Hi there...

I'm a newbie and have somehow got KDE as my desktop. I want to use Gnome (an
emulator needs it...I think). How can I switch from KDE to Gnome?

Much thanks...

Thanks. That's what I thought, just wanted to check. Picked up Partition
Commander and it moved over just fine.

Each rc?.d directory contains a series of link to the "real" script
that start or stop each service. If the link is S.... the service is
Started, if the link is K... the service is stopped (Kill).

If a service is in 'S' or in 'K' in both the runlevel you are leaving
and the runlevel you are entering, the service is left untouched.

Usually the links have a sequence number that is used to fire them
in sequence (this prevent to start NFS before NETWORK...). So the
link is something like Knn<service> or Snn<service>.

If you want to turn OFF a service in a run level simply remove the
"S" link in that level, or rename the link to something that does
not start with an "S".

You can found a lot of information simply looking in some good
books about Unix.

It is looking for bits/error.h in "/usr/include..." so try making a link
from any missing directories in /usr/include to your new kernel dir's
something like
        cd /usr/include
        ln -s /usr/src/linux/bits bits
I did similar with mine but I don't recognize the "bits" directiey.
Although, perhaps it's related to your "pcmcia".
(just keep running make bzImnage till you get them all)

Hoep this works for you.

Ah, that explains my problems with the devices reporting the wrong major/minor
version numbers I was having. I traced it back to the modules missing
dependencies, but it was for silly things like strtok(). Turning off the
versioning finally allowed the modules to load and allow the 2.4 kernel to
work properly.

Hi:

I am responding to my own posting since it maybe helpful to others. I looked
long
and hard for an answer and could not find it. Since I couldn't use the
floppy to boot
Linux the next thing I could do was to boot with the Cdrom. Most modern
mother
board's BIOS's support booting from the CD so that shouldn't be problem. If
you
go to a site with a Slackware Distribution you will find an "iso"
subdirectory. In this
directory are ISO9660 images for CD's. The one called "install.iso" is the
image for the CD that is bootable and contains the slakware subdirectory.

The first problem is that image is +680 megs. Even if you have a Cable modem

connection this will take more than 3 hours to download. Once you have it on
your
computer as a file there are Linux uitlities to copy the image to the CD. I
did all
my work in Windows so I could not use them. Remember, I haven't setup Linux
yet !! There are several good CD burning utilities, one that comes to mind
is the one
from Golden Hawk, that will burn a iso9660 image to a CD. Once the image is
copied to the CD, it will become a bootable Distribution Disk. If you have
your
PC boot from the CDROM it will boot like the two floppy disk setup that you
would normal use. I did this and everything worked quite well. I still
haven't found an
HOWTO about LS-120 drives or how to boot with one; even though I have found
a lot of Mailing List post asking how to get around this problem.

Let me guess, large HD windows is more than 8.4gig on this HD? You need a
/boot partition (about 25MB) below cylinder 1024 (about 8.4gig or so). It is a
BIOS limitation.

Dear ALL,
we have lost the root password for the Free BSD system .
Did anyone known how to solving this problem ?
(e.g reset or restore the old one ) rather than reinstall the whole system
again ?
Now we can use original user to login the system
but i think we don't have users that have the same level with root
so we can't do any admin work .?
what can i do ??

When I want to get out of X I su to root and init 3. Probably other ways to do
it but this works for me. BTW I run Mandrake 7.02 and yes when in init 5 when
you try to "Quit" or "Exit" and "logout" it will go back to the GUI login.

Got the ethernet card working fine. The instuctions from Linksys were great
and a minimum of pain was involved. I' m still amazed I haven't been flamed
yet. Should have known better.

Regarding the video....

I thought I might be smarter to install the XFree86 4.0.1 software instead
of following the instructions from Intel on

I get an error in the /var/log/XFree86.0.log

blah, blah, blah
(WW) Couldn't open module glide2x

Need to have Glide installed ... and make a link.....

So, I'm guessing Glide (whatever that is didn't come with RedHat 6.0). Where
do I get it....

Thanks again.

Yes you can, however its is probably easier to add the server stuff to the
workstation install. I usually just install most everything from an expert
install. I run Apache, ftp, Half-Life Dedicated Server, Quake 3 Server, SAMBA
from this machine, but I also use it as a workstation.

Hi,
Boot into single user mode. IE. at LILO type linux s
This gets you full root access. You perhaps can upgrade on of your standard
users to root or copy a passwd/shadow file from another system.

If you need more help sign up to www.linuxfreesupport.com.

I guess I'll be trying Mandrake 7.1. It's worth the 30 bucks to not waste an
hour of my time getting the machine up and running.

I just can't believe all this trouble could be worth it. I've use linux
before and really enjoyed it and trying to use a great packages like GRASS
and MySQL are worth the small amount of pain trying to get the hang of *nix
down, but really dude, this crap about having to recompile the kernel and
such. Forget it, makes me still understand why Windoze rules the pc world.
Who says Linux is free (Time == $).

Thanks,
Jeff.

Yes, just make another account with UID 0.

>I know its a bad idea and I should just 'su' around

Yes, it is a bad idea. Don't do it. Newbie admins _always_ come up
with this idea sooner or later and it is still a bad idea.

Several ways. Make special groups to put your priviledged users in,
and make the necessary changes to file permissions. Or install "sudo"
and configure the commands each user can run as root. It can be set up
to not even require a password if a priviledged user is running the
command.

The big advantage of doing one of these instead of having multiple root
accounts is the audit trail, particularly if you have process
accounting enabled. All root accounts are equivalent because they have
UID 0, so they will all be logged the same. sudo in particular is very
good about logging exactly who did what as root.

You can find sudo through <http://www.freshmeat.net/>.

You could try guessing... There are ways to expliot buffer overflows
to drop you into root. I don't know any though =( From there you
should be able to change the root password. I don't know that much
about how to accomplish this but I thought you might want any known
alternatives. Good luck.

Subject: g++, cpp install problem
Date: 16 Aug 2000 01:22:53 GMT

I seem to have somehow messed up my compiler, and am completely unable to fix
it. I use a red hat 6.2 on intel system.

I have tried uninstalling, and then reinstalling cpp, egcs, and egcs-c++
from rpms with no dependency problems.

I get the error:

g++: installation problem, cannot exec `cpp': No such file or directory
make: *** [rsignal.o] Error 1

As far as I can tell the cpp is located at
/lib/cpp

How do I tell g++ where to look for cpp?

Why doesn't uninstalling, and then reinstalling the packages fix it? Or is
there some related package that I don't know about that could cause this?
Or why doesn't rpm -V show anything for any of these packages. I know
that I haven't changed my enviroment variables, so I don't know what
else could cause this king of problem.
