It actually works fine, but you need to have XFree86-4.0.2.

Which is recent enough that no vendor has done a release with it yet.
Expect mandrake 7.3, RH 7.1 and SuSE 7.1 all to ship with it working
off-the-CD.

In the meantime I suspect that you need to install in text-mode and get
the 4.0.2 tree by hand. Inconenient, I agree.

Hi,

I own an old SparcStation2, which only has 2 hard drives and a cdrom. It
has no floppy drive. I have 2 Debian 2.1 cds, but I can't seem to boot
off either them. I was wondering if there was an image that I could burn
to a cd to boot off of. When I try to boot off the Debian cds that I have
I get an error that says "Bad magic number is disk label", so I'm not sure
if that means the label on the cd isn't what it should be, or if the cd
isn't bootable.
Anyways, if someone has some suggestions on what I should do, let me know.
Thanks

Subject: Booting new kernel (2.4) question
Date: Mon, 08 Jan 2001 20:51:35 GMT

I've compiled my new 2.4 kernel in /home/nwatson/tmp/linux and copied
bzImage to /boot. I added an new entry to grub so that I can still boot my
old kernel (2.2.17).

When I attempt to boot the new kernel I get past grub and the kernel begins
to load until it's time to mount the drives. The message:

EXT2-fs:  unable to read superblock.

Then the kernel panics and fails to boot.

I can still boot kernel 2.2.17 no troubles and I can still boot to win2k.

Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong?

Thank you,

Hi Scott,

In addition to my 1st answer I've another question: it seems I must use an
additional driverdisk which contains netstg2.img. However, this .img has
the size of almost 2 diskettes! Can you tell me how I can make this
driverdisk using the dd-command?

Thanks,

Not a single command AFAIK

What you should do is install the redhat package with the kernel
sources. Then read the /usr/src/linux-2.2.16/configs/kernel-2.2.16-i686.config
file. That will give you something like
        # Processor type and features
        #
        # CONFIG_M386 is not set
        # CONFIG_M486 is not set
        # CONFIG_M586 is not set
        # CONFIG_M586TSC is not set
        CONFIG_M686=y

If you want to use that as a basis to compile your own kernel copy it to
/usr/src/linux-2.2.16/.config.
Then you can do something like make menuconfig and read which options
are set and whether or not they were set as build in or as modules.

Well since there will be no display it won't need to boot to the
commandline, just to the login prompt is sufficient. All servers are
started before the login prompt is reached anyway.

edit /etc/lilo.conf and remove the lines with " delay, prompt, timeout"
and set a line with the default kernel to boot fi "default=linux"
run /sbin/lilo -v to update the boot record and reboot to make sure
everyting went ok.

I am trying to make a boot hard drive to boot from a
secondary IDE. My lilo.conf is as followed:

#boot=/dev/fd0
boot=/dev/hdc
map=/mnt/floppy/map
install=/mnt/floppy/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
default=linux

image=/mnt/floppy/vmlinuz
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hda5

Note that the same lilo.conf works for a floppy (just by replacing
the boot line to /dev/fd0). However, when I mount my secondary
harddrive to the same place (to minimize lilo.conf change) using:

mount /dev/hdc1 /mnt/floppy

The same lilo.conf will not work. All I get is an "L" and then
a bunch of 01 dump onto the screen. I also try to use "linear"
to no avail. Any advice.

Thank you for any help,

 My system stops at the "starting sendmail".
Could you give me any advice what's wrong and what i can do for this

Login as root and run Xconfigurator from the command prompt. It is a

Make sure xfs (X11 Font Server) is running:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs status
xfs (pid 683) is running...

If it isn't, then start it up:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start

And then try to run X11. It could be that you erased the 'fixed' font
by accident, in which case re-installing X11 from your Mandrake CD
will work:

rpm --force -i /mnt/cdrom/blah/blah/XFree86-3.3.xxxxxx.rpm

(the 'fixed' font is included in the main XFree86 RPM file)

I've never used 'grub', but it sounds like your new kernel doesn't
know which drive to boot from. A default linux kernel will try to
boot from /dev/sda1 (first SCSI disk), the last time I checked.

You can either:

  o configure grub to tell the kernel image which partition contains
    the root filesystem (ie, under lilo you'd include root=/dev/mydrive)

  o use rdev to tell the kernel image what drive to boot from

    rdev /boot/bzImage-2.4.0 /dev/mydrive

(substituting 'mydrive' for the proper one)

Don't forget you have to run the command 'lilo' after making
any changes to lilo.conf. This is because low level disk drive
device and offsets are stored in the resulting boot information.

Also, the mount of hdc1 to floppy might not help you much --
when you are rebooting, mounts done on the previous boot are
part of the forgotten past.

Better to leave the working, floppy boot, in place in your
lilo.conf, and then to add a _second_ "image=..." section
(setting a different label, and whatever else is different than
the defaults, such as root), then selecting that new label from
the "lilo:" prompt for testing.
