This depends on the distribution.

I'd strongly recommend mandrake 7.2, as it has built in support for the
HPT370 chipset. Otherwise, you will need to to some research. You should
read the HPT 366 howto at http://www.csie.ntu.edu.tw/~b6506063/hpt366/.
Most of the info there relates to the HPT370 as well.

Yes, you have to add the two additional HPT channels via kernel parameters.
The I/O-address(es) may vary. Read the HPT366 mini-HOWTO at:

Subject: RH7.0 kernel-source vs kernel-headers
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 10:02:22 -0500
Hi,
I'm a bit confused about the RH7.0 distribution. It appears to me that
RH7.0 ships with the 2.2.16-22 version of the kernel-source (and the
kernel too), but the kernel-headers package is from a 2.4 kernel -
specifically, it's version 2.4.0-0.26.
rpm reveals this:
kernel-2.2.16-22
kernel-headers-2.4.0-0.26 !!!!
kernel-utils-2.2.16-22
kernel-source-2.2.16-22
I have an application that requires a 2.2 kernel, but it won't compile
on an RH7.0 box.
I did a little research, and I found that RH6.2, 6.1, and 5.2 all ship
with matching kernel-source and kernel-headers RPMs.
What gives with RH7?

It sounds to me like you want to burn a Linux image file using a Windows
CD-R program called CD Writer Delux. I've never heard of this software,
so I can't offer you any step-by-step advice. I can say, however, that
you need to look for an option called "create CD from image file," "burn
ISO image to CD-R," or something similar. If you can't find such an
option, you may need to get some other software.
http://www.goldenhawk.com/ has a freeware DOS program that'll do the
trick, and the last I checked, the demo version of Nero
(http://www.ahead.de) would do it, too. Some programs (I believe
including Nero) require you to rename the image file to have an
extension other than .iso (this detail isn't standardized).
If you're asking something else, please elaborate.

I had a similar problem. Are you compiling sound card support into the
kernel? I had to compile it as a module (soundcore.o) to get the emu10k1.o
message to go away. Hope that helps.

Here's the URL of an online manual for RedHat 6.2, section F is the
kickstart documentation. I am sure there is an equivalent doc for
RedHat 7.0.
http://www.redhat.com/support/manuals/RHL-6.2-Manual/ref-guide/
I highly recommend kickstart. It is a great way of creating identical
or reproducible system configurations, especially when the hardware
varies.
I also recommend building the kickstart configuration file from
scratch -- it's not that hard.
There are some undocumented features and workarounds so post something
if you get stuck.

Anyone else here running linux on the transport zx laptop? It's
working great (RH 6.1), but I still can't get 24 bit color - fiddled

I know it's possible 'cause I tested some commercial drivers.......

Hello,
I have just recently installed Red Hat 7.0. The problem is that I
can't get a network connection. I'm using a new Linksys card that
never had any problems when using RH 6.3 but now it is not being
detected. If I try to use netconf and enable dhcp, i get a "network
device missing" error message. In my RH6.3 book it says to install
additional network interfaces I have to edit /sbin/lilo.conf and add a
line similar to this: append="ether=0,0,eth0"
(sorry, not near book to remember exact command). When I try to reload
this config script I get an invalid syntax error where this line is, so
i'm infering that something has changed since 6.3. Granted, I'm not a
Linux Wiz yet and that is why I'm asking for help.
thanks for you time.

I am always loathe to install a n.0 version of *any*thing.
I currently have RH 6.1 installed.
The version of the application I need is supported at RH 6.2, but not
yet, pronbably soon, RH 7.0.
I am having a hard time finding a "RH 6.2 Deluxe" box at the local
stores.
I'm probably just blind, but I couldn't find a version
support/retirement matrix anywhere on redhat's website.
Is there backward compatability between 6.1& 6.2 & 7.0?
How stable is RH 7.0?

Hi there! (and excuse my bad English!)
My Linux is an hybrid of SuSE 6.2 and 6.4...
I've installed the 2.4.0 kernel with devfs support and solved almost all
the problems I've encountered by now. But the really big thing is still
there: I can't start a login session as root! I always have to enter as
a normal user and then use the su-command. However, I by giving the "-b"
kernel option I can login; thus I **think** it could have something to
do with PAM, /etc/securetty and the new /dev structure.
The only things I've changed were, as said, the kernel, the /dev and the
start scripts so that they point to the right devices. Could somebody
point me to the right direction in finding a solution for this
(embarrasing) problem?
Thanks in advance,

That depends on which version of Mandrake 7.2 you have. The earlier
packaged versions had kde1.99999999something tte newer packaged
versions have kde2.0 (or so I am told). The downloaded/cheapbytes
versions had kde2.0 with them
Eitherway, you should execute ./configure --with-qt-dir=/usr/lib/qt2
and your problem should go away.
