You need to boot up with something else (floppy, cdrom, zip drive,
etc.); that's the only way.

Ah, newbies playing around as root. Oh well, it happens to everyone and you

end up learning more about the system as a result of the things you break.

Well, I am not sure about what is the best way to solve this problem. I

suggest you try using rpm. At the command line enter "rpm --help" and you

will see an option "--setperms" and "--setugids". You can use these options

to restore the owner, group, and permissions.

For example, I changed the permissions of /usr/bin/gphoto. I then ran the

command "rpm --setperms gphoto" and it restored the permissions. You could

write a quick script to run the rpm commands on the packages in your

database. Using the "--verify" option with rpm will also let you know if

there are any problems with a package. By the way, there is a package

called filesystem, so running "rpm --setugids filesystem" will restore the

owner and group values for the main filesystem.

Let me know if this works, or if you need any other help.

Good luck,

Chip

Subject: Lin4Win Install
Date: Fri, 05 Jan 2001 15:55:44 GMT

I've been trying to install Mandrake 7.1 Lin4Win on my Win98 machine at
home, but I keep running into the same problem.

I run the setup utility and things seem to work ok, but when it gets to
the part where it is supposed to switch to DOS mode and boot Linux, the
screen flashes a couple of times and the machine *completely* re-boots,
bringing me back into Win98!!!

Here's my machine's specs:

-Celeron 300 (with L2)
-Abit BE6 mb
-96 mb RAM
-Ensoniq Audio PCI
-ATI Rage Fury Pro 32 mb AGP
-Win98 first edition

Does anyone know what's going on here or have any ideas on how to fix
it? This is really frustrating. I have installed Lin4Win on 98 machines
at work with no problem, but I keep getting the same problem at home.

Barring ever getting Lin4Win to work, does anyone know of a free and
reliable partition re-sizer that isn't going to destroy my Win98
install???

If it's happening during scenes with a lot of action, it is most likely
due to virtual memory paging information back and forth to the hard
drive. Your best bet then is to look into HD optimizations for your
machine. There are two things I would recommend:

1) Get a second hard drive, and split the swap partition between your
new drive and the old one (but make sure each drive is on a separate
IDE channel, they should both be masters...) You can then give each
swap partition the same priority in your fstab file. What this will do
is allow you to use 2 drives in parallel for your paging activities,
which should almost double the performance of your swap partition
paging.

2) Look into HDPARMS. This is a hard drive optimization program that
should speed up your hard drive reads/writes. !WARNING! Read everything
you can about this program first, if it's not used correctly it can
cause data to be lost. I have read reports of people achieving 3x-5x
speed boosts on their HD accesses after successfully configuring
HDPARMS, however, I have older drives in my machine, and was only able
to get a little boost.

If you need a better explanation of these, e-mail me.

I'm trying to get my shiny new keyboard with lots of funky internet

I've got me a suitable .Xmodmap file but when I try to load it xmodmap

xkb_keycodes and tried to increase the keycode maximum but got nowhere.
I'm not tunning X4.0 and don't really want to.........

Ok, I have a DLink ISA PnP card, you didn't mention it, so I am going
to assume you also have a similar ISA card as PCI PnP cards tend not to
have these problems. There's a coupld of things you will need to look
into.

Find a FAQ or HOWTO about the "isapnp" program, this program allows you
to configure ISA PnP cards. It works in conjunction with "pnpdump"
which profiles your ISA PnP cards and outputs possible specs.

Generally you use pnpdump like so

pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf

This will produce a config file for isapnp, which you need to edit.
Most of the editing instructions will be in either the pnpdump output
or the isapnp man pages/docs. Essentially, pnpdump finds each ISA pnp
card's I/O port and IRQ range, then you edit the file to specify which
IRQ and I/O range each detected card will use. After having edited the
file you run:

isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf

Which will then setup the hardware for you. However, you may still need
to load the drivers and configure the card. The drivers can be loaded
using the "modprobe" command. Generally like so:

modprobe ne.o

If you have any problems, you can try specifying the io and irq on the
modprobe command line (the syntax escapes me at the moment, but it
should be in the modprobe man pages).

After loading the drivers you can configure the card using the
"ifconfig" command like so:

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1

Send me an e-mail if you need more specific info.

My guess is that you will need a new CD. I had a Mandrake 6.0 CD that
never installed properly and gave me similar errors. The disk was
defective.

Was there anything else on the disc before?
If so, I'm sorry to inform you: the patient has died

Anyhow, never let an installer run on its own.
Always choose expert install or something like that, if you don't have a
clean disc. The install will assume an empty disc if you don't guide it.

Now you found out, you better start over again.
All previous data is lost, so you can't destroy much anyway

The system already booted, or else you wouldn't get this far.

This is called a command line interface.
It's fun too.

Im trying to install MySQL 3.23.28, Apache 1.3.14 & PHP 4.04 on a fresh
RedHat 7 installation.
MySQL went fine, and it appeared Apache and PHP did too, but I get this
strange error when I try to start Apache....

=====
[root@tie apache_1.3.14]# ./bin/apachectl start
Syntax error on line 207 of /usr/local/bin/apache_1.3.14/conf/httpd.conf:
Cannot load /usr/local/bin/apache_1.3.14/libexec/libphp4.so into server:
undefined symbol: uncompress
./bin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started
=====

Obviously I checked httpd.conf, but nothing seems strange there.
I know that libphp4.so exists in that location.
I tried to compile PHP again, but I still get the same error.

Thanks in advance...

Hey

I am the person at Adaptec responsible for that driver. First let me say
that our web site is very out of date. The DPT legacy section has not had
any updated drivers posted for a long time. This is not because we are not
maintaining them. They are the same drivers that work with the new
2100s/3200... cards. You can download one of those packages which should
work fine. The person that maintains that section of the web site will not
cross link the drivers until the older cards have been completely through
the testing matrix (something that is not likely to happen soon). We are
working on developing a new policy to handle the nature of Open Source and
the rapidly developing Linux world. Our new web site linux.adaptec.com
should be coming online in by the end of this month.

I also have a beta version of the new driver available. This is really beta
(a complete rewrite and has not completed our testing matrix). I can send
you that one also if you wish. The older driver had problems when compiled
with gcc version greater then 2.91. It tended to aggressively optimize and
that broke the driver. The new driver does not have that limitation.

Please feel free to write and I will help you get it working.

Right,

As I said, I try to stick to the documentation which comes with it but for
example not all the configuration scripts (./configure) are present in all
directories but the INSTALL document says that I would have to run
./configure.

I am running RH 7.0 with a 2.2.18 kernel which works fine (in fact
everything works perfectly). I also have all the libs and tools which are
required but if there is no clear guidance on how to compile LiVid how shall
I do it ?

This is why I asked whether anybody else has had any problems. As a result
there are no error messages because I don't even get to the stage of
compilation.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Oliver
