For the wheel mouse, I use imwheel, but I do believe there are how-to's at
www.linuxdoc.org.
Don't know about the volume control buttons.

Subject: LILO fails to boot 2.4.0!
Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 09:27:31 +0000
I have compiled 2.4.0 on my Redhat Rawhide (Jan 4) system....everything
worked fine
and installed. I then updated /etc/lilo.conf and added a second
configuration for the
2.4.0 kernel and lilo -v correctly, the 2.2.16 boot is still working as
before.
When I boot 2.4.0, it uncompresses the image and detects some of the
devices
BUT it cannot mount the /root filesystem and therefor cannot access the
modules.
It gives a message saying to append proper root= option......well I do
have the
line root=/dev/hda9 BUT before that kernel seems not to be able to see
/dev/hda.
I thought this could be a devfs problem but I have DEVFS_FS not defined
in my
compilation.
Any help would be appreciated!

Subject: Help: LILO / Linux Mandrake 7.2 Dual Boot problem
Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 15:30:07 -0000
Hello all... I just installed Linux Mandrake 7.2 as dual boot on my Win98SE machine. I
have two physical HD's, C (13 gig) and D (20 gig) in Windows. I placed Lilo in the
boot sector of my primary HD (C) and installed Linux into a second partition created
on D.
Here is the problem: Lilo will successfully load up, and will allow me to boot into
Windows from the HD. However, if I attempt to boot into Linux from Lilo, the computer
reports something about my "BIOS not supporting the cylinder." I can, however,
successfully boot into Linux using the bootdisk I created during setup. This method of
booting, however, is pretty damn slow.
So, is there any way to rectify this situation? Do I need a later version of Lilo, or
is this a more complicated matter? I appreciate any and all help with this matter.
Thanks in advance!

Yes - try searching this (or any other Linux group :-( ) before posting.
It has been asked about twice a day for many years...... and I'm sure a

There is a really good site for Linux on Laptops
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/
It covers everything and more. The main choice is which Linux
distribution to go for. This is really up to you. I run Debain to dual
boot with W98. I used 'fips' to create big partition to put linux on. I
dual boot using 'loadlin'. Further information can be found in the
HOWTO's ==> linux.org etc...
Good luck.

Now that 2.4 is out with support for billions of users, what else must I
do to take advantage of this new capability? (I _have_ billions of users
-- well, okay, I'm actually about 400 shy of 65536, which for UID
purposes is as good as a billion, and my user base is growing at the
dozen-a-day rate, so this is about to become a real issue for me.)
I presume I'll need a version of glibc that knows about 32-bit uid_t and
gid_t as well as recompiled utilities. Or will I? What about the file
systems? It looks like 2.4's ext2 has support for 16 more bits, but what
else is needed to fully use this feature in the new system? I've got to
be ready to serve billions Real Soon Now.

I have compiled the 2.2 kernel and modules for my 586 including eth0,
raid0, and modules for ppp, and others. It works fine.
Now I am compiling the 2.4 kernel and modules and it compiles the kernel
but not the modules.
I have done this:
installed the updates for gcc 2.96, glibc 2.2 as per redhat
downloaded kernel source 2.4 from kernel.org and installed by directions
there
make mrproper xconfig dep clean bzImage and it works fine so far
make modules does not compile with the following errors:
error 1 error 2 error 2
and then it stops
Is there something that I am missing?

Go get 2.2.18. Maybe it's a bug that's been fixed by now. Even if
that doesn't do it, there are PLENTY of other bugs in 2.2.12 that have
been fixed by 2.2.18.

You can read the X FAQ. Or the manual page. Or the configuration file.
Don't do that if you don't like it. Some people complain if they don't
have a virtual desktop larger than their physical screen.

Sounds like you want to opt for a sw_cursor in the X options for your
driver, or stop using a USB mouse. You DID say USB, didn't you ...

Right. I understand that. I've said so in multiple posts to this thread.
Let me review the situation again. I have scripts that the SuSE installation
generated for smb, named, and mysql.
When I enter runlevel 3, they do not run. I can run the scripts manually and
they start up just fine. They do not log any errors in /var/log/messages.
I created my own scripts to run these services, linked them into
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d, and they do not run at startup. They also run fine when run
manually and do not generate any errors when they fail to run.
What is the problem? What can I do to get them to start up automatically?
I have read the instructions in /sbin/init.d on the SuSE boot process. I
understand the *philosophy*. The system created the scripts, and they don't run
at startup. I'm trying to diagnose why.

modutils upgrade and all the other goods mentioned
in the Documentation/Changes file. It is also a very
good idea to list the error you get. Else all we can

Yes, they were missing; that was exactly the problem. shutdown now
announces that it has sent a KILL to all processes, and umount starts to
unmount filesystems. Unfortunately, a difficulty remains -- while my
/root and /var filesystems are now umounting, /usr is not. For some
reason, despite the fact that a KILL has been sent to all processes, umount
thinks that the device harboring my /usr partition is busy, and hence the
shutdown process is still hanging at that point. This looks like the last
hurdle. Any ideas? (And what's up at Mandrake that they'd leave out these
symlinks?)
