First of all, are you sure your using a telephone cable?? If so, try using a
standard ETHERNET cable, most likely you will want a crossover cable if you
are connecting two machines directly.

I've got the tulip driver from source forge:

The 1.1.0 driver seems to work fine for me in both 2.3 and 2.4.0

Hi,

Everyone else has mentioned that you need a hub or cross-over ethernet
cable. Just to explain..

Network units are connected in a star topology - with a hub or switch in
the centre. These ethernet cables can be refered to as 10baseT, twisted
pair ethernet, CAT5 or CAT4 or RJ45 - each referes to different standards
(wire, plug etc.) but are often referred to as the same thing.

Now, buying a hub to just connect 2 cards is a waste so you can use a
crossover ethernet cable. This has had the cores rewired to simulate the
connections made withing a 2 port hub - make sure you use one of these
rather than a regular twisted pair.

Subject: Dual boot problem??
Date: Mon, 08 Jan 2001 02:49:11 GMT

Hi,

I have LM 7.2 installed along with Win95. My windows does not recognize
Linux partition and is reporting the C drive size wrong ( probably C: + hda7
of linux?). Still everything was fine until something happened. I am not
sure if it was due to the Defrag I ran on C drive.

But when I started Linux it said /dev/hda7 not clean and forced a check.
Check ran for a long time with report of wrong inode, size errors on Blocks
etc.. etc. and finally Dropping me to shell. I ran 'e2fsck -b 8193 /hda7'
and finally hda7 came clean.

But now now when I start Linux it hangs while booting while stating
"/etc/rc.d/xyz.. and /usr/xyz.. not a valid file....". Booting in safemode
hangs stating "INIT: Id 'x' respawing too quickly, holding(?) for 5
minutes".

So in essence I am not able to get into the system at all. While
reinstalling is not a big problem as I dont have any data in the system, I
want to know why it happened and avoid it happenning again.

Thanks & Any help is appreciated
Sri

Greetings
I am tring to set up a basic firewall for my Mandrake linux system. I
have set the default chains to be: output ACCEPT, Forward ACCEPT and
input DENY. I have set input on the localhost to ACCEPT and input on the
ethernet card to ACCEPT and have created new chains called ppp-in and
ppp-out. I want to provide a firewall only for the PPP chains. I do not
want to provide any servers to the outside. I want to be able to share a
directory for Napster and just run the normal client software and block
anything else. I just use a normal dial-up connection to the net. If
anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Subject: Printing woes
Date: Mon, 08 Jan 2001 14:04:26 +1100

Greeting all
Why do some distributions insist on allowing only one type of printing
system in their linux version? I use Mandrake Linux for my workstation
and RedHat Linux for my server. Mandrake uses the CUPS printing system
which works fine for a locally connected printer and also works fine for
a printer connected to a remote computer, but try as I might (for two
months) it will not work with one of those small printer server boxes!!
I tried to remove CUPS but Mandrake had dependancies in a whole host of
other programs that relied on CUPS. I eventually removed all of them,
downloaded the source code for all of them (as well as LPRNG printing
software) compiled them all, setup LPRNG and tried it all out. LPRNG
works perfectly on my system and now after about 2 1/2 months I can use
my printer. CUPS would seem to be not quite complete as yet and until
they have their network printing sorted out, I certainly won't be using
it again (no matter how involved it is to do otherwise). My RedHat system
comes with LPRNG although it installs LPD by default, so I had no
problems with it at all.
If anybody is also having problems with CUPS, try LPRNG it's great.

I will look into this...

I believe the re-install I performed was an "upgrade" without
installation of any new "packages", as you described, but I was not
given an opportunity to specify new passwords.

However, I may have overlooked this in my haste.

Am I better off moving my user data to an ancillary drive, and
then re-formatting, re-partitioning, re-installating, etc. ?

Did the intruder exploit a defect in [Red Hat] Linux, or was I simply
too lax?

I also have TurboLinux 6.0.4 and could presumbably convert, to avoid
repetitions of this incident.

Well, or buy a new cheap ne2000 compatible clone, I've used both lots of

Have you tried recompling the driver? I had to do that on a few distros

I make a /, /boot, and a swap partition. Other people make those 3 along
with a /home and maybe a /opt for where most of your programs may be
stored.

It's up to you but I'm happy with /, /boot, and swap but giving yourself
more eases a reinstallation process as you only need to reinstall some
partitions.
