Anyone know if a linux driver exists for an RCA cable modem?
If not, can my Linux partition share the cable modem driver on my Windows ME partition?

How do I access my Windows ME partition from my Linux partition?
When I partitioned the drive with Disk Druid, the mount point for Windows ME (WIN95
FAT32) was "<not
set>". I tried to edit /etc/fstab but I'm not sure of what to say. I originally added
"/dev/hda1 /mnt/winme fat32 noauto,rw,user 0 0"
but that didn't work. Next I changed that to
"/dev/hda1 /mnt/winme vfat noauto,rw,user 0 0"
which didn't work either. Needless to say, "mount /mnt/winme" didn't work.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Patric

Hello.... just wondering if the following is possible under 2.2.... I need to
have "pool"of IPs availible for masqing only when communicating with
a specific subnet. If the packet is not going to the special subnet then
it doesn't get one of those masq's, it get's the "default". But when
someone opens a connection to the subnet, they need to "lock" the ip
until they disconnect (Ideally users would get connection refused
or the like). Any Ideas? I know this should be more than possible under
2.4, but I am working with embeded systems (x86 based), and 2.2 is the
only kernel that's been ported to them and tested....

I have also setup an old 486 as a router/gateway for my home ADSL connection.
I found that I needed to tell the install proggy the irq and io for my NICs
since it
doesn't seem to be able to autoprobe for them - at least not on my old MB. Just
check the box to supply parameters when you select your NIC driver. Then it
gives
you a screen to type them in.
Once installed you have you have to edit /etc/modules.conf and add an 'options'
line
with the irq's and io's. Mine looks like this:
alias eth0 ne
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x300,0x320 irq=5,15
[...]
Check out the ethernet-HOWTO for more detail

I'm new to linux. Is it possible to reinstall the boot

far the only way to boot linux is from the "floppy".

Max, I'll say regardless which Linux system you eventually decide is
best for you, in my opinion the best place for you to start if you
haven't already looked in that direction, would be http://www.debian.org
and just browse all the install manuals and howto docs. If you're
looking for a truly free system, and can't afford or don't want to
invest in a commercial partitioning software, and I guess whether you
even can is dependent on what format you have your windows drive in,
It's been a while since I split a disk with fips or Partition magic, but
anyway, the latest free fips software can also be obtained there.
You can download all the tools you need from there I imagine for free,
and the entire Debian system can be installed by simply downloading the
bare base system and installing it from a DOS or Windows partition or
off a set which will consist of 17 floppies after you write all the
chunks to floppy, or you can burn the install to CD and go that route.
Once you get the base installed, you can learn the ins and outs of using
the Debian dselect or apt-get applications and gradually pick and chose
additions to your system.
Or, if your Internet connection is fast enough to make it feasible, you
can get the iso image for the entire install and burn it to cd.
There is a pretty concise list of supported hardware there also.
Not trying to sound snide, etc, but the main thing you will need to do
is make use of the help that is available, reading instructions and then
asking questions when you don't understand something.
Take your time. Plan your system.
I wish five years or so ago, I'd have made a post like you just made. It
may have saved me lots of hours of heartache and failure from trying to
do it all on my own by myself. ;-)

"But right now, for our database, for our app, RH 7.1 is truly a piece of
garbage." - I would say it's just not a feasible solution due to time
constraints and/or inpatients. Because if anything, it is not a "piece of
garbage".
"Well, I know somebody may think that RH 7.1 is a new 'OS' or major update,
that's why people needs to spend more time to learn it. First of all, it is
NOT a new OS." - Well what does it take to be a "new" OS anyway? I mean,
RH7.1 includes the 2.4 kernel doesn't it? Wouldn't that be something that's
fundamentally new? The reality is, a "new" OS is released maybe every 5
years with minor and sometimes major update's in between. At any rate,
stupid stuff to argue/debate over so I'll stop :-) Cheers!

No idea if this is your problem but I've had bad burned disks do this (mine
was a redhat 7.0 install on a laptop). try reburning from the downloaded
iso image (or download and burn if you have store bought ones) and see if
that works. I know 8.0 can work as I've been using this one for a while and
besides a few bugs here and there (bad cannon 8200 drivers for cups was the
main one I've had), it works fine!

What error do you get? Does the directory /mnt/winme exist? What does
'fdisk -l /dev/hda' show for its partition type?

Hi!
Well, it seems my lilo setup was really wrong.
There is no need to configure two lilo.conf files because if the first disk
fails the second is recognized to be /dev/sda after reboot. So you can do a
lilo -b /dev/sda -C /etc/lilo.conf.sda to the former second disk as well (in
absence of the original boot disk).
After that the machine boots from the second disk without problems.

A short discription of what you need to do to get started on a Linux OS:
1. Visit one of the many mirror sites of RedHat at here:
http://www.redhat.com/download/mirror.html
2. Follow the instruction in the dosutils folder, eg.
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/redhat-7.1-en/os/i386/dosutils/, download and
partition your harddrive with fips.
3. Download the .iso files from a ftp site. Disc-1 is essential. Others you may
need later.
4. Burn the disc-1 onto a CD.
5. Turn off then on your computer with the newly burned CD in your CD drive.
6. Follow the instructions on the screen.
7.That's it.
A Redhat Linux for the price of burning a CD. Of course you have to read a lot
instructions, but not any more than what is needed for a cheapy Weendoze. With
Linux you have free compilers for many languages, free graphics tools. And they
are all being actively developed. Free helps are all over the net.
Good luck
