1= install win98
2= install partitionmagic.. but do NOT install bootmagic.
3=resize your existing partition with partitionmagic to create ampty space
for linux. (min. 600mb. 2+GB is good idea)
do NOT need to create a partition, just an empty space for linux.
than try to install RH7-linux, follow on-screen instructions, you don't need
a boot manager, linux has its own bootmanager called "lilo" that will take
care of your win98 too.
good luck

Subject: rt18139.c
Date: Sat, 06 Jan 2001 12:26:18 GMT
now i've got the driver for the my ethernet card for Redhat 5.2
installed in my pc. (i know this version is.....)
The guidance for gettn the driver run and connect the pc to the internet
is as follows:
*****************************************************************************
*
*
* 32-Bit PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
*
*
*
* Driver Installation for LINUX
*
*
*
*****************************************************************************
Below are the instructions for installing linux driver. You must complie the
source code to generate rtl8139.o and use "insmod" to insert rtl8139.o
as module.
You can use "netconfig" utilities to setup network parameters for the
driver.
Files Description:
==================
rtl8139.c The adapter source code. You can download the newest version from
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html or
ftp://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/linux/drivers/rtl8139.c
trans Compile batch file.
linux.txt This file.
Installation:
=============
1. Plug 32-Bit PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter into PC's PCI-bus slot.
2. Boot into LINUX and keyin the following commands at the LINUX prompt.
Remember, LINUX is case sensitive.
mkdir /temp
mcopy a:/linux/rtl8139.c /temp
mcopy a:/linux/trans /temp
cd /temp
chmod 777 trans
3. Run trans file to complie and copy driver to linux source code:
/temp/trans
(rtl8139.o will be generated and be copied to /usr/src/linux/modules.)
4. Run netconfig (or netcfg) to set you network parameter (like ip,
gateway).
Slackware: Run "netconfig" to configure IP environment.
This will create '/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1' and 'rc.inet2' files.
netconfig
RedHat:
- Add "alias eth0 rtl8139" into the /etc/conf.modules file.
cd /etc
vi conf.modules
alias eth0 rtl8139
- Run "netcfg" in the xterm of X-window to configure IP environment.
startx
netcfg
(Configure IP of eth0 and enable "Activate interface at boot time".)
5. Use editor vi to modify 'rc.inet1'(or 'rc') in the /etc/rc.d directory to
insmod driver. This file will be run at boot time. You just add a line
at the beginning of 'rc.inet1'(or 'rc').
Slackware:
cd /etc/rc.d
vi rc.inet1
insmod /usr/src/linux/modules/rtl8139.o
RedHat: Add a line at the beginning of 'rc' file.
cd /etc/rc.d
vi rc
insmod /usr/src/linux/modules/rtl8139.o
6. Reboot the LINUX.
reboot ( or shutdown -r now )
When system boots, the driver will be loaded. Then the driver will
scan I/O port to see if a card is there.
(You can run 'dmesg' to see the boot message.)
7. Run 'ifconfig' or 'netstat -i' to see if there is a interface 'eth0'.

Wow, that's really interesting. I didn't know about that option. I'd
thought about downloading it, but thought I
would have to download the indivdual 650 MB CDROM images. What does the
base install include? Does it have X and kde/gnome etc..., or is it
truly baseline only? I'll check for the info on their site now...
I'd actually much rather build my own system like that than get a
pre-packaged distro. I probably won't do that on this computer,
though...
Thanks. :)

I've had that problem, or one like it, when my video card wasn't
supported. That was using an old distro of Linux and a very new card,
though... perhaps your card is old enough that linux drivers haven't
been made for it? Or perhaps they're just not distributed with RH7.0.
Look for drivers to download, and if you find the right one, install it.
If you can't find any, though, I don't really know what to suggest,
except expensive things like getting a new video card...

Perhaps the . directory hasn't been put in the path? Try ./trans to tell
it to find it, or even <current directory path>/trans to make sure
there's no confusion. If that is the problem, you'll probably want to
put the . <current> directory in the path (although I can't remember
exactly how to do this... someone help?).

> b) and what is "chmod 777" actually??
chmod changes the file permissions. The number is the code for the
permissions, converted from some base other than 10, I think. Type
man chmod
or look up chmod in a manual to find out exactly how to deocode the
number. I can dig it up and type it in if you can't find it anywhere
else.

