Subject: Install doesn't load... Reboots.
Date: Sun, 07 Jan 2001 04:02:09 GMT

I have a CD of both Red Hat Linux 6.1 and of Linux-Mandrake 6.1. I've
tried installing both, but both do the same thing. After I boot to the
CD and hit "return" at the "boot:" prompt, I get:

  Loading initrd.img......
  Loading vmlinuz.....
  Uncompressing Linux OK Booting Kernal

Then I get half a screen of text that flashes to fast for me to read
and my computer reboots.

I've tried booting from both CD's, a DOS disk, and a Linux boot disk;
it always does the same thing.

Any help, greatly appreciated.

HP7200e is external
CD burner which uses linux sg driver for scsi emulation. I use following
modules for this
bash-2.04# /sbin/insmod parport
Using /lib/modules/2.2.16-17/misc/parport.o
bash-2.04# /sbin/insmod paride
Using /lib/modules/2.2.16-17/misc/paride.o
bash-2.04# /sbin/insmod epat
Using /lib/modules/2.2.16-17/misc/epat.o
bash-2.04# /sbin/insmod pg
Using /lib/modules/2.2.16-17/misc/pg.o
bash-2.04# /sbin/insmod pcd
Using /lib/modules/2.2.16-17/misc/pcd.o

when I try to scanbus I get the following error.

bash-2.04# cdrecord -scanbus

Didn't catch the original post but I did just upgrade from PHP4.0.3pl1 to
4.0.4. When I tried to do it with RPM's it balked, did it from source and it
worked perfectly.

Found a better work around!

Before switching from the Linux box to the Win98 one. I switch to another
console <ctrl><alt>F2 on the linux machine. When I switch back from the
Win98 machine to Linux I alone have to reset the KVM box and then
<ctrl><Alt>F7 to get back into my XWindows session still running and with
the mouse working again!

Hello,

The readme at dri.sourceforge.net doesn't list the xpert 98 under supported
hardware for 3d acceleration. Maybe this is why the DRI module won't load.

I'm not familiar with Dell bios but if it is there it should be listed as
something like Onboard VGA. Probably under soemthing like Chipset
Configuration.

I am running Slackware7.1. I recently upgrade my kernel to 2.4 and PPPD to
2.4. When I try to dial with PPPD, i get this:
" Serial connection established.

This only happens in 2.4 and not 2.2.16. Does anyone have any ideas?

As a non root user my ppp blows up with the KDE crash window saying I

No, 2.4 moves the lockd functionality into the kernel. So there is no
need to start rpc.lockd any more.

Please, please help.

Where are all the pcmcia wizards out there? Isn't this a simple thing
to fix?!? What's wrong with apt-get and how do I fix it?!? I'm
effectively stuck in slink 'til I get this sorted out. My next step
is to rely on backups and just install the new stable. Surely Debian
can do better than that!?!

What do I need to tell you that you'll be able to help me fix it?

hi,

i had a heck of a time getting my ESS1868 working with the newest ALSA.
I used to have it working fine with an old version of OSS and I think at
one time with an old version of ALSA. With this latest install on this
desktop I couldn't get sound to work using ALSA .5.10. I found out that
there was a kernel drive and read the docs for it. I found out my card
just uses the basic sb module along with uart801 or whatever it is and a
few other modules. Since my card was ISA Pnp I used pnpdump to get info
about it (i did this before finding out there was a kernel driver so not
sure if i needed to do this or not, it didnt say so in the docs so u
could probably get away with not doing it). I had to recompile my kernel
to make the isapnp drivera module otherwise i would get unresolved
symbols when insmodding the sb driver. After changing that along with
making all the right sound drivers modules and recompiling my kernel I
insmoded all the right drivers and I had working sound.

I'msure there is a kernel driver for the sb16 so read up on it and u
might get it to work like me with my sound card.

that's it. That's how i do it with ALSA on my laptop (even though the
driver for my chipset is buggy) and i'm pleased with it except of course
with the buggy driver itself.

check if /bin/bash exists, if not u need to install it from your RH7 CD.

When my netscape starts up it displays file:/usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html in
the location box. How does one change what is used for the initial location?

It says (exactly) the following, which doesn't contain my computer name
at all.

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain

But this is also precisely what it was before the upgrade, and I didn't
see this error before.

Subject: Installing SCSI HA, Tape & HDD after Mandrake 7 installation
Date: Sun, 07 Jan 2001 06:00:04 GMT

I've already installed Mandrake 7 and have used it for awhile with no
trouble. I chose the default installation, no intervention, etc. I'm
using IDE disks.

This is probably really simple for the experienced folks here, but
I've not been through this before: I want to install an Adaptec
154X-series host adapter to control a Conner DAT drive and an old
Seagate ST-series SCSI disk. I may want to add a couple more SCSI
devices later.

The adapter POSTs, and I can "see" the three new devices (terminated,
etc.) when using a small "troubleshooting" utility from a DOS floppy,
but my OS doesn't appear to know they are there.

I'm neglecting to do something first, but what is it? Do I need to now
add SCSI support to the kernel, or to load a module? I've never done
this, so where would I find the info I need?

TIA,

Cole
