This was my first attempt at upgrading the kernel. I started with Linux-
Mandrake 7.1 which was using kernel 2.2.15. During the installation, I
automatically configured a network connection using an IP I got from
Cox@home. I just upgraded to version 2.4 and my internet connection is
now gone. Any idea what I did? Also, I can't mount the floppy drive,
this was automatically done with the last kernel. But otherwise it works!

A "bug/feature" shared by all other unix and linux systems with sendmail
installed. There will usualy be a syslog message saying that the host
name is not fully qualified, and that is the reason for the delay.
Sendmail is hoping that when DNS becomes operationaly DNS can provide a
fully qualified host name to use. Adding a fully qualified alias to the
/etc/hosts file will fix. The localhost.localdomain found in /etc/hosts
on redhat systems is there for that reason.

If you are serious about Linux, make a swap partition as well.
They say the rule of thumb is that a swap partition should be
about twice the RAM. On some computers Linux may not work if
the kernel resides on a cyllinder > 1024, so to be safe make
sure that the Linux partition is on cyllinders < 1024. This
may be an outdated information, however.
If you are completely unfamiliar with Linux, it may be a good
idea to read an installation howto:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Installation-HOWTO/index.html
The installation should be easy. I saw 6.2's install, and it
was quite intuitive. Just be careful with the partitions,
make sure you know the numbers of starting and ending cyllinders.
I have installed Windows *after* Linux, so the following may
not be completely accurate. I have no idea whether RH 7.0's
install will detect W2K and make your machine dual-bootable,
or not. If not, you'll make it dual-bootable yourself under
Linux. There is a file /etc/lilo.conf . In it you'll describe
your configuration, something like
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
default=redhat
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=redhat
root=/dev/hda7
read-only
other=/dev/hda2
label=w2k
table=/dev/hda
!!! Note that these numbers hda2, hda7, are relevant to my PC,
on yours they will be different for sure! If you are not certain
about the name of the W2K partition under Linux, run cfdisk and
you'll see it, it is marked with "NTFS". After /etc/lilo.conf
is modified, run "lilo" and the changes will take effect.
Then reboot, and you'll have a prompt to enter "redhat" or "w2k".
It may be a good idea to have a w2k rescue disk, in case
something goes wrong. Also, make a Linux rescue disk after
running lilo. The command is mkbootdisk. With Linux you'll
always be able to make the w2k partition bootable, while
some Windoze flavours disable Linux booting in the MBR
_without asking_ . So, if you reinstall/upgrade Windoze
in the future and you don't have Linux rescue diskette, you
may lose your Linux.
Good luck,
Minko

I've resized ext2 partition with Partition Magic v4, v5 and v6.
The worst that I've had happen is that depending on which
partitions get changed and how, is that I've had to boot linux
from a floppy to re-run lilo before being able to boot linux from
the HD again. So, make sure you have a working linux boot disk
before you start.

That mini-HOWTO is not listed in www.linux.org.au/LDP. Anyway ....
I specified vga=ask in lilo.conf, and during bootup, after I was told to
press Enter, it gave me a list of modes to choose from ( all in hex )
with a number in front. The one that I chose is 0x309 so I specify
either the mode with the x, as in 309, or specify its listed number (
e.g.: 7 )
After that, mode did change to 0x309, but no penguin logo.
Does your post mean that the penguin logo will appear **ONLY** with the
modes specified below?

It worked. The boot part that shows me the "available video modes" was
misleading in that I thought those were the only video modes that were
supported, and none of those were on the list that you showed me here.
I tried 301, 303, 305, 307 ( which are 769, 771, 773, and 775 in decimal
), even though they were not listed in the "available video modes" at
startup, it worked.
Thanks,

Thanks for that. As I said at present the extended partition contains 3
logical drives using FAT32.
1. If I enlarge this partition (originally created using DOS fdisk) can
I use this space easily for linux partitions?
2. Does it matter to linux if only one (the extended) partition is
allocated to it, (and multiple partitions created within it). Will this
still be usable as a dual boot system?
Thanks again

Yes, but be carefull when doing this, normal FDISK programs aren't
capable of
non-destructive repartitioning. You'll need either PartitionMagic or GNU
parted.
Even with those programs it's wise to backup all important data before
you start.
> 2. Does it matter to linux if only one (the extended) partition is

In principle: No problem
But ensure the kernel image is on a partition that is entirely below
cyl. 1024
If you do not do this, your freshly installed linux may be bootable from
floppy disc only.
This depends on your BIOS though, but it's better to prevent the
problem, then to solve it.
Place LILO in the MBR or in the bootsector of the extended partition.
(The possibilities depend on your specific system)
Keep both a windows rescue disc at hand, and make a linux bootdisc
during install.
Have fun,
Eric
