I wouldn't use xdm but rather do the following:
Use ssh for secure connections to the remote machine running the app
(get sshd and ssh clients) and for X forwarding. This may add a little extra
overhead, but the encryption offered by ssh also functions as a compressiontool.
The priciple is simple :
ssh implements the RSA authentication protocol automatically. The user
creates his/her RSA key pair by running ssh-keygen(1). This store the
private key in $HOME/.ssh/identity and the public key in
$HOME/.ssh/identity.pub in the user's home directory. The user should
then copy the identity.pub to $HOME/.ssh/authorized_keys in his/her home
directory on the remote machine (the authorized_keys file corresponds to
the conventional $HOME/.rhosts file, and has one key per line, though the
lines can be very long). After this, the user can log in without giving
the password. RSA authentication is much more secure than rhosts authen-
tication.
(1) do not secure the RSA key with a passphrase, as then you still
need to
First setup a user account, never know when one if the users tries to be
funny and do rm -rf.
Then edit the file /etc/inittab. What you'll do is make it automagically
boot into the user account. Modify the first two entries concerning the
console. They should currently look like this :
# The "id" field MUST be the same as the last
# characters of the device (after "tty").
#
# Format:
# <id>:<runlevels>:<action>:<process>
1:12345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1
2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
into :
1:2345:respawn:/bin/su - user
2:12345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
Now the machine will boot into the user account without entering any
passwords. The account itself can still be password protected, as we
don't want accounts without passwords accessible from the outside.
Then create or copy from a sample account the proper settings fi .login,
.bashrc files, bookmarks etc.
To make sure you'll boot directly into X with your programmes, add startx to
the /home/user/.login file. And edit the /home/user/.xinitrc file to
something like:
#!/bin/sh
#
#simple .xinitrc
# set a clock in the background:
xclock -digital -geometry +8 +150 &
# set background image:
xv -root -quit -max ~/.Background/company_logo.jpg &
# start the programmes that need to be running:
/usr/bin/X11/netscape http://www.boeing.com &
/usr/loacl/bin/flight_navigator &
/usr/bin/ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED] /path/to/programme &
# start the window manager, not in the background, X will stop
# when we close the window manager. wmaker, fvwm etc.
/usr/bin/X11/wmaker
make /home/user/.xinitrc execuatble and your done.
Rebooting the machine now should confirm these settings. (or make init
reread the configurationfiles by doing "/sbin/telinit q").

You can use sudo, otherwise I don't think so.
for the rest:
hostname
ifconfig
pump
Read their manpages.

A month or two ago, I wrote a query about how to get Linux on one hard
drive and Windows on another, with lilo on the linux drive being
responsible for the booting.
A couple of people suggested the following method for remapping the drives
so that Windows thinks it's booting off the primary master: altering
/etc/lilo.conf to read:
other=/dev/hdc1
label=win98
map-drive=0x81 (or 0x82)
to=0x80
map-drive=0x80
to=0x81 (or 0x82)
table=/dev/hdc
I've done this, trying both 0x81 and 0x82, in case 0x81 was the CD drive,
which I have as primary slave.
With 0x81 I get 'Loading win98', then nothing (trying to load off CD?),
and with 0x82 I get 'Loading win98' followed by 'Error loading operating
system. Setup cannot continue'
I've swapped the IDE cables round, making the Windows drive primary
master, and Windows loads fine, so the problem is not with Windows itself.
Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?
Thanks,
Duncan

either "/dev/MAKEDEV floppy" or "/sbin/MAKEDEV floppy" or
"/dev/MAKEDEV fd0" or "/sbin/MAKEDEV fd0" but all of these are just
scripts which do :
/sbin/mknod /dev/fd0 b 2 0 -m 660
chown root.floppy /dev/fd0

Might be the problem.
some BIOS'es cannot boot an OS from anything but the first IDE
controller
Connect hdc as hdb and use the map-drive command (with 0x80 and 0x81)
Alternatively:
hda : windows
hdb : linux
hdc : cdrom
Now you wouldn't need the map-drive command.
You would have to change fstab and lilo.conf though

Lilo is not the problem
Linux is not the problem
The BIOS is the problem
Just place /boot below cyl. 1024 and you'll have no problems.

You use another machine, if possible. If you have to do it from the
newly installed machine, you can minimise risk by first turning off
ALL networking services (including inetd, lpd and rpc stuff) so that
netstat shows no open ports... and you do it with javascript switched
off in your browser!

His comment was somewhat redundant - I should have thought that you've

Maybe I wasn't clear enough . . . I'm not having any problems installing
Linux, or with any of my hardware. I am only having problems inserting the
tulip.o module. I was putting RH 6.1 on the machine, which has a promise
controller. RH 6.1 comes with 2.2.14, which doesn't support the promise
controller. After the install is done, I can login as root for maintenance,
and it is at that point that I want to be able to access the network so that
I can ftp 2.2.16 and the promise controller patch to my new machine. What
I ended up doing, is putting 2.2.16 and the patch onto a CD and just copying
it over to /usr/src. Another thing I could have done is just recompile
2.2.14 with support for my tulip based card, and then ftp. What I wanted to
do, was to insert the tulip.o module without having to recompile the kernel,
since the install built 2.2.14 with tulip support as a module.
It really wasn't that big of a deal. I wasted $1.00 by using a CD, plus the
time it took to burn it. So, not much lost, I just would have rather been
able to access the network.
Any advice?

Greetings to the gurus!
Got a 20-gig Win98/Win2K dual-boot box partitioned as follows:
hda1 4Gb FAT32
hda5 5Gb FAT32
hda6 2.5Gb FAT32
hda7 2.5Gb FAT32
Free space 5 Gb
Win98 is in C, Win2K is in D. I plan to install RH7 in my free space using
Disk Druid manual partitioning. Dont want auto partitioning. Want to learn
how the druid works. :-)
Questions:
1. From the official RH reference guide, there is warning for NT users not
to install LILO in MBR as LILO overwrites NT's bootloader. Win2K is NT 5,
does this limit apply?
2. If possible, i want to boot Linux from a floppy disk to avoid conflict
with Windows bootloader. What's my best option to get this result?
3. Aside from the "basics" like swap, boot and root i come across in various
Linux readme's other extras like /usr, /home, /var, etc. Do i have to do the
same before completing setup?
TIA. Your great wisdom is all i need to start my journey to Linux land!
