Finally found what kept Apache from compiling. For those
interested, here's how to build Apache with SSL and PHP4:

Follow the "The Soothingly Seamless Setup of Apache, SSL, MySQL, and
PHP" at
http://www.devshed.com/Server_Side/PHP/SoothinglySeamless/print.html

Watch out: Whether using PHP4.0.2 or PHP4.0.4, there's no libphp4.a
library like it says in the documentation. Instead, just cp
libmodphp4.a libphp4.a.

Also, SSL_BASE=SYSTEM didn't work for me when configuring Apache.
Instead, I had to use SSL_BASE=../openssl.x.y.

Finally, even if OpenSSL is already through RPM (eg. because you need
it to access the host through SSH), you still need to compile the
source in eg. /tmp/openssl

HTH
FF.

I'm trying to figure out a way to redirect external web server requests,
via our firewall, to an external web server. I've tried using ipfwadm
with ipmasqadm/portfw, but haven't had any luck.

Here's the problem. Our web server, www.company.com is hosted by an
external provider. The machine company.com is our own internal machine.
What I would like to do is to redirect any requests on port 80 to
company.com from outside of the firewall to port 80 at www.company.com.

I know that if www.company.com were inside our firewall that this works,
but I can't seem to get ipmasqadm/portfw to forward the requests to an
address outside the firewall. Is this even possible? or is there another
way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

numbers)uses a driver that is identified by SMC91c92 or SMC91c92_cs
(not sure what is the difference). Where can I find this
driver with instructions for setting it up on Red Hat Linux 7.0.

Well, lilo allways assumes a IDE disk is coming first in BIOS if you
don't do the right entry in lilo.conf .
Try it with
disk=/dev/sda
bios=0x80
in your lilo.conf

There is a shutdown problem with Mandrake on a machine with an AT
type power supply. Mandrake seems to be set up as a default to
assume an ATX type supply that can be turned off automatically.

I think I fixed this by editing /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt to remove the
power-off option (I be may be misremembering what I did).

I have been trying to find a way to get a portable Linux system, and
since Linux won't fit on a single flopy disk and have many programs on
it, I've decided to make a CD that acts as a portable Linux system. I
would use it on the computers at my school, so it can't install
anything. I would just put the basic things like /bin/*, /sbin/*,
etc... I hope to be able to use the network as well which isn't a
problem. I know how to do everything except making the CDROM bootable.
How would I make an ISO image, and make it bootable.

Good question. The modem was bundled with the PC so it's guess work
basically. A similar modem is in the http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmode
m.html, but it says it is PnP but has no jumpers - but mine has so I'm
wondering if it isn't PnP. Also the chipset (rockwell) is a R6771-22
whereas mine is R6761-22. If that makes the slightest bit of difference,
I have no idea.

The modem is set up in Win98 on irq3 0x2F8.

I have a similar problem. My system came pre-installed with RH6.2 adn I need

on another machine) and complains that it can't mount it because it is an

What should I do to change the time to actually be EST?

Subject: Re: Caldera versus Red Hat
Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2001 14:18:24 -0700

I have purchased, installed and used almost all of the major distributions
(RH 6.2, 7.0, Mandrake 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, Debian, Slack, Storm, SuSE 6.4, 7.0,
and others). I have found good and bad points in all of the distributions,
Caldera included.

RH 6.2 probably has the broadest level of support with respect to finding
RPM's and software in general that support the distribution. It certainly
seems to have the most mindshare and I often see people who went to 7.0
moving back to 6.2. I have 6.2 on a seperate partition for testing purposes
and have a lot of good things to say about it. If you want to go with an
RPM based distro, I'd suggest RH 6.2 or (even better) eDesktop 2.4.

I have Gnome Helix installed on my Caldera system. I also have KDE1 and KDE
2.1 beta installed, XFree 4.02, ReiserFS, Kernel 2.18 (for USB), and Win4Lin
2.0 - along with a host of other goodies too numerous to mention. Setting
all of this up was very, very easy under eDesktop 2.4 because the compiler,
installation scripts, etc, all worked according to plan. The way Caldera
has written their boot scripts, etc, makes them very easy to read, debug,
change, etc. My experience with Mandrake was the exact opposite. When I
would have a problem in Mandrake, tracking down the problem with one of
their scripts often proved difficult if not outright strange. Anyway, I
digress...

Caldera is one of the smoothest and easy to customize distributions I have
ever used, with the possible exception of Slack - but Slack is a different
kind of animal so I'm not so sure a comparison would be accurate. If you go
with Caldera, you should have no problem installing Gnome / Helix, let alone
KDE 2.1, rolling a new kernel, installing ReiserFS, etc. The amount of
customization you can do is wonderful, which might be why a lot of VAR's
like
Caldera over some of the other distros.

