Read http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html for background
material.
It involves building ide-scsi emulation into your kernel. Yeech!!! :)
I only build linux kernels when I absolutely have to such as supporting
my
sound card.
I found it easier to use the ide-scsi emulation modules. Here are the
instructions.
$ su -
password: <scret>
# # RH6.2 is conf.modules RH7.0 is modules.conf
# cp /etc/modules.conf /etc/modules.conf.bak
# vi /etc/modules.conf # use your favorite editor to edit modules.conf
Modify modules.conf for your CDROM writer, my CDROM is located at
/dev/hdc
Here is my conf.modules
# --- add this to your conf.modules -------
alias scd0 sr_mod
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
options ide-cd ignore=hdc
# --- end -------
# cp /etc/rc.d/rc.local /etc/rc.d/rc.local.bak
# vi /etc/rc.d/rc.local
# --Put this at the end of the rc.local---
# load ide-scsi module
insmod ide-scsi
#---end---------
# cp /etc/lilo.conf /etc/lilo.conf.bak
# vi /etc/lilo.conf
put the append statement for /etc/lilo.conf your cdrom
'append="hdX=ide-scsi"' and run lilo.
Here is /etc/lilo.conf, my CDROM is located at /dev/hdc
boot=/dev/fd0
timeout=100
message=/boot/message
prompt
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-6.1.1
label=linux
root=/dev/hda4
append="hdc=ide-scsi"
read-only
# /sbin/lilo
Now relink the /dev/cdrom to your scsi emulation of your cdwriter
# mv /dev/cdrom /dev/cdrom.bak
# ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom
Reboot. (I don't know how to restart with new conf.modules and rc.local
in linux :( )
Run dmesg to see if your scsi emulation is working after the reboot
# dmesg

Subject: linux install fails on CD-ROM init
Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 06:26:43 GMT
Hi All,
I have a new Compaq Presario 7000T computer with
a 75gig drive and 256mb RAM.
When booting linux mandrake v7.2, the
installation continually hangs at the "Installing
CD-ROM' stage, showing "in second stage install"
at the bottom of the screen.
I have a DVD-ROM drive and a CD-RW drive, and the
install fails on both in the same place.
Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Neal Miller

Hello,
I using XFree86 4.02 on RH 7.0 compiled from the lastest available rawhide
sources. No problems. They are available at:
ftp://ftp.valinux.com/pub/mirrors/redhat/rawhide
If you compile it from source yourself make sure you have upgraded to the
latest versions of glibc and gcc. For info on RH 7 bugfixes:

no problem for dd, but I never used any of these images, so no idea if
it wil produce usable diskettes.
dd if=netstg2.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=1k count=1024
dd if=netstg2.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=1k skip=1024
switch diskettes in between.

You should post the *full* output of `fdisk -l /dev/hdc`
I suspect that the problem is there, but as you stripped the important
stuff, I can't tell yet.
very likely, hda4 has the wrong partition ID

This worked for me in kernel 2.2.17.
In the file /usr/src/linux/include/linux/tty.h look for
struct tty_struct{
...
struct wait_queue *write_wait;
struct wait_queue *read_wait;
struct wait_queue *poll_wait;
...
};
and move ONLY the poll line to the end of the block, so that it looks
struct tty_struct{
...
struct wait_queue *write_wait;
struct wait_queue *read_wait;
...
struct wait_queue *poll_wait;
};
and then recompile the kernel. Good luck.

Hello,
from man procmailrc:
E This recipe only executes if the immediately preced
ing recipe was not executed. Execution of this
recipe also disables any immediately following
recipes with the 'E' flag. This allows you to spec
ify `else if' actions.
Try c instead
c Generate a carbon copy of this mail. This only makes
sense on delivering recipes. The only non-delivering
recipe this flag has an effect on is on a nesting
block, in order to generate a carbon copy this will
clone the running procmail process (lockfiles will
not be inherited), whereby the clone will proceed as
usual and the parent will jump across the block.
Good luck

Subject: Problems getting LILO to work after install....
Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 08:44:26 GMT
I have a question that I hope is a simple one to answer. I installed
RedHat 6.0 and during the installation I made bootdisk, and chose to
have the boot loader in the master boot record of my hdd. (there are no
other OS's on this machine) When trying to boot the machine for the
first time (and all subsequent attempts) a screen came up after the
POST and it said LI. Nothing happened after that. Just LI. I am able to
boot from the floppy backup that I made, but why can't I boot from my
hdd.
Thanks in advance....

I DONT want to download a huge 5-CD-set with useless stuff:
