I still haven't found the answer I'm looking for.
Again: I bought a U.S. Robotics PCI Fax Pro internal modem just so I
could install RH 7.0 since I've read that Linux supports the modem. My
computer came with a sinmodem which I quickly replaced with the above.
Any way the modem works well with win me but is located on com port 5.
My Linux doesn't read the modem what so ever. I've tried changing the
modem to a lower port but nothing seems to work.
again please help
thanks.

I have Slackware 7.1 (kernel 2.2.16) with no patches. Slackware apparently
comes with the raidtools (i.e. it has a mkraid command) but when I
try to mkraid a RAID0 (don't need redundancy; this is for a fast /tmp
among other things) mkraid says that RAID level 0 is not supported.
Is this normal (?!!) or do I need to get newer raidtools, or what?

The filesystem format you gave the hard drive is not used when you
install linux. Linux uses a different filesystem, primarily ext2.
Therefore you must resize or delete that partition altogether before you
install linux.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. I have a HD on IDE1. I have a cdrom and
tape on IDE2. I have a SCSI card with cd burner. Lines 10 and 11 of this fstab are
bad, but winD mounts so I can play my MP3s (Waste LINUX file space with those? Never!)
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
/dev/hda5 / ext2 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
/dev/hda6 none swap sw 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/fd0 /floppy auto defaults,user, 0 0
/dev/hdc0 mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,user,exec 0 0
/dev/hda2 /boot ext2 rw 0 2
/dev/hda7 /mnt/winD vfat rw, user, exec, conv=binary, umask=000 0 0
/dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2 iso9660 rw, user, exec 0 0
How do you attempt to mount the cdrom?
As su, mount /dev/hdc0 /mnt/cdrom or mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2
I created the directories within /mnt for them since Debian wanted it just /cdrom. for
the cdrom, it says the special device does not exist. For the scsi, it says it does
not recognize /dev/scd0 as a block device. Neither cd appears at all in the mtab file.
When you boot the

Mostly default. I added obvious stuff, like EMU10K1 support, serial and parallel port
support, etc. I also added the ide-scsi emulation module, as I have read that I need
this to copy cds from the IDE drive to the SCSI burner. From a good long look at dmesg
I suspect this is part of the problem, from the lines that say SCSI1: host adapter
emulation for IDE ATAPI devices SCSI: 2 hosts. I know that the cdrom is originally
found as hdc. The SCSI card is found, too, Adaptec AHA274X/, with 1 host originally.
An lsmod doesn't show anything of interest except the IDE-SCSI emulation module.

Yes. I've got a system with DOS, WinMe, Win2K, two versions of Linux,
OS/2, and BeOS all installed on one computer. In fact, I've written a
book about such multi-OS configurations (_The Multi-Boot Configuration
Handbook_, http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/), although basic
installation certainly doesn't require reading a book-length document.
There are several Linux HOWTO documents on multi-booting with various
specific other OSs. (Check http://www.linuxdoc.org for these.)

Hello there,
Your computer seem to have multiple processors. (SMP)
Here is the help screen information from "make xconfig" for Linux-2.4.0
---Starts here---
APIC (Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller) is a scheme for
delivering hardware interrupt requests to the CPU. It is commonly
used on systems with several CPU's. If you have a single-CPU system
which uses APIC, you can say Y here to use it. If you say Y here
even though your machine doesn't have APIC, then the kernel will
still run with no slowdown at all.
If you have system with several CPU's, you do not need to say Y
here: APIC will be used automatically.
---Ends here---
Can you try compiling 2.4.0 without APIC and see what happens?
Hope this helps,
Hari.

Hello,
Refer the following URL for CD-based distributions:

I guess few of them even offer ISO images which you can download from the
net.
Hope this helps.

In case anyone runs into the same problem, I finally got around it

When we booted off an SBM floppy, and used that to boot the Redhat CD,
it worked fine.

Followup:
For some reason, when I tried
make vmlinux
This time it worked. Of cousre, I hadn't tried "make vmlinux" with this 'new' set of
.config values, but in any case I finally got a Kernel working.
Now, if someone could help me with my second problem... :) (See next posting..)

During the RH7.0 installation, did you put a floppy in your computer when it
was creating lilo?
That is your linux bootdisk.
If you did not, put in your RH7.0 CD and perform an upgrade of something
small and existing (i.e. a game) don't perform a install when it creates lilo
get your floppy disk ready.
If lilo still does not install on your harddisk find out why using your linux
bootfloppy.
lilo: linux single
bash# lilo
I would suspect it is a 1024 cylinder problem, but RH7.0 has the latest lilo.

I recompiled the kernel and hard coded irq 11 to card->irq in trident.c.
Then the sound card works. My notebook could now play sound. But it
generates strange repeating beeps in X-windows, if the event sound is
turned on. I am still troubleshooting it.. Anyway, now I got my notebook
run fairly good with 1024x768 X-windows, with network card and sound
card work as well. My friends are all surprised when they see my
notebook running Linux.

As a test engineer who spends his life programming....
Nearly all super difficult problems boil down to one line of code.
The week it takes to identify this one line is the problem.
It's the 'almost done' assignment that takes all day. And then you
are done.
Or have to find the one line.
I work with a guy who spent a week tracking down a problem like
Subroutine ( ImportantVariable)
that should have been
Subroutine ( *ImportantVariable)
The moral is...
Find the line

Since when does the "1 extra FPS" crowd give ATI any respect
anyways? If you want to do some gaming in Linux you can use
Geforce, 3DFX and Matrox cards.

OTOH, the video for linux page has an "no-ATI" logo on it.

Using "modprobe" to load your modules rather than "insmod"

There is documentation on linksys.com regarding how to build
tulip.c. Why they couldn't just deliver a working Makefile is