Depending upon the application, RH and Mandrake RPM's tend to install on
Caldera without serious incident, and this may be important if you are less
inclined to roll your own stuff. However, excluding security updates,
Caldera
doesn't do a great job with providing updated packages, although they
did a great job (I think) with their KDE 2 update.

Keeping up with the latest compiler, libraries, etc, is a bit more difficult
with Caldera. You'll probably find youself over time rolling a lot of your
own stuff. But then again, isn't that part of the fun?

Caldera has been a very, very reliable for me, but my system is highly
customized now, yet I remember the stock system (when I kept it stock)
worked without incident. Keep in mind that reliability will also depend
upon your hardware as well, not just the distro you use.

I installed Gnome Helix without incident on eDesktop 2.4. Official support
from Caldera is pretty sparse, but I haven't had any problems installing and
using Gnome.

Yes and no. You are going to be much more on your own when it comes to
installing software, etc. More often than not, I've been able to use
Mandrake or RH RPM's on Caldera, but frankly... you'll probably find
yourself experimenting with other distro's RPM's or electing to compile your
own stuff.

I have RH7 on a laptop of mine. I like the Red Hat network, but it doesn't
do a whole lot more than grab the latest RPM's and install them. It is
handy, although I'm not so sure it's worth the $9.95 per month price (once
the eval period has expired).

Hi,
I made a backup of my /etc/printcap and then opened printtool and changed
my number of pages per output page from one to four. I then checked and saw
that the new /etc/printcap file had not changed. The printtool help button
mentions something about a fast printing option, I don't know if this will
help. It also mentions that it uses mpage to set the number of pages,
which does not seem to be working from within printtool. I also tried to
add mpage to the ghostscript options line but this did not work.

The mpage command does work on it's own however. For example, "man mpage |
mpage > /home/my_name/mpage.ps" will create a postscript file with default
four pages per output page. Then "gv /home/my_name/mpage.ps" will pop it up
in a display.
So you should be able to do what you want by doing something like "lpr <
mpage file_name"

Hope this helps,
Chip

Thanks. That worked.

Hey guys. I have a very annoying problem while installing my linux: the
kernel crashes in the middle of
swap formatting. I think it comes from the fact that I recently upgraded to
a more modern configuration:
AOpen k33 and Thunderbird 1Ghz. Do any of you guys have any experience with
running linux on that kind of
hardware? Am I doomed to being a Windows user?
Thanx!

I hope I don't sound too dim here, but what exactly does this mean? I've
seen references in other posts where people are still using this directory.

In the past when using 2.2, every time I upgraded the kernel, I would unpack
the source from /usr/src and it would create a 2.2.xx directory. I would
then 'ln -s linux /usr/src/linux-2.2.17' to this new directory, and go about
my install. Is this totally bad practice? What should I do from now on?

I did as the instructions say, I untarred it into a different directory,
/root and the tar file created a /root/linux/.... directory with the
source. I tried to install it from /root/linux, but that didnt' work
either.

I've updated all the packages it asks for, e2fcs, PPP, modutils, binutils,
etc, and verified that the rest were of sufficent release.

What seems odd about this to me, is that I've been using a test version of
the kernel (2.4.0-test11) for almost a month without one little problem!
The install of that kernel went off without a hitch!

Thanks for help.

Folks,

I need some setup advice. I had previously been running RH 5.2
(kernel 2.0.36) on a machine with a 6 GB hd (hda) and a 1 gb
drive (hdb). For reasons that I'd like to forget, I cannot go
back to that setup. As I write this, I am installing RH 7.0, and
have removed the hdb drive and added a 20 gb hd (hdb).

I have partitioned hdb into one large partition and gave it the
mount point </workgroup>. I kept all of the existing partitions
on hda. I didn't modify the partition table on hda for fear that
I'd lose the data on </home>. I formatted both harddrives except
for the </home> partition on hda. The object of this exercise is
that I want to give my users access to more diskspace without
losing existing files on </home>. I want the members of one group
to be able to access the </workgroup> partition as if it were
their individual directories under </home>.

Is there a way that I can make a seamless link between the files
on /home and /workgroup? Could I have modified /home to make it
larger without losing the files already there?

TIA.

Hello,

I switched from SuSE to Mandrake. Since that my internet connection
seems to be slowed down (newsserver, Netsacpe, downloads). The only
difference seems to be that I used wwwoffle with SuSE. But can this
speed up the connection?? How can I check / change the bitrate of my
serial device?

thanx for help
