Frank,

Go to the above URL for the HOWTO briefing on what you're trying to
do. It also applies to the HPT370 controller. There's more to it than
just the patch. Good luck.

Don't. Partition properly. / /var /boot /usr /usr/local and /home
(also possibly /opt and /usr/share). Check out the Partition-HOWTO.

Win2K and Redhat7 dual boot perfectly for me. I use LILO to boot Linux or

You would need to use the SMB tools, specifically the smbspool IIRC.

apt-get install smbclient
man smbspool

Linuxconf does the trick. If you are used to NT try getting your hands
on Reflection or Exceed, this will make the transition over to Linux
Easier. BTW those apps aren't freebies. I been trying to write some
stuff you can run off of your Windows Box, www.gui4linux.com, honestly,

Ja. I dind't like the Mandrake installation procedure at all. It seems
that they're trying to make a Windoze lookalike in Linux, or something
like that.
The next Linux install I do will be Debian. :)

I chose Mandrake 7.2 over Red Hat 7.0 b/c it had a couple of programs I
wanted (like KDE 2.0). I now see that Red Hat would have been a better
choice. I can't really be bothered getting rid of it and replacing it
with RH, though, since what I really want is Debian (I just haven't
found anywhere I can get it except on the 'net yet). Still, now that the
installation is over, it's still fundamentally Linux, it just might take
a little more configuring to put it the way I want it rather than the
way the Mandrake people wanted it.

Create a RH6.1 boot disk.
Boot in DOS or Windows,
d:
cd \dosutils

After creating the RH6.1 boot disk, reboot with the RH6.1 boot floppy and
hopefully you can run with Redhat 6.1

Subject: How do you make RedHat CD to install from
Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 20:53:12 -0600

Here is the question:

I downloaded RedHat 6.2 from a Red Hat mirror. I couldn't fit all the stuff
on CD, however, I did make the i386 containing all the RPMS and other
material. Made boot disk and got into the Red Hat install program. Then the
install program asked me where the system was to be installed from. I then
said, the CD Rom, (other choice I believe was hard drive, maybe NFS also,
but I don't think so). Anyway, the install disk said it couldn't find a Red
Hat CD in the CD Rom drive. There lies my problem. Probably need to have
proper directory structures. Also, CD made from Windoze machine and used ISO
9660 with Joliet extenstions. I know the CD's used to be with Rock Ridge
extenstions, however, you really can't find a program that supports those in
Windoze, at least I couldn't. Anyway, anyone have any suggestions on how to
make the CD Rom so it works?

Thanks, Bill

1) On the linux PC: in X11 windows open an xterm window,
   in the xterm type:

$ xhost + unixhostname

To allow the unix host to access linux X11 display

2) in the xterm window: telnet (or ssh) into the unix host
   and start the oracle app.

The app. should display on the linux PC.

Subject: syslog+kernel 2.4.0
Date: Sat, 6 Jan 2001 05:03:24 +0100

Hi

I recently installed kernel 2.4.0 on my RedHat 7.0 system with all
available updates. Everything seemed fine until the initscripts came to
syslog.

Syslog just hangs for a minute or so before starting (from the 'Starting
syslogd' to '[ OK ]'). This is awfully long time (took about a second or
so on 2.2.18). If I start 2.2.18 it still goes fine - the problem is only
with 2.4 kernels (also with the 2.4.0-test* kernels I tried).

I tried recompiling the sysklogd package (although it was already
compiled against 2.4 headers), but it didn't help. I have tried upgrading
to 1.4 - didn't help either.

It starts ok - but I would like it to use less than half of the very long
boot-time...

Thx.
