Subject: filesys corrupted after dual Win2K-RH7 install
Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 06:33:02 GMT

On a Dell Dimension 4100, 256 MB RAM, with Windows 2000 already
installed, I've installed RH7 (custom mode) with the configuration
listed below, and done the usual things to make the NT Loader permit
booting into Linux, too, so I was able successfully to reboot from the
Linux boot disk created during installation. But after going back into
Windows 2000 to do that side of the dual-boot configuration and then
rebooting into Linux, during the usual fsck "Checking filesystems"
startup, I got an error message:

  The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
  filesystem....

  :No such file or directory while trying to open LABEL:/usr/local

(The filesystems /, /boot, /home, and /var were reported as clean.)
Following prompts, I went into repair mode, used

  e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/hda9     [the device for /usr/local]

and apparently repaired the ext2 filesys on that partition. Next time I
rebooted, the same thing happened, but this time with another filesys.

The configuration:

Disk 0 - 45 GB IDE (IBM 75GXP, Ultra ATA 100)

hda1: primary, NTFS boot partition, 1.95 GB
hda2: primary, ext2, /boot, 16MB, completely below 1023 cylinder mark
hda3: primary, FAT, 267MB (for data exchange between Linux & Win2K)
hda4: extended....
hda5: logical, NTFS programs partition, 8.33 GB
hda6: logical, NTFS data partition, 3.44 GB
hda7: Linux swap, 267 MB
hda8: logical, ext2, /, 4GB
hda9: logical, ext2, /usr/local, 5 GB
hda10: logical, ext2, /var, 2 GB
hda11: logical, ext2, /home, 3.5 GB

Disk 1 - 8 GB Ultra-2/LVD SCSI (IBM Ultrastar 9LP)

primary 5.4 GB FAT32 partition for backup data
extended partition with 1 GB FAT32 for backup data

This SCSI HD is on an Adaptec AHA-2940U2W to which are attached also an
Iomega Jaz, 100 MB Zip, and 250 MB Zip.

All the partitions were created with Partition Magic 6.0 prior to a
clean install of Windows 2000 and, a couple weeks later, RH 7.

The RH7 is on CD-ROM purchased directly from Red Hat. Noting on RH's
web site the bug fix for anaconda, I did create an updates image
diskette and therefore used "linux updates" for the installation in
response to the lilo prompt. (Do the following mean anything: First, I
had to rename the downloaded image file to something else in order to
get /dosutils/rawrite to find it when creating the floppy. Second, when
in response to the prompt to insert the updates image floppy and did so,
the installer read it almost instantly -- this came as a surprise given
that the image was roughly 1.4 MB!)

During RH 7 installation, lilo was placed, of course, on /boot rather
than on the MBR. Also, I did not assign any of the NTFS or FAT or FAT32
partitions to mount points during the Disk Druid part of the
installation. After RH installation completed and I rebooted with the
Linux boot disk just created, I edited out of linux.conf the FAT
partition on Disk 0 and ran lilo before copying the boot sector that
became bootsect.lnx, etc. The dual-boot aspect of the setup seems to be
OK: I can boot into Windows 2000 still, do get the choice of Windows
2000 or Linux from the NT Loader, and an also select Linux and start the
boot into Linux -- until the filesys corruption stops things, of course.

During installation, I left the default Linear mode. (My BIOS does show
Linear mode enabled for the IDE HD.) But I previously tried the whole
thing withot selecting Linear mode and still got corrupted Linux
filesystems even on the first reboot with the newly created boot floppy
after ending the installation -- before I even got a chance to set up
the dual-boot.

The configuration shown above is the latest of a whole series of
attempts to get this going. On earlier attempts, where I had a FAT 32
logical partition above those Linux partitions in the extended
partition; the primaries were just the NTFS system partition, /boot, and
the Linux swapspace.

One other strange thing is that I did get RH7 installed on this system
before I added in the SCSI controller and attached devices, was able to
do the dual-boot, and had no corruption of the Linux filesystems.

I have seen a report advising not to assign Windows any partitions in
the extended, so as to prevent the very corruption I'm experiencing.
But I don't see how I can avoid that reasonably: I definitely need a
total of 3 partitions for Windows 2000 (system, programs, and data --
naturally neeed to keep data apart from programs, and have to keep the
Windows 2000 system partition small enough to squeeze in the Linux /boot
as a primary below the 1024 cylinder limit). Moving some Windows
partitions to the SCSI drive is not a viable option, really, because (i)
I want to reserve that for storing Ghost images of what's on the main,
IDE, drive; (ii) the SCSI drive is now several years old; and (iii) I
need to replicate the whole dual-boot setup to another Dell 4100 system
that has just one hard drive.

Unfortunately, I'm past the initial by-telephone installation support
period from Red Hat. During the above-reported attempt to get the
dual-boot set up before re-installing everything, the RH techie said
that RH does not support Windows 2000 (or NT) dual-boots!

I'm stumped! Any and all help would be most appreciated.

