I answered my own question, my graphic card can't do 1600x1280 or
1280x1024 at 32 bpp. this was causing the screwups. I set the monitor as
generic 1600x1280 that can do 76 Hz and the default colour depth to 16.
No problems now. Nice monitor!

Thanks for that. I think that I have recompiled the kernel scsi modules
correctly. I was really fishing to see if anyone else had experienced
similar problems.

Subject: Kernel Panic: MBR Problem?
Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 06:15:03 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'm setting up my old Dell OptiPlex 590 to dual-boot RH6.2 and Win95. I
discovered that I only had 2G of my 30G drive set up for Win95 use and
consequently set about to re-size the RH partitions. Being wholly
unsuccessful using partition magic (attribute it to being a newbie at
this I guess), I decided to wipe all the partition tables using dos 6.2
fdisk and RH fdisk. I now get the following:
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=03:05, iso_blknum=16, block=32
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05
I'm almost positive that I really fouled up the MBR or something related
to it during my fdisking, but don't know where to go to sort out what to
do next to resolve it.
Any advice, etc. is greatly appreciated.
Tia,
Brian

Run dos fdisk /mbr and then use linux fdisk to make your partitions.

Thanks for your help guys...
I had a brain fart (too late unfortunately - I finally got sooo pissed that
I backed up the files that I needed, and did a full re-install!)
Guess what, SAME PROBLEM! That's when I had the idea - DOH! I'll give ya
a hint...
I'm using the MBR record of hda for lilo.
For some reason, it was having problems with the raid MBR. Oh, well... A
few more hours of downloads, compiles and configuration and I'll have it
back to where it was 3 days ago!
Thanks again!

The /boot partition of RH must be below 1024 cylinder,
Remove your logical and extended partitions and use linux fdisk to make new
extended partitions with /boot below the 1024 cylinder. You must have /boot,
/, and swap.

Subject: kernel 2.4.0: xterm only works for root
Date: 18 Jan 2001 06:38:34 GMT
Hi,
I've successfully compiled and installed kernel 2.4.0. Everything works fine,
except for one irritating problem: xterm won't work for any user but root. When
I start xterm (or gnome-terminal for that matter) I get this message:
There has been an error while trying to log in
The message also says that if I'm running 2.2.x kernel, it might be something
to do with the wrong glibc version, but since everything runs OK as root it
sounds to me more like an authorisation question. But of what? Both terms have
rx rights for users. Also, both terms work fine with kernel 2.2.16 and 2.2.18.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Edwin

I've been using isdn for a while (RedHat7, kernel 2.4.0) without problems. Now,
I've enabled autodial and dial-on-demand and when I log in, no site beyond my

connect: network is unreachable
Everything works fine again when I switch to manual dialing again and reboot.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

The "Permission denied" message is because your not running the command
as root.
I get the same "rpm database cannot be opened in db3 format ..."
message (not because of permision denied), when trying to "make test"
on perl-RPM. All db3 rpms installed. Rebuilddb doesn't convert to db3
format. In fact, I have db1, db2, and db3 packages installed, and still
no luck. Still haven't figured this one out. :(

If I understand you correctly, you
a) don't start GPM in your startup scripts
b) logged in as root and successfully used GPM to access the mouse
c) logged in as a user and were not successful in starting GPM or using
the mouse
In Slackware Linux, GPM is always started by the startup scripts (IIRC,
/etc/rc.d/rc.gpm which is invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.M). Since startup
scripts run as root, this means that the GPM daemon runs as root and all
is well.
Perhaps you need to update your startup to include GPM.

This is because your system handles X mails all with the same header
which all cause a match with the same rule... Try giving each user
her own .procmailrc, that should take care of your problem.
