I'm a low-end intermediate win98 user, total linux/unix newbie, trying
to set up dual boot win98SE/Red Hat 7 on single HDD (20G).
Problem: Installation from floppy starts OK (see separate question about
cd boot). Proceeds normally to partitioning section. Under fdisk(DOS) I
have primary DOS partition (2G) and extended DOS partition with 3
logical drives (2G + 2G + 3G) - all using FAT32.
In the Disk Druid partition table this is shown as four separate
partitions, (hda1, 5, 6, 7). I expected to see 2 partitions (one for
primary DOS, another for extended DOS) but otherwise the listings are
the same as under DOSfdisk. I have another 11G left unallocated by
DOSfdisk to put linux into. The first partition (and I think the 2nd as
well) are created normally, and given numbers hda3 and hda4. Any further
partitions (no matter what name) fail to be allocated because there are
no primary partitions left. Space is obviously not a problem.
I am not ready to abandon my win98 and really like having 4 drives. Also
to put all of this into one partition will obviously be tedious. For
similar reasons I want multiple (at least 5) limux partitions. I can't
find any mention of this problem in the major HOWTO's. Can anybody help?
Many thanks
David

RTFM :)
According to the HOWTO:
5.3 Which 3Dfx chipsets are supported?
Currently, the 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics (tm) chipset is
supported under Linux. The Voodoo Rush (tm)
chipset is not yet supported.

You can set up software RAID (which is what the HPT370 uses anyway), check out
the how-to's at www.linuxdoc.org.

Well your error lies in assuming that . (your current directory) is in
your path. That is where bash and others look for commands. Type
/a.out and see what happens.

Subject: framebuffer + penguin logo but no LILO?
Date: Tue, 09 Jan 2001 07:30:41 GMT
I have a dual boot PC wherein the reiserfs partitions are beyond the
1024 cylinder limit, and therefore always uses a floppy disk to boot linux.
The floppy disk does not contain LILO either. After doing a kernel
compile, I simply 'dd if=/boot/vmlinuz of=/dev/fd0 bs=512'.
So is there a way to use frambuffer / penguin logo at startup with the
above method, seeing that LILO is never involved during boot?
Thanks,
John

The problem is simple.
You cannot have more than four primary partitions.(hda1, hda2, hda3,
hda4)
Only one of these can be an extended partition (hda2)
Inside this extended partition, logical partitions can be created (hda5
and up)
If you want more, you'll have to grow your extended partition and create
new logicals inside.
A tool that can do this for you is PartitionMagic. This will cost money
though.
There's also a free alternative, called "GNU parted".

Help......can't get my Mandrake 7.2 to correctly config the USR 56k Voice
Internal modem (ISA). I know the modem works thru Windows. Tried setting up
different combos of IRQ, com port, and I/O in Linux as well as initiating
setup in BIOS. Best I could get was Linux to recognize and show the modem as
installed without conflict, but, fails to initialize and dial when prompted
thru KPPP or terminal window.
Is it just me or is there something I'm missing? Does anyone know if this
modem is even supported? Any help, advise, words of wisdom, or whatever
would be appreciated. I'm fairly knew to Linux but have a good computer
background.

Note that Linux fdisk numbers cylinders from 1. If fdisk is used, a
primary partition from cylinder 1 to 779 should be made.
The partition also can be recreated using these Findpart commands
(rasmus1.bat):
set findpart=edit
findpart 2 0 1 - 83 0 1 1 778 127 63 0 779 128 63 26force
findpart 2 0 2 - 00 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 779 128 63 26
findpart 2 0 3 - 00 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 779 128 63 26
findpart 2 0 4 - 00 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 779 128 63 26
set findpart=
findpart tables fp2-1.txt
To prevent errors, you can download the batch file from:
http://inet.uni2.dk/~svolaf/rasmus1.zip
Usually type 83 (same as ext2) is used for a reiserfs. The type 84 is
just a suggestion implemented in Findpart to distinguish from ext2.
I guess you should mount the partition read only, and check without
repair until it is certain that the partition table is correct.

Perfectly safe.
fsck doesn't need to be run regularly as the 2nd extended filesystem is
quite robust. If you are getting signs of file corruption, it will most
likely be a warning sign that the drive is about to die.
You can do run a fsck on a running system ; make sure no (important)
processes need to access the file-system, remount the file-system
read-only (if it complains that the file system is in use, use fuser to
find the process that uses the filesystem and kill it.) Best to go to
single user mode, run fsck and return to previous runlevel to minimise
the possibility of daemons dying, login sessions failing, mail bouncing
and databse failures. This might not work to wel on the root partition,
but others do work.
/bin/fuser -m /dev/hda1
/sbin/mount -o remount,ro /dev/hda1
/sbin/fsck -C -t ext2 /dev/hda1
/sbin/mount -o remount,rw /dev/hda1
No warranties, use at your own risk.
