1" without the quotes. When it gets to
the boot prompt you are in root so be careful. Depending on the distro
version you are running, the following will work for redhat.

ls /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/ # or rc3.d/ if you want a text console.

This will list the files

mv /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/SXXsendmail  /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/KXXsendmail
        # where the XX is the number next to sendmail

Don't chnage the number just the "S" to a "K" and do the same for any
service you want to disable. Then to get to runlevel 5 just enter "init
5" or "init 3" for a text comsole without the quotes.

Hope this helps.

I just found an old computer that doesnt have a cd-rom. The box is an old

am behind a linksys router and connected to the internet via a cable modem.
All computers on the LAN are connected to the internet by the router and
DHCP. However, I cannot seem to get the linux install to detect DHCP. Any

I found this thread (thanks!) while trying to solve the same problem.
The CD-Writing HOWTO mentions these modules too, but on my system
(RH6.2) modprobe is unable to find a module sr_mod. Trying 'locate
sr_mod' yields nothing.

Where can I find sr_mod?
