- Boot your system from a rescue-CD/floppy;
- Now you have a running Linux without any HD-partitions mountet
- prepare the destination partionen (fdisk, mke2fs, ...)
- mount source-partition and destination-partition
- copy the content using tar, cpio+find, dump or whatever you like
(The choosen method must be able to copy special-files).
There are no hidden files in linux.
- repeat until all partitions copied.
- run lilo with appropriate flags (man lilo).

What version of Samba are you using? I had similar problems until

this is the PATH of root! Try not to work as root by default. You're
bound to mess up good someday. And as root messes up, you may well run
it to big trouble! Make a user and work as that user!

swap the definition if you want a path to come first:
But don't do this for the root user!!,
leave /sbin as the first place to look!

  PATH=$HOME/bin:$PATH

Try looking in /etc/profile or /etc/bashrc
It'll most likely be in one of these

As I said before, do not change this for the root user.
You should create a normal user (adduser belmore)
and work as that user.

This has worked for me, but now I need to restore the defaults for

Assuming these workers are all in-house, what you're saying is that the
mail is going to a variety of external ISPs, then back to the Linux
server you maintain. This should work, but puts an unnecessary load on
the external ISPs' mail servers. It'll also fail should there be a
problem with the remote ISP, and opens the possibility that somebody at
said ISP, or at an intervening site, might snoop on your e-mail. You can
adjust it or not, depending upon how serious you see these problems as
being. To adjust it, you'll need to do two things:

- Configure your Linux SMTP server to relay mail from your internal
network. ***THIS IS EASY TO MISCONFIGURE SO THAT YOUR SYSTEM CAN BE
ABUSED BY SPAMMERS!!!!*** Do it right, so that the system accepts
relay mail from your internal domain ONLY, not from randomly-selected
systems. Precisely how to achieve this depends on the SMTP server
you're using, which varies from one distribution to another.
- Configure your client systems so that they send mail via the Linux
box. This will only work AFTER you've configured that box to accept
  local mail relays.

If your employees are working at home or some such, then it doesn't
really matter what mail server they use. Mail will get to you a little
more directly if you accept it directly from your employees, but unless
THEY run their own mail servers, the only way to do this is to have them
set up your server as their SMTP server. This shouldn't be an issue for
mail addressed to that system, but for other mail it won't work, unless
you open your server's mail relaying capabilities to the point where it
might be abused by a spammer. Therefore, if your employees are off-site,
they should continue using their own ISPs' mail servers for their
outgoing mail (including mail destined for your Linux box). This is true
even if they check the accounts you maintain for them via POP, IMAP, or
whatever.

In Redhat 6.x and Mandrake, I would recommend putting the modprobe
instruction at the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local
In other distribution of linux, it would be similar.

You REALLY shouldn't run X as root at all - log in as a user and su for all
tasks that require root privileges.

If you really want to live life on the edge login as user, do "su", remove
the X default files in /root/, and try again. But this is not recommended,
so don't say you weren't warned if something goes wrong...

Sorry I screwed up... The dhcp client is the crappers in RH and some other distro's I
had to use: PUMP in RH is silly and dhcp client 2.0 is not much better to add insult to
injury last I looked the Linuxdoc.org won't treat this seriously into a good how-to.
they enmbedded it into another one (I think its howto-IPMasq or how-to firewalls)
inside
one of em is how to set up the dhcp client and which one preferably to use:
My preference is:
dhcpcd-1.3.18-pl3.tar please search for the first 8 characters on google.com or
whatever
and use it. My experience is install it into /usr/local/src, extract, install, read the
above hot-to's and edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup and find the right lines to
edit (it been 6 months since I played with mine and I really can't remember where I
made
the changes in the file. I hope this helps and if I did wrong then please let me know.

I am trying to get Informix up and running on Linux 6.2.

I have partitioned a disk and used mkfs to build a filesystem, I get dupfd
errors in the /var/log/messages whe I try to run the informix
initializaiton.

