Hello,

Add this to your .bashrc file in your home directory:

alias ls='ls --color=auto'

logout, log back in for the change to take effect. If you want to this work
for all users you can add it too /etc/bashrc.

Cheers,
        Jim H

Would like to use NFS install for this one, but the owner of the system I am
using for the source will not let me configure NFS.

All this is in the aim of getting Linux onto a laptop that has no CD and only
a USB floppy.

Thanks for the help.

Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 00:42:19 GMT

Hello folks,

I'm having a nightmare of a time geting routing to work right on my
RH7 box. Here's the story: I have a single 3c509-TP0 PnP cart (eth0)
that, after some careful config'ing, seems to load up fine. I added
routes for the eth0 interface, as well as the default gateway (see
below). I can ping my card, but when i try to ping outside, I get
the "network unreachable" error. The funny thing is, I can see my LAN
light on my DSL modem blinks (it lit solid in windows) with each
packet. Please note, this is not the DATA light, so it seems that the
packet make it to the modem but can't find anywhere to go after
that?!? Below is some of my data config, any help would be greatly
appreciated!

"Normal" priority SMTP messages don't usually time out in that short a
period of time. "Urgent" messages might, but if they're urgent, why
would the originator want them to sit on a secondary MX until you get
around to getting your server back on line.

I think I'd be looking for another provider if that happened more than
once. Of course, if e-mail is that important, a second connection from
another provider would fix the problem and give you nice warm feeling
of redundancy.

We all suffer from these problems, occasionally. Stopping the MTA
would have prevented any outbound leakage. Inbound mail could have
waited a few hours on the originator's servers until you had the new
signatures.

HTTP and SMTP are pretty different. Letting someone else host your web
site is usually not a bad idea since they've already spent the money
to harden (you hope) their servers.

Mission critical and outsourced don't usually go well together.

But your server being offline would be the equivilent of "all our
circuits are busy", not a disconnected number. :)

If you find that combination, let me know. Most are hard and
expensive.

I guess you haven't been reading all the problems /caused/ by ISP's,
then? I'll quote someone else: "All ISP's suck. Some just suck less
than others."

>Our ISP charges $25/month for the backup MX. In my book that's a nobrainer.

Most folks here can't even find an ISP that'll handle SMTP at all!

An even cheaper solution is to find another company (or whatever)
that's willing to provide that service to you if you'll provide it to
them.

I have Debian 2.2 installed on a Sun SparcStation10. after doing a clean
install, I tried to run my Xserver. well, it sorta started it up, but it
was just a white screen. I check the XF86Config file, and it was blank. I
tried running the CF86Config app, but it doesn't seem to be installed so I
tried manually configuring it with the example file that they include. no
luck. so I'm stuck unless I try to uninstall and manually reinstalling
without going through apt-get. can anyone give any advice or tell me what
to do? please respond because I have no computer right now except this one
(don't ask) and its driving me nuts having to use lynx all the time. cause
I can't check hotmail with it and I can't log onto ICQ or AIM without
XWindows. feel free to email me if you want.

best advice I can give you is to get SWAT up and running and go through the
options in the config and read the help text for each as you go. It really
DOES help alot!!

To get SWAT working you need to edit the /etc/xinitd.d/swat file and enable
SWAT... I had to reboot to get xinitd to recognise the change. There is
probably a much easier way of refreshing xinitd, but i'm still a relative
newbie and while I know how to do alot of hard things, some of the easy
things sometimes escape me...

Then http://host.domain:901 to your linux box using your web browser, either
over your LAN or locally from within Gnome or KDE and you SHOULD have SWAT
access - you'll need to log into SWAT using your root account/password. Once
you've done that, READ the offered documentation, go through the options one
at a time and READ the help text for each option. SWAT and the other editing
about MUST be done using the root account (until you reconfigure SWAT to
allow access from other accounts I guess...)

Happy Samba-ing!

Hello,

I only had problems like that with the wrong TERM, what says:

env | grep KEY
and
env | grep TERM

maybe the differ local/remote, then export them or set them system wide and
permanent in /etc/profile.

Hope this helps

I'm having a whale of a time trying to compile kernel
2.4 properly on a Red Hat 7 system. I've installed the latest
version of modutils (2.4.1). Everything proceeds well
until I do a make modules_install, upon which I get the error
message below:

I've compiled kernels before according to the standard recipes,
so this leaves me scratching my head. Am I missing something
obvious? What do I need to do in order to be able to compile
this kernel properly?

Yes it can work -- I'm doing it (because I couldn't get both Linux and
Win 2k on the same one HD without having Linux filesystem corruption --
due, apparently, to trying to put Linux AND Windows logical partitions
in the same extended partition on my first HD).

I have /boot as a primary partition on my 2nd HD (below the 1024
cylinder limit, of course) and then swapspace, /, /usr/local, /var, and
/home as logical partitions within an extended partition on that same,
2nd HD.

My 1st HD is IDE, the 2nd happens to be SCSI.

If you follow the instructions in the NT OS Loader + Linux mini-HOWTO,
you should be able to get the dual-boot configuration you want. Do be
sure during the Linux installation that you specify lilo to go on the
/boot partition and NOT on the MBR.

Hello,
I want to configure RH6.1 so that I can use
Cyrillic (Russian) fonts.
There is a HOWTO floating around by Belikoff;
however it seems to be really out of date.
The paths of some of the files are wrong;
some of the files I can't even find using a
`find / -name ...'.
I'm pretty sure that RH6.1 has the Cyrillic
fonts installed, since I can already read
Russian web pages in Russian. But I want to
be able to TYPE in Russian as well, so I do
have to do some configuration.
Is anyone aware of an up-to-date HOWTO or
FAQ out there?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
