2 items you may wish to consider:

 1) Adding the 'user' flag to the device options allows the user
that opens the device to have full access to it.

 2) You do have good permissions on /, /mnt and /mnt/cdrom,
    right?

Just a comment about Tripp Lite. I bought a BC 450 Internet because I
knew someone who used to work there and it started overheating and
tripping out as though the power was failing (it was not) fortunately just
before the warranty ran out. The warranty replacement (a newer model)
likewise began overheating and tripping out before another year. At that
time I was just using it for a single computer and monitor. On the other
hand we have one on a UPS box (as in United Parcel Service) at work that
has not had any problems even though it was totally run down once when
someone shut off the wrong breaker.

Since then I have been using what should be a light duty APC Back-UPS
Office to run 2 computers, a monitor and sometimes a laptop, and it is
cool as a cucumber with no problems at all. We also have an old APC 400
on our office network equipment, a newer 500 on my work PC and a bigger
one on our office phone system that have been faultless (except for
flickering neon power light on the very old 400).

I believe APC units come with Unix software, but we just have Windows (not
NT) at work so I have not tried it.

Ok,

I'm trying to get the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB working in Mandrake 8. I've
gotten everything seemingly running without a hitch. Modem synchs up, all
the modules load up correctly, but I get this when i run pppd:

pppd[1234]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests

the how-to only says that this means that the ppp daemon is wrongly
configured and is not sending data to them modem, but gives you NO steps to
correctly configure it. what could be wrong?

i'm so close i can taste it!

Hi,
I have been using my Linux box (Redhat 7) eth0 which is a local
address & eth1 with DSL static ip, and I have my own apache web server which
is hosting a web page. I used masquerading operations (ipchains) to share
my network with internet and its working fine... Now I need to set my email
server (email Anywhere) which is installed in Windows 2000 server, but when
I connect to my Linux server, using outlook I couldn't able to receive my
mails, but I 'm able to send them..and finally I found out that the port 25
is not been enabled to perform the task. Pls tell me how do I fix this
problem at my Linux box.

Thank you so much,

best regards,

Sounds like a hardware problem if the link light isnt coming on.

I have a Y2K-incompliant motherboard, and there doesn't seem to be
much hope in me getting an upgrade for the bios. Since every digit in
the clock seems unharmed when I start the system, except the year, it
seems as though a simple patch to second-guess the year on startup
would do the trick. That seems to be what some of these Dos utilities
do from the config.sys.
I'm a little surprised that I haven't found any documentation for a
problem like this one, which I'd expect to be common. Am I the first
one to think of such a thing, or is there another solution out there?

Think about this:

When your system starts, get the date. Then, if the year is "1980", change
it to "2001". Simple. Just can't remember how.

Well, the problem is, that both the controler on the motherboard and on
the SCSI card use the same IRQ and IO-addresses as default. To use both,
you have to reconfigure one of them to use another IRQ/IO-address. I
don't remember, if that is possible.

okay, so where is it?
/mnt/boot2/vmlinuz eg. (Note: I'm guessing here)
This must point to an actual kernel image, that can be read.
So mount /boot of the second linux on eg. /mnt/boot2
and correct the error.

mount /dev/hdb2 to /mnt/boot2 first.

Sure it doesn't.
You put lilo on hdb in the MBR, not in hdb5

> Again on hda I have one linux system, on hdb I have Windows(hdb1) and

Okay, then you can add this stanza instead of mounting boot2 too:

other=/dev/hdb
  label=chained
  table=/dev/hdb

Now rerun `/sbin/lilo -v` and see if that does it.

Usually presing CTRL/ALT/- or CTRL/ALT/+ you can change the
resolution of the screen. If you want to change it permenently
edit the XF86Config file or use whatever configuration tool your
distribution provide (usually XConfigurator). See also the
XFree86-HOWTO.