I am not having any luck in finding out what the dupfd (duplicate file
descripter) message is allabout, but suspect that it has something to do
with my preparation of the partition. Does anyone have an idea what the
issue might be?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I am preparing to buy a CDROM rewriteable. In theory, I know that
just about all IDE and SCSI CDROM rewriteables should work with Linux,
but I've seen that some people on this newsgroup have had various
installation problems. If you have a working CDROM rewriteable, what
products are you using ?

FYI, I run Redhat 5.2, and I am leaning toward purchasing a SCSI CDROM
rewriteable. I would like to be able to copy files from my present
SCSI 32X Teac CDROM drive to a CDROM rewriteable drive.

Thanks,

Subject: Setting Screen width under Vi
Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 10:21:09 -0500

I've been struggling with a Debian distro (2.2, Potato) and it
partially installs. I can boot Linux from the drive, login, and run Vi.
During the automated install from the rescue disk, it is accessible, and
the install proceeds. But when it comes time to install the packages,
the /instmnt/debian that worked to get the 2.2 archive won't work. The
install apps (apt, dselect, dbootstrap, ..) will not see the Doze
filesystem on c: (sdb1).

System is a 9595-ONT (microchannel, that's the reason for Debian)
sda is a 2.25GB SCSI drive. (ID5)
sdb is a 230MB MS-Doze drive with the archives. The files are in the
root partition, sda1. (ID6)
I don't have to worry about setting the SCSI order to ibmmcascsi=ansi
because of the ID selections. (got them where I want 'em)

I want to edit fstab and add /dev/sdb1, type msdos, and the mount point
of /dos. But Vi wraps the lines around on the screen, and Vi is
difficult enough as it is. (of course, mkdir /dos before so there is a
mountpoint)

Is there a way to set the display to a 132 column mode? (monitor is a
17")

What file do I need to edit? Or heaven forbid, is there a executable
that will configure the column width?

Subject: Help: Probme with Modem and Video Mode in new Kernel
Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 11:40:05 -0400

I have installed Slackware 7.1 Kernel 2.2.16 and got it up and running for
weeks. I installed it from the CD which I burnt with the ISO image file.
Lately, I have to re-compile the kernel for adding some options. However, I
am experiencing a lot of problems with the new kernel.

1. The internal modem on COM3 (/dev/ttyS2) fails to work. I have "resource
or device busy" every time I try to access the modem port. I did not change
anything on the hardware. The modem has been working with the old kernel.

2. The display mode changes from 800x600 to 640x480 and I cannot configure
it. In the old kernel, I can run "setup" and choose "configure" which would
allow me to select the video mode. But now the video mode selection does
not come up on the setup.

3. The KDE window fails to start by issuing "startx". The error message
related to the framebuffer of 800x600 or something like that.

Can anyone please give me some suggestions or I will have to blow it out
totally. Thanks.

Joe

Hi all,

I am succesfully running on Mandrake 7.1, got my DSL running, and have a
small problem.

I need to be able to run servers from my computer and want to be able to
connect to it from other omputers on the internet.

The problem is when I ping my ip address, (or telnet) my DSL modem
responds and does not forward the requests to the computer.

Can someone tell me if this is a linux setup problem or a modem setup
problem? I am not sure where to start to figure out what is hapening.

my DSL modem has all the parameters to log into the internet and how to
connect, there is no pppoe or anything like that here.

Any help anyone could give would be very much appreciated.

tia.

if the script is for the web, you need to add the line

print "Content-type: text/html\n\n";

immediately after the first line ie after the line:

#/usr/bin/perl --or whichever directory you have perl in..

Subject: Anyone running VT-320 terminals?
Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 16:03:56 GMT

Greetings to all!

I'm having difficulty building a working 'gettydefs' entry for a VT-320
hanging off a GTEK BBS-550 board. The problem appears to be flow control
(Xon/Xoff). Using the default DT9600, I have verified by-directional
communication. With a data analyzer, I see the terminal sending the
Xon/Xoff, but the driver doesn't appear to be handling them.

I've searched the HOWTOs and can't seem to find a solid discussion on the
serial driver or the definitions of the parameters to be used in the
'gettydefs' file. Can anyone point me to the docs? Does anyone have a
system with VT-320s on it who can help me with the configuration?

Thanks,
