Subject: Boot Problems
Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2001 20:59:55 GMT
Hi, just installed mandrake 7.2 and am having problems with lilo
booting linux from loadlin. my setup:
hda - sony cdrw
hdb - orb drive
hdc - dvd rom
hde - hpt 66 40 gig maxtor win98
hdf - hpt 66 20 gig maxtor mandrake
hdg - hpt 66 20 gig maxtor nt5
Can boot to linux fine using boot floppy created during startup.
When booting from loadlin get to point where Highpoint detected and
drive identified but then locks up. It doesnt say root fs mounted. In
fact this may be the point where its having problems. error is someting
like drive parameters not identifiable or something. It then gives
kernal panic. Tried linear mode and also feeding it drive parameters
which use to work in older kernals but nothing seems to work now.
Anyone try this before with this setup? Anyone know where to look.
Tried using boot manager from partition magic but it doesnt like linux
hardrive hdf.
Repeated booting from floppy, got dmesg output. Booted using loadlin
again and compared area where failure starts.
Successful floppy boot give this partition table:
Partition check:
hdb: unknown partition table
hde: [PTBL] [1027/255/63] hde1 hde2 < hde5 hde6 hde7 hde8 hde9 hde10 >
hdf: hdf1 hdf2 < hdf5 hdf6 hdf7 >
hdg: [PTBL] [1027/255/63] hdg1 < hdg5 hdg6 hdg7 hdg8 hdg9 hdg10 hdg11 >
Partition check from unsucessful loadlin boot has these partitions
instead though:
hdb
hdg
hdh
hdi
Is there some reason for this? I dont see how booting from loadlin
would change partion names as from booting off floppy. Anyway, failure
message is as follows:
Autorun...
... autorun done
Invalid session number or type of track.
Kernal panic: vfs: unable to mount root fs on 22:46
Have tried changeing root setting in loadlin parameters but didnt work.
same error occurs. Still boots from floppy like a champ though.

Lee,
I have StarOffice. I got the CD because I wanted it around just in
case. My son has loaded StarOffice on his Windows 98 machine and his
RedHat machine. This is all form on CD and I do not have to worry about
violating any copyright or licenses restrictions.
I have been sending out resumes that I have converted to .doc files and
noone has complained. I have developed some pages for myself using
StarOffice. I have been able to use Excel files and everything with no
problem.

Turns out this is a known problem with redhat 7.0 and has a bugzilla
number to track it.
However, if you stick your ks.cfg file on the initial ramdisk on the
cdrom, you can access it via:
linux ks=file:/ks.cfg

Hi Carlos,
I got an Asus A7V with a 1000Mhz Thunderbird and 2 NICs a 3Com 3C900B
and a 3C905C.
I would advice you to use those ( at least a recent 3Com card) my
experiance with those cards is very good.
During install proces they got reccognised.
Use "expert" mode when installing and you'll also have the opportunity
to choose what extra devices you have like SCSI and Networkcards.
I am running RedHat 7.0 ( upgraded the stuf like libgcc, glibc etc.. )
A7V BIOS= 1005c ( disabled "PNP OS" in the BIOS )

Are you using DHCP to obtain an IP address, I have noticed on my RH box
when I use DHCP it will display that message. I am guessing that it the
kernal lets DHCPCD (or PUMP in RH) setup and initialize the NIC card
(eth0). It is working correctly if that is what your asking.

Well, from the ETHERNET-HOWTO documentation, I was under the impression
that unless I saw the eth0 message in my dmesg file...the card was not
working correctly. You'll have to excuse my ignorance, but I don't
know what DHCP is. I specified an IP address in the netconfg dialog
box...I'm not sure where this leaves me. I'm still trying to verify
that my card is indeed recognized and is functioning correctly. If so,
what is my next step to connecting my cpu to the internet aside from
connecting a cat 5 cable to my DSL modem. Thanks.

I'd like to use the motherboard sound on a Dimension V400, which is
based on a Yamaha chipset with PCI info "Yamaha Corporation YMF-724 (rev
4)" if that helps.
Because I want to save a slot, and because I'm running 2.4 kernels,
another card or getting the commercial driver don't seem the best
solution. If anyone has made any progress on getting this setup to work,
please drop me a hint here!

Thanks. My mistake was thinking that a reboot would do the same thing.
Once again, I apologise.
To any other newbies like myself - you will find responses in other
groups that state kernels after 2.0.0 autodetect >64M RAM. If
"autodetect" means not having to edit lilo.conf, this was incorrect for
me.

I have a client who has 22 Networked POS PC's (NO CD-ROM) running OS/2
Warp (Echhh). This was initially done to use Warp's drivers to access
the POS peripherals. I have been successful at getting the peripherals
to work on Red Hat 6.2 by installing, testing and generally playing
around with one of POS PC's.
My question is
What is the easiest way to replicate/Clone this PC to the other 21. Can
I make some sort of image of this PC, boot the others off of a floppy
and have them install EXACTLY like the one I have setup.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In debian, try pppconfig as root to set up
your ppp-stuff. Worked well for me.
man pppconfig should give you the info you

Hello,
I'm a Mandrake 7.2 user trying to setup Arkeia version 4.x.x.
When selecting the files and directories to backup, aka SavePack,
I'm supposed to use the "find" command. I'm using:
/data -type d -o -name '*' ;"find" omitted per instructions
This command appears to work, but says, "No files found. Completed"
I added a ^.*$ to the include files section, but same result.
Would a fellow Arkeia user forward me a SavePack setup example?
Thanks,

thought RH 7 used grub.
The examples here are for 128M. Change 128 to your memory value.
================= If using lilo ===========================
edit /etc/lilo.conf and add
append="mem=128M"
save changes, exit the editor, then
/sbin/lilo to install the change into the mbr.
Next boot should have the change
example:
timeout=50
append="mem=128M"
image=/boot/vmlinuz
or
append="mem=128M hdd=ide-scsi" if you already have an append cmd
================ if using grub ===========================
edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and add
mem=128M
Next boot should have the change
example:
title linux
kernel (hd1,4)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb5 mem=128M
============== to replace lilo with grub ====================
cd /boot/grub
sh install.sh
============== Still having problems ===========================

The warranty and liability expired as you read this message.
If the above breaks your system, it's yours and you keep both pieces.
Practice safe computing. Backup the file before you change it.
Do a, man command_here or cat command_here, before using it.

I got the same message when I tried to install a 3c905c and an SMC card. I
installed these cards after initial setup. When I had these cards
installed during the initial setup everything worked fine. Currently I

Helps if you provide what distro and release level you are using
when you post questions to the news groups. Different distros
have different commands, files, and links to files. Even happens
between release levels of the same distribution.
If Redhat/Mandrake, have you looked in /var/log/messages ?

Try to look at making kickstart disks. This will leave you with a disk,
which will install exactly the same on the different machines, you are
going to install on. It will only ask for distinct info like hostname
etc.
Never used it myself, but heard good of it.

I can't answer why? But i may be able to answer with how?
When logging in after initial reboot if you log in as UserA then startx it

When logging in after initial reboot if you log in as root then startx it works.
If you enter su UserA and then startx it doesn't work.
