Hi,
I just replace my old inetd with xinetd since it
sounds good. But I failed to telnet to my linux
box after that.
env: xinetd, RH7, wu_ftp
err: connection refused when telnet
I have checked that the /etc/services contains
both ftp and telnet with well known port.
the config file of xinetd includes /etc/xinetd.d
and inside /etc/xinetd.d, I can only found wu_ftpd
and weblinuxconf, but no inetd, should I keep to old
inetd such that xinetd can run or somethings else.
If xinetd must live on inetd, why should I use it?
Thanks!

Does the /etc/hosts file show something like this for the loopback line.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
Or something like this?
127.0.0.1 localhost hostname.domain.com

Hi,
I am must use my W2K Advance server to program SQL7 and
I don't want to stop my linux services (telnet, ftp, etc.).
Someone point me to the VMWare, and it seams good. I saw
it work on my friends machine (booting into 98SE in linux).
But after I install VMWare, it failed to boot into W2K Adv
Server. It can show the BIOS, the Win logo and just before
it starting services (W2K's services), it runs into blue
screan and telling me that failed to boot due to XXXXX reason.
And advice me to check about virus ?! Is that any thing
wrong between W2K adv server and linux or I should set
more things. I CAN BOOT INTO W2K THROUGH LILO !
env: W2K adv server + SQL7 in hda1, RH7 in hda2, via chipset ?!

Hi
How do I connect my Linux machine to a Microsoft Proxy Server.
I am also encountering problems with Telnet.
When I telnet to a remote host 'Hostname Lookup failure'
appears. However if I add the IP and HostName to '/etc/hosts' I am able
to connect.
I presume my Network Settings arent allright.Advice is solicited.

Maybe this Peter? (ripped from a howto)
Hostname
One final item, especially for Redhat systems, make sure that your
give
your machine a name (any single word name you want). You can set it
with
hostname <yourhostname>
But you also want to change it permanently. In Redhat/Mandrake, put
the line
HOSTNAME=<yourhostname>
into /etc/sysconfig/network. On other systems I am not sure, but you
could always put the hostname command at the end of your rc.local
file.
This is not essential to running ppp, but if you do not do it, you
will
find yourself unable to run any X application while running ppp.
======================
Maybe if you add a name it will work?

I am entirely a Linux newbie. I have installed Red Hat Llinux 7
"successfully", but when I start the X Windows, the display just grow too
big and run out of screen that even a button fills a quarter of the screen.
I am using Acerview 33 (an indeed very old model) and S3 Trio video card. I
have run Xconfigurator and experiment with video mode settings several times
and still got no cure.
Everything is fine in Windows (800 x 600), but I don't know what is
happening here.
Assistance from you is very much appreciated.
By the way, I have another question. Can I exit from KDE to the shell
prompt?

Hi, I'm relatively new to Linux (although i'm trying to catch up :)
I've used SuSe 6.4 previously, didn't like it as few of my hardware
actually worked.......Had to do it all myself.
I've now switched to Mandrake 7.2, and boy, this is great! Almost
everything works from start, the directory structure is much better (read:
more logical) than SuSe 6.4. Mandrake is heavily based on RedHat. You can
choose to install a very small system, or a very large one, without a hitch.
Hope I helped you somewhat

I've done three, that I can remember, Deb installs over the net via ftp,
also a couple of FreeBSD. I'm kind of outback and it's pretty hard to
find much of any kind of distro on disk or cd down at the general store
and I'm kind of a procrastinator on ordering things through mail.
Getting back to Debian, the net install isn't bad, get the install
floppy images down to DOS or Linux and rawrite or DD them to disk. I
learned from experience in that process, to just get the base system the
first go around and get it up and running and then mix and match with
dselect or apt get and gradually build the system at leisure.
I live about fifty yards too far on the wrong side of the rail road
track for DSL and cable ain't come to town so my net installs are with
56k modem and the base install takes about five hours or so.
Deb is good choice.

You didn't mention which version of VMWare you're using.
Their Web site specifies that the $79 Express version
will only emulate Win95/98, and won't support 2000.
This takes the Workstation version.

Not really indicative... this is not a case of emulating
Win2000, you're actually booting Win2000, just with a
different bootstrap loader (I'm doing that here with
Win95 and WinNT).

I had a similar problem. It turned out that the floppy I had installed lilo
to was write protected. The install didn't report a problem writing the new
boot disk so I was using lilo from 6.2 against the 7.0 installation.
Re-creating the boot disk fixed the problem.
I suppose you could have the same problem if your old lilo was written to
your MBR and your new one on your boot partition????
Hope this helps

Every time after PC booted from CDROM, and no mater which boot mode
(graphical or text )I chose, (I guess that at the first stage, the
installing program makes kernel to reside in ramdisk, and probing all
hardware he recognized, and we see lots of message (I typed it all
below for your reference) scroll up.) when I saw the this last line of
message " running /sbin / loader " and noticed the CDROM and harddisk
running and working for about 5 seconds or so, then the whole PC
deadlocked and hanged.
Even if I chose expert mode for installing ,after answering some
questions like choosing language(I chose English),keyboard type(I chose
us),installation method(I chose cdrom)
Device driver(I chose done for not adding scsi and network driver) and
then the result always turns out to be the same : hanging.
Do I have to pass any argument to the kernel? What should I do?
Guys ! help !
Thanks.

Hello,
I don't know anything about M$ crap server, but it sounds for me like you
have an DNS problem,
setup a nameserver you can reach in /etc/resolv.conf (man resolv.conf),
in order to make gethostbyname() lucky...
from my /etc/resolv.conf :
nameserver 127.0.0.1
Don't copy just this, as I'm running nscd on my box...:-)
Good luck

I would recommend Debian myself. It has the most software available, you
can do a very small or _very_ large installation, and it's non-profit
(if you care about that:). I don't know how nice the installation is,
but I would tend to think it would be good. It does depend on exactly
what you want, though. If you want a distro that will do everything in
the install and work fine afterwards, albeit without giving you much
choice about _how_ it works, Mandrake 7.2 will certainly do that. For my
purposes, I think something like Debian would be much better than
Mandrake, but I know I can't speak for everybody.
