I don't know if this applies to you (I use Debian potato), but I need
to pon <ISP> before I use Netscape. There is a setting on pppconfig
called demand dialling that would allow applications to initiate the
connection. I think it's normal to establish the connection prior to
starting Netscape. G.

I use Debian, and I was a little worried when I wanted to upgrade to
2.2.18pre21. It turned out that it was just as simple as installing an
application - using dselect. Everything had been taken care of by the
amazing people who put the package together. My guess would be that rpm
would do the same thing. G.

I have two machines one running RedHat Linux and the other running Win98.
they are hooked up with a KVM switch.
If I am set to the Linux machine when it boots and stay there the mouse
works fine but if I switch to the Win98 box and then back the mouse jumps
all over the place and does not function properly.
Any suggestions.

Debian puts the kernel configuration file that make uses to build the
kernel in the boot directory (/boot/config-2.2.18pre21 on my system).
Maybe RH does something similar. G.

You should be able to use any reputable CD creation program (I use EZ
CD Creator 4.0) and select "Create CD from disc image". Specify which
.iso file you want to use and the program will begin to create a
bootable RedHat install CD. The exact same CD's that you would be
able to buy in a box at the store. You don't get the hardcopy
documentation though.
Good Luck

Go to the Linux Documentation Project and start with the Installation
HOWTO - it contains more links. There's also the Linux Installation
Guide. Scrounge around the site for any other information that might
seem appropriate (you will find quite a lot of it). There used to be a
Dual-Boot-HOWTO, but I can't find it on my system. Good luck. G.

When I was installing RedHat Linux 6.2, my Microsoft serial mouse worked
fine (I could use it during setup).
Redhat probed it as generic serial mouse, and I reluctantly agreed. When I
rebooted into Gnome, mouse did not work. I tried to reinstall choosing
Microsoft serial mouse - the same result i.e. mouse doesn't work in Gnome.
In terminal, when I ran mouseconfig (from /usr/sbin), my mouse began to
work... Now, when I tried to run mouseconfig, mouse doesn't work (I guess I
did something...). Can you help me?
Also, would you please tell me how to exit from gnome? I tried
CTRL+ALT+BKSPACE, but it only quits current session of Gnome.
Thanks..
P.S.
I checked the mouse under Windows95, and it appears to work.

I'm finally getting around to putting some web pages up on my machine
running RedHat 7.0 and Apache.
I thought I had enabled access to ~user "public_html" directories in the
/etc/httpd/httpd.conf file.
I've looked to make sure "Allow all" is turned on, and that the file
permissions for the directories and files are world readable.
But, when I try to connect by http://xxx.xxx.xxx/~user I get an error
saying "You do not have the permissions necessary to access the files".
I'm sure its something I'm not seeing in the httpd.conf file.
Can anyone give me a shove in the right direction?

It sure sounds like the box has been rootkited, and the first thing they
change is login to keep you out. I hope you have backups of the user
data, you might need to format and re-install to get everything thats
been changed.
But first, try booting by entering 'linux single' at the boot prompt.
This might get you in enough to check things out. Compare the login
you've got with a known good one of the same vendor, version number on
another machine. Get familiar with lsattr and chattr as the rootkiter
will often set the i bit on the files he changed so they can't be
changed back. Don't trust your ls utils, any of them until you've
replaced them with known good ones. Look in the /var tree, and in the
/dev tree for suspicious files and/or directories, one favorite trick is
to stick their stuff in a directory named ..
There's lots more of course. Maybe it can be fixed. And maybe it
can't. Needless to say, get it off the net until your are ready to go
to redhat and download and install *all* the updates from their errata
directory. Nothing older than bind-8.2.2p7 is safe, shut anon ftp off
and have a port closing party of anything you don't absolutely need.
Then goto www.psionic.com and get portsentry, its been very good to me,
my office machines /etc/hosts.deny looks like the LA phonebook!
Cheers, Gene

It's actually pretty basic. If you have a windows 98 boot disk (or can make
one) you're all set.
Assuming you can get one, do the following:
1) Boot using the boot disk.
2) Fdisk and make your first drive partition FAT16 -- (since I don't know
which Linux you are using, I won't suggest using FAT32 for your first
partition)
3) Install Win98
4) Start setting up Win 2000 from within Win 98. Be sure to choose "Clean
Install".
5) Let Win 2000 handle the partitioning and formatting of your Win2000
partition -- this way you can use NTFS if you want to.
6) Assuming you haven't run into any hard drive UDMA errors, you should now
have Win2000 installed. Boot back to DOS
7) Install Linux.

I just went from Caldera 2.2.10 to 2.2.18 by only downloading the new

The best help I found was the kernel HOW-TO and the README file in

You essentially have two routes:
1) Download the kernel source for 2.2.18 and follow the kernel-HOWTO
step by step (i.e. read it 4 times and then try to follow it)
2) Download the 2.2.16-22 kernel RPM that RH has on it's mirrors and
it's ftp site. You should have downloaded it with the 7.0 distro.
simply run rpm -Uvh kernel-2.2.16-22.rpm for a uni-processor and also
the smp.rpm for multiprocessor boxes.
Personally I think it would be woth your while to follow step 1
inorder to run the latest kernel you feel comfortable, as I am not
sure there exists a 2.2.18 kernel RPM, and to get to know more about
the essence of Linux.

Having upgraded from RedHat 5.something to RH6.2, I have noticed yet
another 'funny': When starting X, I see the message flash by just before
the screen goes into graphics: "Hostname: Host name lookup failure".
Upon switching back to window 1, I find I cannot scroll up to see the
other lines of context, as X seems to wipe all the scrollback apart from
the single visible screenful. When I type the command "hostname", it
correctly identifies the computer's name.
So two Qs:
1) Why does X fail to get the hostname when I can get it running the
same command?
2) Why does X wipe out the scrollback for the text window from which X
was started?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Bill. I totally agree with James. Adding to his post, you have to
be sure to download the correct ISO also. Get the i386 ISO, and it
should just about fill up the CD, when you create the way James has
described. NOTE: If you ever go to Redhat 7, you really don't need
the second CD, so don't even bother creating it. I, like James, used
EZ CD Creator 4.0 when I made my 6.2 CDs and my 7.0 CD. Works great,
and boots just like it's supposed too. Of course I wasted a CD before
I found about the option James mentioned.
