I had a similar problem installing mandrake 2000(?). What I found was the
config.sys file trys to load linux as a shell from a menuing system. The
menu load does not seem to work. What I did was rem out all the lines that
mattered on the config.sys file and add the batch file I found in the
lnx4win directory to the autoexec.bat file with dos editor or notepad.exe.
A second and easier way... is to go into windows and add the batch file as a
shortcut from the desktop and launch Linux right for inside of windows.
This is the file you are looking for...
c:\lnx4win\linux.bat

Subject: Hang at LI prompt after RedHat 7 upgrade
Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 17:07:25 -0500
Hello,
I tried to upgrade one of our RedHat 6.2 systems to 7.0 recently and have
come up against a brick wall. The install went fine off the CDs. On reboot,
it hanged (hung?) at the LI prompt. Following the LILO documentation, I
booted using a floppy, and figured that the problem was with the
/boot/boot.b file. So I tried to run LILO after chrooting to the mount
point. The trouble began when it gave me an error saying:
Map segment is too big.
Now, everything in the /boot directory seems to have the right size. The
partition record seems to be ok because I can mount all the partitions with
no problem once I boot from the floppy. Is there anything I overlooked? Any
help would be greatly appreciated. I have slept since this occurred.
As usual, thanks in advance,
Ravi
PS: I cannot go back to 6.2 either because it always hangs at the "Finding
packages to upgrade" step.

Yes, it's already booted in the sense that the kernel is loaded, but
the system is stalled in the midst of the boot up process and as far
as I can tell, unusable. What I failed to mention was that the flashes
and the message recur indefinitely and I couldn't find a way to
interupt them except by C-A-Del.

I did indeed call it a command line, but I disagree there's any fun
here! Unfortunately, before I learn my way around Linux, I have
to get it running, which is a sort of catch 22. I'm coming from OS/2,
where I know the command line like the back of my hand. But
under commercial systems like OS/2, knowing the command
line is helpful for controlling the system, but not necessary for
keeping it running.
In any case, I appreciate your honesty. I think I've been mislead
by some of the zealots who try to claim that Linux runs reliably
right out of the box. The reality seems to be, as you say, that
you do need to know your way around the system, and
every now and then get out, turn a crank, give the system a push
from behind, and jump back in before it veers off the road. I can
live with that, if that's what makes it work.

Subject: Leafnode unable to connect via Secure Password Authentication
Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 17:25:23 -0500
Hi All,
I have a laptop running RedHat v6.2 and leafnode v1.9.17. I have a news
server that I want to access which requires a password and username. I can
connect to the news server with Microsoft Outlook in which I have selected
"Logon using Secure Password Authentication".
My configuration file only has the server, username, password, expire, and
newsgroups lines. When I connect to the server with fetchnews -vvv -n, I
can see it connecting followed by a disconnect. I would assume that the
remote news server is disconnecting me. This probably has to do with the
Secure Password Authentication requirement of the news server. So how do I
configure linux to get in? I am trying to get all of the headers and bodies
of the posts from several newsgroups on the news server to my local
harddrive where I can disconnect my modem and then read and post at my
leisure.
Anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried booting into "linux single" which should give you a root

It seems another device may be using the same I/O port address
as the floppy drive (0x3f0).
Check if this is true in the /proc/ioports file, the device
using the 03f0 port address should be listed in there. Mine
looks like this:
<snip>
03f0-03f5 : floppy
03f6-03f6 : ide0
03f7-03f7 : floppy DIR
<snip>
If there is another device using that I/O port then you must
change its setting so the floppy can use it. If there is not,
then the floppy drive may well have failed on you, have you
been able to test the drive with a boot floppy?
Hope this helps,
Bluster

Oh, is that ALL. Your gdm is tarting and restarting indefinitely. Boot
in runlevel 3 (or 2, or 1).# and fix it.

It is running. Just fine. You can log into it from any remote computer
and check. If gdm doesn't run, just turn it off. I fail to see what you
need it for if you're the only user on your machine, which it sounds
like you are.

There is nothing to know in the command line. You can't call a language
of about 50-500 words anything other than trivial.

You do know, don't you :-), that you can copy the whole thing with one

cp -a /usr.backup /usr
I think that is correct. If not, someone please correct my syntax.

Supposedly you might be able to do this (with the RAID module), but it would
not be simple.

I hear conflicting reports on PM and Linux.

My Xsession file has the following at the start:
# redirect errors to a file in user's home directory if we can
for errfile in "$HOME/.xsession-errors" "${TMPDIR-/tmp}/xses-$USER"
"/tmp/xses-$USER"
do
if ( cp /dev/null "$errfile" 2> /dev/null )
then
chmod 600 "$errfile"
exec > "$errfile" 2>&1
break
fi
done
This would normally redirect the KDE start up messages to
"$HOME/.xsession-errors".
If you don't have it, you could add something like:
echo > ~/.xsession-errors
exec > ~/.xsession-errors 2>&1
Then you also need to be sure that kdm or xdm is being executed.
The last line of "inittab" passes control to something -- probably a script --
to start the process.
You can change this to:
x:5:once:/usr/bin/kdm
{where the number and the path might be different on your system}
and see if that fixes it.