Subject: booting problem related to linux network demon
Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 06:53:58 GMT

I have used multi booting with linux and W2K.
Recently my computer had problem so i installed the W2K again.
Since then, my linux part has halted at some specific checking point.
So i reinstalled linux again. But the problem is the same as before.

For example in a normal booting procedure without interactive mode

"starting system.
starting keytable
starting pcmci
starting INET services.
starting lpd
starting key tablbe
starting sendmail

Sometimes, it halts at the sendmail.
(i waited more than 2 hours at sendmail or httpd)
By using interactive mode, when I skipped the "starting service
network part",
my system boots fine.

When i select the (Start service network (Y)/NO/Continue)(Y) meaning
that i typed "Y"
the following message comes,
"
Bringing up interface l0
Bringing up interface eth0 ,Determing IP information for eth0 operation
failed.
Start service portmap (YES./NO/Continue)(Y) ----> System halts at this
point.
"
(I am using DSL).

My computer, Redhat 6.2 seems to have the booting problem if network
demon is selected or started.

Is there any thing i can do for my computer except installing different
version of Red Hat such as 7.0 or other distribution?

Thanks!

Thanks to your advice, Julie, my problem has finally been solved. I've
learned a lot along the way (e.g., building kernels), but am glad that I
can move on to other things.

What worked for me was to patch 2.2.16 with the HPT366 update (uses
ide.c version 6.30) and serial 5.05. Now I can also boot directly from
my UDMA66 HD!!!

Basically, I am trying to understand how to setup IP masquerading in
2.4. I would like to know if there is a Netfilter/iptables IP Masq
howto? (There isn't one at LDP, that's for sure!).

I was running 2.2.18 with ipchains no problem. I have compiled all (at
least what I THOUGHT were all of the related IP masq, iptable,
ipchains, netmasq, etc.). I am able to run ipchains successfully with
the 2.4 ipchains module. However I totally do not understand
Netfilter/iptables.

I have read, read, and re-read all of the documentation at
http://netfilter.filewatcher.org/. That's all fine and good if the
kernel has been successfully compiled with the appropriate
requirements, but nowhere have I been able to find documentation that
explains what the hell needs to be compiled!?

As I mentioned, I compiled practically every related IP masq type
option as a loadable module. I can load up ipchains and run just fine
with that. However, when I try to load any iptable related module, I
get the following error:

================

[root@zorak /root]# modprobe ip_tables
/lib/modules/2.4.0/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o: init_module:
Device or resource busy
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,

/lib/modules/2.4.0/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o: insmod

================

Can anyone help?

Thank you,
Tony G.

Fu,
   I recently fixed a problem I was having with both the sound card and
network card on my new linux box and you may be having the same
trouble. It could be a problem with IRQs not being assigned properly.
Take a peek at the file /proc/pci This tells you the IRQs and I/Os etc
of your pci devices. If this is the case, you are in good shape,
because you can tell whether there is an IRQ conflict or if one is being
assigned at all. If there is not one listed, it is probably not being
assigned. If this is the case, wander into the bios and look for a
setting for PnP OS support. If you have (had) Windows, this is probably
set to Yes, set it to No. Don't worry, if this is a dual boot, it won't
screw up Windows, it should work just fine, and if not, you can always
change it back. Hope this helps. If it is an IRQ conflict, here is the
page that helped me figure out the problem and fix it:

Hi all,

  I have this peculiar problem replacing grub (Mandrake 7.2). I want to
remove grub and install lilo instead. I always used lilo. Now, lilo is
there in /sbin/. So is the lilo.conf in /etc/, as you can see:

[root@the_machine /etc]# ls -l lilo.conf
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root          320 jan  9 07:15 lilo.conf

But when I'm executing lilo it reports the following:

[root@the_machine /etc]# /sbin/lilo -C /etc/lilo.conf
/etc/lilo.conf: No such file or directory

No matter how I execute lilo it always reports that the lilo.conf file
(which is there) is not there.

Here's the lilo.conf file:

[root@the_machine /etc]# cat lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
vga=794
default=linux
keytable=/boot/us-latin1.klt
lba32
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
other=/dev/hda1
        label=dos
        table=/dev/hda
other=/dev/fd0
        label=floppy
        unsafe
image=/boot/vmlinuz
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hda14
        vga=788
        read-only

What gives? What is there to do to install lilo in this case? Any
suggestions appreciated.

I've succeeded in compiling the 2.4.0, and everything is working just
fine--even my scsi Zip drive--expect that the new kernel removes the
mouse while checking for new hardware.

The mouse is a Logitech 3-button First Mouse, but it only ever worked
as a Generic 3-button Mouse under kernel 2.2.12-20.  It has a 9-pin
PS/2 connector plugged into a serial adapter plugged into ttyS0.

I've recompiled several times, gradually adding into .configure
everything that even remotely resembles a serial device, but to no
avail. The information from /proc/interrupts, /proc/ioports,
/proc/devices is the same whichever kernel I boot to.

I'm not running any modules at all, but I have tried compiling with and
without doing "make modules" and "make modules_install."

Any hints for this relative newbie?

Cheers,