Thanks....
FWIW....I went ahead and tried 2.4.0 after applying all the RH 7.0
updates listed on the web site. I also made the change to the makefile
so that it would use kgcc in stead of gcc. The kernel appeared to
compile just fine.....though the text flies by so fast you can't really
make sense of it anyway. Maybe it is stored somewhere....I'll have to
have a look.
Anyway.....when I booted it, it came up fine except it is clearly
missing some files it expects to find in the
/lib/modules/2.4.0/dependencies directory.....which doesn't exist. I
have the 2.2.16-22 modules directory.......so either the kernel has the
wrong name, or I have to go find whatever it is that is supposed to be
in that directory....

It's basic base ;-)
Bin, doc and compat, but the installer will help you build and configure
a command line chat script dialer and once you get the Midnight
Commander file manager and get a lynx browser it's kind of fun to do the
rest. debian.org is the place to start.

Your serial port may not be set up correctly since pppd is timing out
waiting for an "OK" from your modem. When you run "cat /proc/interrupts"
do you see the IRQ for your modem? Do you see your modem when you run
"cat /proc/ioports"?
Another thing that has bitten me in the past: Does your modem actually
return "OK" or does it return "Ok" (or possibly "ok")?

If you edit the /etc/lilo.conf (asssuming you are using LILO) to use
"lba32" (as in LBA32..in case the fonts make that confusing) instead of
"linear' (the default), it may work.
It worked for me.

Yes there is. Actually there are more methods than just one.
If your BIOS is new enough, upgrade LILO to a version 21.4.3 or above.
Install that, (READ THE MANUAL!) and run /sbin/lilo to write to the MBR.
If you have a windows installed (95/98/me) you can also use loadlin.
And then there are other bootloaders, like NUNI, GRUB etc.
Search and install I'd say, and next time, think before you partition. This
limit is in no way related to linux, but to your BIOS. No OS can boot from
there in an ordinary way.

Look at /etc/XF86Config. There's the pointer section defined which refers to
your mouse. Alter at will after reading the manpages

So you mean {x,g,k}dm is running?
change the default rnlevel in /etc/inittab from 5 to 3
Now you need to start X manually each time you want to use it.
try `startx`
xdm (and gnome/kde equivalents) cannot be killed by you.
You start runlevel 5 for this feature. The fact that it is a feature you
don't want, means that you should read up on this stuff: you don't know
enough of this stuff yet. Have fun :-)

the rpms from kde.org, but sudo rpm -Uvh *.rpm returned an error saying
qt-static needed qt-devel. So I got the qt-devel rpm, and retried with a
bunch of errors about the new version of qt conflicting with a previous
version. But that's what the -U is for, right, to upgrade? Frustrated, I
added a --force, and to my eyes, everything works.
Any of yall know what happened? Are there any consequences to the --force?
Thanks in advance,

"32 Bit Crystal PCI Audio" means nothing. Post the output of "cat
/proc/pci" that relates to audio equipment, and someone will probably be
able to tell you what to do. I gather "sndconfig" didn't do anything?
If you haven't tried that, do so immediately.

It won't bugger up, but it may fail.
This latter usually depends on the question if your partition table is
correct or not. I can't tell right now. I could, if you post `fdisk -l
/dev/hdXXX`
But I agree with Peter T. Breuer, that it is far easier (And a better
solution IMO) to create separate partitions for several subdir's.

Subject: Setup from the scratch problem.
Date: Sun, 07 Jan 2001 00:00:04 +0800
Recently, I have been setting up a small linux from the scratch. I used
busybox's init instead of SysV's init. I am able to use the box as long
as I put in "/bin/sh" for each tty entries instead of "getty", but for
the tty entries with "getty", the machine always responds me with login
incorrect with my root login and empty password. I have configured the
/etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files with entries for root as root:x:(etc)
and root::(etc) respectively. (I supposed this is correct.). And I have
copied the files group, gshadow, login.access and login.defs, and
binaries getty and login, and the library libcrypt*, but still I am
unable to login to the machine through those ttys.
Although I think I can use a cd-rom to setup, I'd really like to
understand what mistake I have ever made.
I have read many man pages, but cannot figure out what I have missed
out. Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks a lot in advance.
Regards

My experience is that I have to use a floppy to boot the machine and run lilo
when the HD moves to another PC.

Has anyone been able to install Red Hat on a Mac under Virtual PC? I've
tried multiple ways, automatic disk formatting, manual disk formatting,
but the best I can get is "no valid system" on the re-boot. The worse is
with auto formatting - the disk becomes unusable and has to be erased.
